SAFE!!!
I was watching at bar without sound, how did the umps come to the conclusion that both players were safe?
seems like there was at least 1 makeup call in this game too.
Baseball is slow enough, why not have a camera reply available for playoffs for any critical juncture play?

I agree with your post, but I will just correct one thing. Cano was deemed safe, Posada was called out, but the call was wrong either way.
McLellan's answer was that he thought Cano's foot was on the bag when Napoli tagged him, so he called only Jorge out... clearly u can see that Cano's foot is indeed on the bag in this picture.
this is the best way to do it...have a centralized ump in an office somewhere (like the nhl) and they will immediately contact the homeplate ump if the call is wrong. this could be unprompted by the umpire or they can possibly give the manager a challenge flag like football. you may not need it during the regular season but definitely for postseason play.
some props to girardi for the following:
1. starting cc
2. flipping jorge + matsui in the lineup
3. setting the tone early by having our guys run on the basepaths
i am leaning towards wanting to start Gardner in game 5 & give AJ some better defense in the OF & someone who can create some havoc on the basepaths (notwithstanding his caught stealing the past 2 games)... i might sit Nick Swisher & save him for a pinch hitting opportunity later in the game, he's been really struggling at the plate this postseason & both Damon & Melky's bats have finally woken up so i'd keep them both in the lineup.
I dont think he sits swisher b/c he didnt sit melky when he was having bad games in the postseason. you gotta leave the guys that got you there in b/c like melky and damon, swish's bat can light up at any moment. benching him for a game demoralizes him even more.
i just dont know if i wanna screw with the roster b/c if it aint broke, dont fix it.

We better swap Hinske back in for Guzman in the World Series b/c I'm not loving the idea that Jerry Hairston is our power bat off the bench. 2 pinchrunning specialists have been superfluous.

the other umps at the park can't help out in this situation?

its tough on the baseball diamond. the other umps arent usually in a good visual position to make that call. the firstbase ump had no view of the play. not sure where the homeplate ump was at the time, but the baseball diamond is much bigger than a basketball court where the other refs are that close to the action.
i dunno what the hell McLellan was looking at, he just had a brain fart, pure & simple... i'm sure the other umps were embarassed for him too, but being as tho he's such a respected guy in the profession maybe the other umps didn't wanna show him up, who knows... but i think they need to get the calls right, regardless of who it makes to look silly... these games are way too important to have a horrible call like that potentially determine the outcome of a game... of course, this probably means the Jeffrey Maier HR gets overturned, but in the long run i think it's the best thing for baseball to use instant replay on blatant missed calls like that one.
ok, didn't know if umps could huddle like NBA refs and discuss.
yes, they can huddle & discuss a call if someone else saw it differently... but that only usually happens on HR calls or calls down the line fair or foul... doesn't happen on safe or out calls at the bag, or at least i've never seen it happen before.
even YES is going over the edge w/this "ARod has earned his pinstripes" stuff... they have it on their promos now.

Agreed. You can't make good decisions off of small samples like 7 post-season games. Swisher is a much better offensive player than Gardner or Cabrera and shouldn't be sitting so they can play. If you were going to make playing time decisions based on stats from this series, the logical decision would be to bench Teixera and move Swisher to 1st anyway since Teix has been a worse hitter than Swisher by 200 OPS points this series. (Obviously you shouldn't do that though!)

yeah, without tex's glove, we are not up 3 games to 1 right now.

Swish looks lost at the plate right now... i just think Gardner might bring an added dimension that could benefit the team, like i mentioned, an improved OF defense & better arm in RF (moving Melky to RF) for a flyball pitcher in AJ Burnett playing against a team that takes the extra base at every opportunity could be beneficial... we've seen Joe Torre make these types of switches in the past when his starters were struggling at the plate, sitting Wade Boggs in favor of Charlie Hayes & sitting Tino in favor of Cecil Fielder in games 3, 4 & 5 of the '96 WS... that seemed to work out well for us if i recall correctly.
If we make it to the WS, we're up against the Phillies who have Cliff Lee and a healthy Pedro Martinez. That would be really exciting!
who wants to bet that if aj wins the game tonite he's gonna get like 10 pies in the face from all his teamates????
