Girardi stops to help after Series win

“ The guy wins the World Series, what does he do? He stops to help. It was totally surreal. ”

-- Westchester officer Kathleen Cristiano

Hours after guiding the New York Yankees to a World Series championship, manager Joe Girardi stopped along a suburban parkway on his way home to help a woman who crashed her car into a wall, the Westchester Journal News reported.

Early Thursday morning, Westchester County police officer Kathleen Cristiano congratulated Girardi on the World Series win as he passed through a drunken driving enforcement checkpoint, according to the Westchester Journal News. Left-handed Yankee starter Andy Pettitte had passed through the same checkpoint earlier, she said.

About 15 minutes later, Cristiano was among the first responders to a one-car accident on the Cross County Parkway in Eastchester. She was surprised to again see Girardi, this time trying to flag down assistance, according to the report.

"The guy wins the World Series, what does he do? He stops to help," said Cristiano, according to the report. "It was totally surreal."

The driver of the car in the accident, 27-year-old Marie Henry of Stratford, Conn., was able to get out of the car by the time police arrived and was shaken but unhurt, according to the report.

Girardi, dressed in a T-shirt and jeans, then told them he "had to get going," according to the report. "The driver didn't know it was him until after I told her," Cristiano said.

In stopping to help, Girardi took a risk by running across the eastbound lanes of the parkway near a notorious blind curve, county Sgt. Thomas McGurn said, according to the report.

"He could have gotten killed," McGurn said, according to the report. "Traffic goes by at 80 mph."

Haven't posted in here yet about the Yanks, but I feel obligated.

What can you say. Andy had nothing last night but he got through 6 on guile and just the pure heart that has made him an all-time Yankee great. Andy is the man.

Matsui, geez man, did this guy make it known he wants to be back next year with a new contract or what? You can't let him go off of this, you just can't. Matsui's been my favorite Yank since he came over and I'm just really happy for him, what a pro's pro.

ARod is now vindicated. He didn't just tag along for this either, he was a pivotal part in this whole run and he could have gotten the MVP just as well as Matsui. I'm happy for Alex and I hope he continues to live a happier life.

Jeter/Posada/Rivera. These guys deserve this. They've been the same players since the last championship but the players around them haven't been. They are as good of leaders as you will EVER see in sports and I'm just happy these guys got a little vindication ring also.

All in all, what a Yankee team, I've just thoroughly enjoyed watching these guys this whole year and I already can't wait for next April.

#27 bitches!!!

Thats a cool story. I'm really happy for Girardi- the guy is a good manager. Weird ALCS managing aside, he was great in the world series and I thought he did a good job all year. Even last year- we had a solid winning record despite several devastating injuries. Imagine winning the WS this year without Posada, Matsui etc.

8 division titles + 4 AL Pennants + 2 world championships = team of the decade

I give it to Boston so far, but if the Yankees win next season (Yes, 2010 is part of this decade contrary to popular and ignorant belief) then I would say the Yankees pocketed "Team of the decade" once again.

personally i don't count 1990 as part of the 80s any more than i consider 2000 part of the 90s decade... if that makes me ignorant then so be it.

Congrats to the Yanks. What are the chances you guys try to add Halladay to the mix next year?
kam77 @ 11/5/2009 7:09 PM
Matsui 35yrs old
Damon 36yrs old
Pettitte 37yrs old

All of them are now free agents. All of them contributed mightily in the postseason.

Where does each one go from here??? Abreu resigned with the Angels today ... 2yrs 19mil.
