nah, this guy is a mediocre prospect... he won't stand in Damon's way of coming back IMO... Damon is still miles better than anyone we have in our farm system or 40 man roster... a few more very good seasons & he could be close to reaching HOF consideration, he's not that far away from 3000 hits & YS is handbuilt for his swing... i don't see many other better options for Damon than to come back to NY where he is loved by the fans, by his teammates, by his coaching staff & the feeling is reciprocal on his end as well... it's just a question of pride for him at this point, will he come back or retire, cuz doesn't look like any teams are willing to pay him anything near what he thought he could get in this free agency market.
Cubs sign Nady to 1 year deal pending physical
words is that the A's are still courting Damon for around $4-5MM per year.
i have no problems going into the season w/o damon. if we need an OF during the season, we will go out and get one. damon is a good player and is clutch but i'm not sweatin' it. this is ca$h money we're talking about...the dude is gangsta...

Yeah $3.3 million bucks for Nady pending the physical. For that amount of money, I would've been interested in keeping Nady around. If he's healthy, the Cubs got themselves a pretty good player. If he's all the way back he's a pretty good outfielder that could hit 30 HRs in that ballpark...Reading this morning that Ben Sheets just signed with the As for 1 yr., $10 million with another $2 million in "performance incentives." Man that's a lot more than I thought he'd get - I remember reading that he didn't even look that good in the recent audition he held in front of several teams' scouts. I remember reading a scout saying he really looked tired in the 3rd of 3 simulated 3-innings & looked mediocre overall. Hey, gotta give he and his agent some credit -- he got himself a good deal, considering he missed the whole season last year (he got a deal similar to what Andy Pettitte got and Andy pitched his ass off pretty much for 2 straight years, esp. last season). When he's right, this guy's a damn good pitcher. An ace. Good luck to him...Also reading that Jon Garland signed with San Diego -- 1 yr., $5.3 million.
I still say we should go get Mike MacDougal for the bullpen. Not only would he give us a reliable late-inning power arm that gets groundballs & keeps the ball in the park (great in terms of thinking about what type of pitchers we could use in this new Yankee Stadium) but he has a lot of experience closing games and would be excellent insurance in case something ever happened to Mo. Plus he'd give us some flexibility to start either Hughes or Joba and give either guy a longer leash as a starter if that's the route they intend on taking (if it were up to me, Hughes would start and I'd leave Joba in the pen - you know they won't do that though. Even more of a reason why I find MacDougal intriguing). I think MacDougal makes a ton of sense for us - we're a veteran team that's built to win now and win it all. This veteran reliever could only help the cause and give us some flexibility. You figure they had to have at least discussed him internally by now...Maybe he just wants too much money and/or wants to remain a closer (he did save 20 out of 21 for the Nats last year). If his asking price isn't too high, I think he's a no-brainer for us...
apparently the Yanks just signed Randy Winn... I am most unimpressed

1 year around $2 mil according to 1 report i read... if Winn can return to his '07 & '08 form, then it's a steal... if he's the Randy Winn of '09, then it's a waste of $2 million.
randy winn to the yanks? i thought this was going to happen about 7 years ago when the rays dealt him to seattle. he's always been a pesky player who can hit for plenty of doubles. he is 35, so hopefully he has one more real solid year left in him.. he should get about 2-3 games a week here.
Winn was always average and now he's done. The price isn't so prohibitive and he is a crafty vet, but if Nady cost 3.3 mil for 1 yr why weren't we in for him and not Winn? I hope we didn't decide we wouldn't go 1 mil over budget or something.
Anyway, it seems like Johnny Damon won't be back. Gonna be tough to lose Damon and Matsui after the big plays they made in the world series. Team will look a little more different this year than I thought it would.
personally i'm not really happy with any of the offseason's moves except for the Granderson trade.
this whole Johnny Damon situation stinks if u ask me... i fuckin' can't stand Scott Boras, that fugger! if he weren't Damon's agent i know he'd be wearing a Yankee uniform right now... i can't believe we replaced Johnny Damon with Randy freakin' Winn! are you kidding me?! losing Matsui was bad enough, but at least Nick Johnson can produce... Winn is not a starting calibre corner OFer anymore... he'd have been a great signing as a backup option to compete with Gardner for the 4th OFer role, not as Damon's replacement.
its all good tms. if the yanks need to get an outfielder during the season if winn flounders, they will do that. damon was a big piece to our championship, but we will be fine without him too.

take a deep breath and just remind yourself carl crawford in 2011...

exactly.. this is a one year thing because there is no doubt in my mind crawford is a yankee next year.
I really think the yanks played it conservative this offseason to keep some cash in reserve. At mid year, they'll evaluate their team and could make a big move before the trade deadline if they feel that they are lacking in any department.

listening to Damon's interview today on Fat Mike show, Damon wanted 2 years minimum at $11 mil per & wasn't willing to accept the Yankees' offer of 2 years at $14 mil, but that was right after the WS was over... dunno if we could have negotiated a 1 year deal w/team option clauses for a 2nd but i think it would have been worth the while of both sides to at least pursue such an option... apparently listening to the comments of both sides, such a deal was never discussed... trust me, i know all about Carl Crawford in 2011, & that's the way i'd wanna go too... just wish Damon could have been signed to a 1 year deal somehow, he fit in so perfectly both with his game & his personality.
anyway, water under the bridge now... & looking at the big picture we don't lose much production with Granderson in LF over Damon offensively, we definitely gain defensively... NJ over Matsui is OK IF (& that's a big IF) NJ stays healthy next year... Gardner & Winn platoon in CF isn't as good as Melky out there IMO unless like i said earlier Winn returns to his '08 form... still not happy w/the Javy V trade tho... did i mention that?

JD: "Sooo... great year we just had, huh Brian? Hope we can do this again in 2010! I really hope I'm back next year!"
Cash: "Yeah, yeah... sure Johnny... me too." *cough*
my name is brian ca$hman...and i am gangsta...
Just hours after the New York Yankees agreed to terms with outfielder Randy Winn, officially ending Johnny Damon's chances of a return to the Bronx, agent Scott Boras is trying like hell to save some face. "The Yankees never even made an offer to me regarding Johnny Damon during the entire process," says Boras.
And in response, Ca$hMoney said this:
"On Dec 17," Cashman said moments ago, "we were told not to make an offer for a penny less than $13 million a year for two years."
"Boras told me I wouldn't find a No. 2 hitter for less than $13 million," Cashman continued. "I found one (Nick Johnson) for half that."
can you identify the biggest douchebag?
2010 notable additions:
Curtis Granderson
Javier Vazquez
Nick Johnson
Randy Winn
Jamie Hoffmann
2010 notable losses:
Johnny Damon
Hideki Matsui
Chien Ming Wang
Melky Cabrera
Phil Coke
Jose Molina
Brian Bruney
Jerry Hairston Jr.
Eric Hinske
Xavier Nady
Austin Jackson
EDIT: Shelley Duncan
(let me know if i've missed anyone)
considering that Ramiro Pena is stepping into Hairston's role off the bench & Francisco Cervelli's taking over for Molina as our backup C, do u guys think the current Yankees are better than last year's championship squad?
personally i think we lost some depth on the bench & not convinced that Gardner/Winn is as good as Melky/Gardner & not sure NJ will be an upgrade over Matsui or Granderson will be an upgrade over Damon overall... i think we added some depth in the starting rotation but Javy would not have been my choice to fill that role & would have rather kept Melky & just signed a FA to be our 4th starter.
(btw, this is not a knock on Brian Cashman, i still think he's easily the best GM in baseball... it's not an easy job that he does, sometimes u gotta make some tough choices... just analyzing the current roster & comparing to last year's)
