Just kidding, but it feels like it as I watch them recently. Joba looked pretty good last night, so maybe Girardi has lit a fire under his arse. Overall, I don't like any of the moves we made but am happy we didn't kill ourselves financially or by giving up elite prospects. We really need our core to perform (Arod, Tex, Jeter, Robbie, Posada and Swish) and it doesn't seem like we've had everyone hitting on all cylinders at the same time yet this year. Having said that, we need to turn it on SOON!

Would you have liked the Montero for Lee deal? I was for that move but a lot of people seemed against giving up Jesus. "i don't like any of the moves we made but am happy we didn't kill ourselves financially or by giving up elite prospects." -- you have to give to get though. what move could be done where prospects wouldn't be given up?
when is nick johnson back LOL. what a bust that guy was. given that the yanks took on $3 mil for berkman, the obvious and easy monday morning QBing is "why didnt the yanks just offer 2 yr $16 mil" and get damon back? then they'd still have austin jackson, who could've been a sweetener in the cliff lee deal.
oh well. rays didn't do anything. yanks have already spent $200 mil, lets see how it plays out. pettitte will come back for the playoffs. still waiver moves to be made (didn't yanks get hairston off waivers?)

To the 5th power, huh? Wow. LOL.. This guy was an all-star closer in 2008 for the Cubs..That's 2008 not 1998. Just 2 seasons ago...Finished that season 5-4 with a respectable 3.26 ERA, 34 saves, 66.1 IP, 54 hits, only 3 HRs allowed (in Wrigley Field btw), 84 Ks, .219 BA against.
Even last year wasn't terrible. Yeah the ERA was a little high at 4.25 (as a reliever all it takes is a couple of bad outings to inflate an ERA) but when you look a little deeper, the other numbers weren't terrible at all: 55 IP, 20 saves, 63 Ks with a .233 BA against.
And in 2007, his first season making the transition to the bullpen: only threw 24.1 innings because of injury but had 24 Ks, a 3.33 ERA, 0 HRs allowed (again in Wrigley Field), .207 BA against.
This year the numbers haven't been great I'll grant you but what did you see the other day against the Rays that makes you think he (a) can't help us, (b) isn't an upgrade over Chan Ho Park, the man he was brought here to replace per Cashman himself (Park looked finished btw and was released) and (c) couldn't be an option for the 8th inning if he shows something AND Joba never finds his mojo??? The answers are a resounding he can, he is and he very well could be if you ask me...The other day against Tampa was his first day back off the DL from a blister problem -- dude racked up 3 Ks, hit 95 MPH multiple times, threw a nasty hook to freeze Evan Longoria for strike 3 in a big spot and also featured a real nasty cutter/slider at 90-91 MPH to combat lefties that I didn't even know he had..Before the blister, this guy was hitting 97 MPH for the Indians. Go look at the tape..Let's give the man a chance..Obviously, he still has a power arm with plus pitches and plenty of gas left in the tank..It's all about staying healthy now and getting him some regular work in some big situations to earn Joe's trust..We got him for a can of paint -- $500,000 bucks. That's it. With Cleveland picking up some of the remaining tab on his 2010 salary. And speaking of salary, there's no financial obligation past this season (he's an expiring contract) so if he doesn't work out, bye-bye..Let's relax and come in off the ledge with this, OK? Dude was brought here to replace Chan Ho Park who sucked balls..Why are some of you so against the move?? I seriously don't get it.
As of right now, if I had to rate the importance/impact potential of all three acquisitions from now through the end of the year, I'm going Wood 1, Berkman 2 and Kearns 3. Wood with his power arsenal will serve as an immediate upgrade in the pen where we have some question marks right now and are in need of someone to step up in a big way (there's a big-time opportunity there all of a sudden if Joba continues to pitch poorly) and between Berkman & Kearns, I feel Berkman will be given more of an opportunity to have an impact because he'll be a regular in the lineup day to day...Kearns, as good a pickup as he was, is a bench player (you don't necessarily need a stacked bench in the AL like you do in the NL btw -- in the AL, your guys 1-9 are your regulars and the pitcher doesn't hit)..He'll play occasionally against lefties or to give one of our regular 3 outfielders a day off in order to keep everyone fresh.
Speaking of lifeless, Jesus, it's getting worse huh? Certainly ain't getting any better..Flat as a f'in pancake AGAIN. WTF? I just hope playing during the day today snaps them outta their funk..I knew Toronto was gonna be a problem. They're about the last team I wanted to see right now..Everytime we play them, they're always way back in the standings it seems, yet I always come away impressed with their team..Their lineup together with some of their pitching is very underrated. Or should I should say underperforming, that's probably a better way to describe them---if I were a Toronto fan following this team closely the last few seasons, I'd be pissed man. They should be playing better ball with that collection of talent. They have as much talent as any team out there..I wonder why it hasn't clicked.
I'm still mad about Joe taking that rubber game off to end the Tampa series. I think that was the catalyst to this mini-slide. Think about it -- we played good ball @ Cleveland and a good first 2 games against the Rays..Then Joe has to go and manage that 3rd Tampa game like it was a Sunday-morning softball game where you have to make sure your whole line up is stuffed with chicks -- boy-girl-boy-girl..Don't wanna beat a dead horse but you don't manage a game against the #2 team in the division like that in a pennant race..You manage that game TO WIN and keep your forward momentum. PERIOD..I mean would La Russa sit Pujols in the next big game against Cincy with the division up for grabs?? Of course he wouldn't...
We need to start playing better..Maybe it's time for Jete to call one of his closed-door meetings..Tampa's playing well & even Boston's playing a lot better. We need to stop this slide right here. We need Phil to throw a good game today.
-------------------------------------
Meanwhile down on the farm for anyone who cares:
Ivan Nova: 10-2, 2.80 ERA in 20 starts this season for AAA SWB. He's been up with us before--pitched out of the pen for a stretch and looked good..Makes you wonder why this wasn't the guy they decided to go with to fill in for Pettitte. I'm done with guys like Mosley and Mitre fellas. Please, no more!! I mean if anything, let Gaudin make those starts until Andy's ready for Christ's sake. Andy may be close btw (all I've been reading about if how he's saying he feels fine and feels like he's ready to go--I think the Yanks are just playing this safe, giving him some extra time just to be sure)..AAA stats sometimes don't translate well to the major-league level as we've seen recently with guys like Abaladejo but I'd still be willing to give this guy a shot over Mosley & Mitre if Pettitte's still not ready.
Zach McAllister: 7-8, 4.76 ERA in 21 starts for SWB. 142 hits in 115.1 IP. Wow. Not too good. Way too many hits.
Romulo Sanchez: Only 8-8 with a 4.31 ERA. Doesn't look like they know what to do with him (14 starts along with 10 relief appearances). We all saw this guy, he was up with Nova for a stretch pitching out of the bullpen. Big fella's got good stuff -- fastball in the 95+ range..I might even give him a start to fill in for Pettitte. Gotta love those power pitchers. I take a guy with his stuff over Mitre or Mosley any day of the week. Similar to Humberto Sanchez in size, age and ability (Sanchez isn't even in MLB anymore btw - looks like he last pitched in a Mexican Winter League). Interesting prospect. Starting pitchers that hit 97 MPH don't exactly grow on trees.
Eduardo Nunez: Only hitting .175 his last 10 games but overall he's at .293 (in 423 ABs), 24 2Bs, 163 total bases, 21/25 SBs. Last year he was just as impressive hitting .322 for Trenton. Just turned 23 this summer. Probably our top SS prospect.
Kevin Whelan: Looks like he's taken a major step backward this year for whatever reason. Started out the year in AAA and got bombed (1-1, 9.49 ERA, 12.1 IP, 14 hits, 13 runs). Has since been demoted to AA where he hasn't faired much better -- 2-3, 5.88 ERA, 17 ER in 26 innings). Has power stuff -- this guy was being talked about as the next closer to succeed Mariano Rivera when we first acquired him..Hasn't done a damn thing with that ability this year. Humberto Sanchez, Kevin Whelan & Anthony Claggett --- we didn't get much of a return on that Sheffield trade. Sanchez and Claggett aren't even with the organization anymore and Whelan is struggling.
Brandon Laird: 23-year-old (next month) 3rd baseman who was tearing up AA Trenton this year (.291 BA, 22 2Bs, 23 HRs, 90 RBI in 409 ABs) before just getting promoted to SWB -- all he's done there now is go 6 for his first 8 with 2 2Bs & 2 HRs in his first 2 games (actually went 4-4 with the 2 HRs in his 1st game). Definitely one of our top prospects right here. This guy might wind up becoming our best overall position prospect over Montero.
Lance Pendleton: 26-year-old RH starting pitcher's quietly having a very good year for Trenton -- 10-4, 3.38 ERA in 21 starts, 114.1 IP, only 89 hits, with 106 Ks. No idea what type of pitcher he is; I've never seen him. Those are very good numbers though. Maybe he gets the call up to Scranton soon.
Wilkins Arias: Continues to do the job year after year as a situational lefty out of the Thunder bullpen. This dude's almost 30-years-old -- I'm surprised he hasn't gotten a call up to at least AAA by now. He's got nothing left to prove at the AA level..This year he's thrown 48.2 innings, 2.40 ERA, 40 hits, 54 Ks. Similar statline in 2009: 5-4, 61.2 innings, 53 hits, 66 Ks. And in '08 split between Tampa & Trenton: 4-0, 3.34, 62 innings, 80 Ks. If Marte never comes back and Joe decides he still wants to go with 2 lefties, this guy could be an option..Maybe he bypasses AAA altogether and we call him up to the bigs in Sept. for a look. Wilkins De La Rosa, another lefty pitcher on Trenton, is 5 years younger than Arias but hasn't pitched nearly as well. Like Romulo Sanchez, it looks like the Yanks aren't sure what to do with De La Rosa, whether to make him a starter or a reliever (26 total appearances, 8 starts -- 2-3, 5.61 ERA, 59.1 IP, 70 hits allowed, 43 Ks). We still have some time to continue developing De La Rosa -- Arias, on the other hand, is a guy that looks like he could help us right now. We should at least give him a shot at AAA and see how he responds.
Dellin Betances: Finally pitching up to his potential -- 6-1 at Tampa this year (11 appearances, all as a starter), 1.26 ERA, 57 IP, only 31 hits allowed, only 15 walks, 1 HR allowed, 68 Ks. They might decide to fast-track him now off this kind of success. I wouldn't be surprised to see him in AA before the year is out. Definitely by next year..
Slade Heathcott: 2009 first-round draft selection. Outfielder. In 46 games for Class A Charleston -- .270, 185 ABs, only 1 HR, 10/15 SBs...Looks pretty pedestrian so far..
Cito Culver: This year's first-round pick. SS. Like Heathcott Culver hasn't shown much yet either. For the Gulf Coast League Yankees: .276, 5 2Bs, 6/8 SBs in 33 games. Not bad I guess for his first season in rookie ball..
3rd game in a row with a 2-run dinger early on..4 out of the last 6 I believe...Protect this one now...WIN THIS GAME NOW DAMNIT!!! Phil looks good so far.
TMS wrote:rumor has it we were close to getting Mike Lowell from the Red Sox before the deadline in a 3 way... last time we made a trade w/the Sux was for Mike Stanley.
No kidding? Wow..Would you have preferred this guy as a primary DH bat over Berkman?? Not sure about that...I think we got the right guy.

Number 13 hits his 600th 13 days after hitting 599...I knew it was gonna happen today! Let's mandhandle the sawx this weekend and put together a nice little stretch right now. I don't think the BloSox are going to trade Lowell to us given the fact that the biggest asshole on their team Youkilis is probably out for the season..

Didn't know about Youk's thumb injury until you just mentioned it jus..When did that happen? Yesterday I guess right? Bummer for them huh? Ashame they were starting to play better and they get Ellsbury back today...Injuries or no injuries, you better believe I still want blood this weekend boy!!

he's hardly played this year, & it would depend on what we would have had to give up... if it was the same package we gave up for Berkman, then no, but if it were for one of those player to be named type deals where we'd just have to assume his contract for this season, then i would probably prefer Lowell, only because i think he brings leadership, defense & a great clubhouse presence... he is a hard nosed player that everyone respects, & can still get the clutch hit when he needs to... the only question is will he be durable enough to play out the string, but anyone would be an upgrade over Nick the walking injury... anyway, i think Kearns brings us good insurance in case one of our guys goes down, which is why i was very happy about his acquisition.
TMS wrote:Lance Berkman's already paying dividends... just took out the best player on the team in batting practice.
LOL! I know right..
To be fair about yesterday, if A-Rod's gonna play 3B during batting practice then he's gotta pay attention. Otherwise, get your ass off the field and just wait to take your cuts..Just sayin'..Tough to get on Lance right there..
TMS wrote:IMO Cano & Teixeira should be switched in the lineup... Cano is our best hitter by far this year, he should be hitting in the 3 hole... Teix is still an RBI machine even tho his slugging percentage & batting average has taken a big dip this year... he'd be the ideal guy to bat 5th behind ARod... i'd also bat Gardner leadoff & put Jeter back into the 2 hole for the rest of the season... Gardner's OBP & base stealing ability is ideal to set the table for the big bats behind him... i like Swisher in an RBI slot like hitting 6th behind Teix over batting him 2nd also.
Logical observations although I wouldn't change a thing right now. They're all hot --- Swish is thriving in the 2 hole and has been for awhile now (he even came out and said he wasn't gonna see the same pitches hitting 7th that he would hitting 2nd--I'm glad Joe abandoned the idea of Berkman in the 2 spot), and Robbie's killin' it hitting 5th (not to mention he's been awesome protection for A-Rod all year) and Tex has really heated up himself...Why tinker with any of these guys right now? Having said that, I do like the idea of hitting Gardy leadoff with Jete 2nd..That would bump Swish outta the 2 hole obviously...Gardy has cooled off recently though..Maybe batting him leadoff might kick start him again. I could see that..I'd just hate to disrupt Swisher. Dude's locked in right now. Not sure I'd mess with him.

i was trying to hold off on the criticism of his pisspoor start as a Yankee at the plate & on the field, the guy has been completely useless, but i figured i'd give him a few more games to do something... then this happens... i agree ARod should have been paying attention, hopefully his ankle isn't broken & it's just a bruise... but hey, maybe Berkman can step into the cleanup role & be effective.
Finestrg wrote:Logical observations although I wouldn't change a thing right now. They're all hot
we've lost 4 of the last 6 games against key rivals... i'm not panicking but i think this team needs a jolt... the trades obviously haven't helped.
TMS wrote:very cool video showing how Mariano dominates hitters, & illustrates just how amazing his control really is:
You Jinx! About 1.5 hours later Mariano gives up a single to Murphy. These guys are going to be tough, especially if Kinsler comes back 100%. AJ made one mistake last night. I want him to build on this performance, but he has yet to pitch a game in which he doesn't make at least one costly mistake. Aargghhh...
