Advanced stats? Who needs to look at advanced stats? The BA of the heart of our order is pathetic.

Well if you just look at the W-L record, the team is doing all right. The advanced stats paint the picture of a team playing at closer to a .450 level though.

Only thing better is beating on the Red Sox!

Just when it looked like things were turning around, this offense puts together 1 run in an 18 inning stretch!

Losing 2 out of 3 to the Orioles was tough, esp. when one of those games was started by Tanaka. Gotta pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and go get at least 2 in Toronto now. Then home for the Sox and Rays back to back. We've made up some ground and need to keep going. We're right there. All we can ask for considering the injuries, some poor pitching, an inconsistent offense, etc.. I like where we are, all considered. Can't wait to see what they do to enhance this team and when they plan on doing it..

Bonn1997 @ 6/25/2014 9:08 AM
It's amazing that the Yankees, Red Sox, and Devil Rays are at the bottom of the division now!
jrodmc @ 7/2/2014 9:07 AM
Don't worry, McCann says to just wait until they all start hitting!
Bonn1997 @ 7/5/2014 3:33 PM
Cervelli is a better hitter than McCann!
Finestrg @ 7/8/2014 11:09 AM
Interested to see if our combination of Shane Greene & newly acquired Brandon McCarthy outperforms the As' Samardzija/Hammel duo the rest of the way.

Shane Greene looked real good yesterday and McCarthy's got good stuff, better than Nuno. Groundball pitcher which should translate well in Yankee Stadium...Not bad..

Weird to see how they just gave up on Soriano like that. First off -- you don't try and trade the guy at least??? We traded a pretty good arm in Corey Black to get this dude...I mean, I know he was struggling, but was Joe really giving him a chance to work out of it? Not really -- this guy was getting pinch hit for late in games...Happened about a week ago in a huge spot -- the light-hitting Ichiro came up and pinch hit for him down 1, bottom 10 or 11 at home (game where Jose Ramirez gave up a run in extra innings and we lost to the As). Couldn't believe that. You don't want a power hitter up there to try and tie it? I thought this guy had a stretch from last year where he had the most HRs in the majors over a period of time?? Now he's a guy you just waive?? Strange move, esp. with the offense as inconsistent as it is, not to mention devoid of power.

jrodmc @ 7/9/2014 11:41 PM
Tanaka on the DL just in time for the All Star break.

How does Brian Cashman still have a job?

Don't care for either move we just made at the deadline. Prado's not great and definitely wasn't worth surrendering Pete O'Brien imo. O'Brien has MONSTER power -- 33 HRs combined in the minors this year. Dude had some nice versatility to him as well -- catcher by trade but with Gary Sanchez, maybe Austin Romine etc. in front of him, he was supposedly progressing nicely at 3rd, 1st and the OF. Always room for him as a DH with the Yankees too. This guy's bat is what really matters. 3rd most HRs in the entire minor league baseball system up to this point this year...When's the last time we developed a big-time power hitter of our own? I feel like we've always had to go out and get our big bats elsewhere -- Tex, A-Rod, Cecil Fielder back in the day, etc. Now we actually had a nice power prospect making big noise in our system and we trade him for 30 year old Martin Prado?!? Don't understand why we couldn't have just called O'Brien up weeks ago. Would've filled in for Tex during the back injury and could've been a nice cheap internal option to hit behind Tex now that he's back (Tex has no protection in this lineup at all). I mean we might've just given up on a future 40 HR guy here for not much in return.

And the move for Drew -- I don't get that either. Dude was having a horrible year. From what I'm reading, the plan is to play Drew at 2nd and Prado in RF. Great, let's play both new guys out of position why don't we!! Welcome to the Bronx zoo!!! Is Drew that much of an upgrade over Brian Roberts? We only gave up Kelly Johnson so no biggie there I guess (not like surrendering a young jewel like O'Brien). Will the plan be to resign Drew after the yr and pencil him in as Jeter's replacement? No idea...

Right now, the Prado move feels like a D- and the Drew move a C-. Hopefully both guys prove me wrong and they contribute something worthwhile down the stretch here.

A Pete O'Brien call-up for much needed pop and getting Michael Pineda back sometime soon might've been all this team really needed.

Bonn1997 @ 8/1/2014 7:44 AM
Those are very generous grades.
I think the team needed a complete overhaul. If we were going to be buyers, though, we should have at least bought something worthwhile.

Agreed. Only thing I can think of is Cash looked into some bigger moves I'm sure. Price was prob. way too high though -- teams prob. wanted Betances, D-Rob, O'Brien, Luis Servino, Gary Sanchez, etc...Then once teams wouldn't drop their asking price, he then went to his plan B, plan C ideas. To me though, Pete O'Brien was a lot to give up for a plan C, no?

Don't know what they think they got in Prado but to be fair, I might rate that trade a little higher than a D-, we'll see. Wasn't overly familiar with him but just looking over his stats and some video -- he's not a power hitter--I hope they don't think they got some legit power hitter--but he's got a live-looking bat. Should be able to compile some extra base hits, shoot balls in the gaps for doubles, etc.. Looks like he's got some nice gap power.. Close to a .300 hitter for his career. He's right-handed though, so in Yankee Stadium especially, probability is low he starts hitting HRs for us, and to me that's what we really needed: a legit power hitter. Looks like Prado's fairly versatile too--I think he's really a 3rd baseman but I believe I read the plan is to start using him in RF. I guess he's got some experience in the OF -- I hope he can handle that role and thrive here. If all goes well, this guy could have an impact...Having said that, I would much rather have seen Peter O'Brien called up weeks ago to see if he could've provided some real pop for the lineup. Sometimes the answers are right in front of you. Grass ain't always greener, you know the deal Bonn...What were they afraid of? Calling up O'Brien, rushing him up from Trenton, and he failed? So what if he did? Big deal -- nobody would've expected a thing outta the kid. Turns out we were only able to get Martin Prado for him so his value, despite the 33 HRs in the minors this yr up to this point, was still relatively low. But what if we brought him up and he became an overnight sensation? It's happened before...Say we brought the kid up, he started hitting bombs, galvanized the team & city, the crowd fell in love with him, we finally found some legit power (and on the cheap too, always a good thing), etc...He either could've helped us AND/OR he could've increased his value to the point where we could've gotten something better than Prado for him. Prado doesn't look like a bad addition himself; giving up on O'Brien so early is what really makes the move feel like a D- to me. I would've liked to have seen what this kid could've done at the major league level FOR US. My guess is he would've held his own and hit for some power. All of Cash's other moves were some nice minor tweaks I supported (I can even live with what they gave up for Headley---Solarte had really fizzled out and it looked like things were starting to catch up to Rafael De Paula, who wasn't nearly as dominant this year as he was when he first debuted for the Yanks), but this move for Prado I feel like he may have given up too much..

Bonn1997 @ 8/2/2014 10:42 AM
I don't think the bigger moves would have helped enough. I'm looking at the run differentials, not just the records. This looks like a pretty bad team - one that's actually worse than its record. I think they need a completely new philosophy. I bet they could have gotten decent prospects for Kuroda and a few prospects for others on the roster. I think we're headed for the worst possible outcome - going all in as buyers and still missing the playoffs. We don't know the outcome in advance obviously but Cashman's philosophy this year strikes me as the famous definition of insanity (doing the same thing over and over and expecting a new result).
Bonn1997 @ 8/3/2014 7:51 AM
At least Beltran is hitting better. I think he's still a very good hitter and he was just playing injured for a while. Ellsbury is OK. The biggest, most confusing disappointment from last off-season is McCann.
Bonn1997 @ 8/4/2014 7:51 AM
Hmmm. I didn't realize how much better the Yankees' offense was post-all-star break: .742 OPS and a +9 run differential. That .742 OPS over the course of the whole season would have ranked the team 5th out of 30. Beltran and Gardner have put up great #s. Maybe we can sneak into the playoffs. I've got a little more optimism.
jrodmc @ 8/4/2014 10:40 AM
I was just going to hit you with Gardner's career year stats during his first year of his brandy new contract!

Pineda's possibly coming back!
Tanaka's already playing a game of catch with someone!

Each little signing Cashman makes is paying off! At least right away!

The baseball powers just cannot have Jeter's career end at Fenway! We have to make the playoffs!

Bonn1997 @ 8/4/2014 10:45 AM
Gardner has been unbelievable! Making the playoffs would be nice and it gives me a reason to watch the team. It's too low of a bar for defining this season as a success though.

A success? The rotation's been completely decimated, and except for Gardner, we can't hit our way out of a wet paper bag more than 2 or 3 games in a row. Yes, I was all gooey and crazed at the start of this season too, but honestly, what do you expect with 100 roster changes and 50 different starting lineups?

How about El Capitain being healthy this long? Don't we get points for that?

Making it out alive to the end of the season would be lovely at this point.

Bonn1997 @ 8/4/2014 10:58 AM
If Cashman didn't realize this old lineup would be injury prone, that's part of the problem, not an excuse for it.
