Yankes will ask Mo to get 5 outs.

Jason Bay is the guy we shoulda went after... he's a better hitter historically than Nady & is signed to a contract for next season at relatively reasonable dollars... u coulda easily let Abreu walk w/confidence if u had him on the roster.

Eh, I'm not that high on Bay. To me, he's the typical player that'll come to NY and suck it hardcore.

what is he if not a journeyman bro? in 7 years at the ML level he's played on 3 different teams & aside from this year he's only come close to hitting .300 once... he's got a career .281 BA & .793 OPS... those are not eye popping stats... if this year is the norm for him than we got a steal... if he comes back to earth & he goes back to hitting in the .270's every year & this trade doesn't net us a WS appearance, then it's a total waste IMHO.

I'm with TMS on this one. You can't just ignore Nady's career stats. I'm not against the trade but I wouldn't call it a steal. I think we can agree now that this never really was a transition year after all.

You can call it whatever you want but when you're only 3 games out of first and the Wild Card on July 25th, you make this trade.

I never thought it was a transition year even though others kept telling me it was. If it was a transition year, though, you view the playoffs as gravy but unnecessary; improving your youth is what would really matter. With the opportunity to outspend everyone and very favorable salary rules, the Yankees should never need transition years. They should always be able to win now and rebuild at the same time.

lol Krazy Kyle.. I'm with you Des.. I don't trust him at atll, even with the good season he's had.
HA! I just posted the same thing on another forum. Before the inning started, I posted there that I wanted Joba to pitch the 8th. You don't have to baby him in what might be the most important game of the season.

Mariano pitches out of the jam!

The real issue is that it has to be a 2 inning save, though.

MaTT4281 @ 7/25/2008 10:13 PM
Yanks win! Talk about a nail biter. Please never let Farnsworth pitch in a 1 run game.
VDesai @ 7/25/2008 10:13 PM
Mariano as dominant as ever.
Bonn1997 @ 7/25/2008 10:15 PM
What roles do Marte, Ramirez, Farnsworth, and Veras have now? Who pitches which innings? It's almost too many good relievers. I think of those four, Farnsworth is the last I'd want to be the set-up man, though.
Bonn1997 @ 7/25/2008 10:16 PM
Is Mariano gonna be available tomorrow? I think he threw almost 30 pitches today.
djsunyc @ 7/25/2008 10:24 PM
benchmark game for joba.

mariano is the greatest yankee pitcher since whitey ford.

doesn't matter. that's the good thing. now, if a starter can only go 5 innings, we don't have to sweat it out.
Bonn1997 @ 7/25/2008 10:28 PM
Is it just this year or career-wise have lefties hit Marte much better than righties have? I can't find the stat for his career.

I had the same thought! Please don't tell me that Joe G is dumb enough to have our fifth best relief pitcher be the set-up man.

TMS @ 7/25/2008 11:26 PM
Farns has been lights out this whole month so i'll cut him a little slack for this one... he still makes me nervous but at Fenway in that situation i don't think there's a pitcher on this entire team that wouldn't make me nervous in a 1-0 game, even Mariano.

we got the W, that's the important thing... 2.5 games out of 1st place bitches!

I cant believe I'm saying this but DJ, if you look at Whitey, his stats looked at today are beyond mindboggling, but if you put them in the context of the era he pitched in, they aren't as good as they would be today. I honestly can't believe I just said that about Whitey Ford, but I did.

That brings me to Joba. Joba looks sensational as a starter, he pitched tonight, as you said, "a benchmark game", and this is only the beginning with him, which excites me greatly. I do have a problem with Joba-mania though. Tonight, Michael Kay (the worst announcer in baseball) must have said about 5 times, "should a young pitcher like Joba be angry that he's pitched so well and has only gotten 1 win so far as a starter". Now I love Joba, but my response to that is that Joba is only averaging 5 innings a start! He tries to strike everyone out and throws too many damn pitches, which is why he is only averaging 5 innings per start. It's his own fault that he hasn't gotten any wins, because he's not pitching deep enough into these games, even though he's pitching great until he comes out. That's the only that bothers me about Joba. do I think he'll learn and begin to strike less guys out? Of course. But I have such a problem with this fake Joba-mania that the Yankees try and create around him. It's disgusting.

You guys think you have it bad as Knick fans, try being a Knick, Mariner and Seahawk fan. In my lifetime, approximately 78 years of rooting for these three teams and I got squat.

damn, i didn't know u were that old bro... u don't look a day over 60.

deal was reconfigured:

The Yankees are sending RHP Dan McCutchen, RHP Jeff Karstens, OF Jose Tabata and RHP Ross Ohlendorf to Pittsburgh for Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte.
