i'm explaining the situation to you cuz i wasn't sure if u were clear on it... time to change ur tampon.
GKFv2 @ 7/31/2008 9:45 PM
Let's all thank Pettite for 9 earned runs given up tonight.
MaTT4281 @ 7/31/2008 9:56 PM
Can't put all the blame on Andy. Pudge never got a chance to adequate himself with this team and signals. Girardi should have kept Molina in tonight to call for Andy, use Pudge to pinch hit in the 7th or 8th.

HORRIBLE call on Pudge at home.
nyk4ever @ 7/31/2008 10:13 PM
Not for nothing TMS, but you gotta be happy with the way Nady has played the last 2 days. He's killing the ball.

All in all, terrible game for the Yanks tonight, nothing good has come out of this game. They better take the next 2 out of 3.
Allanfan20 @ 7/31/2008 10:38 PM
It's games like these that get me terribly worried about our offense. The pitching sucked, but I'll give Pettitte a pass. He's been very good this season. If Ponson f's up manana again, he's on my sheeot list.
MaTT4281 @ 7/31/2008 10:44 PM
After winning 8 straight, we lose 4 of 5. LA scares me, especially after sweeping the BoSox in the depths of hell itself. We have to find a way to at least split this series.

Ponson isn't on your sheeot list already? He sucks. He's going to give up atleast 4 or 5 runs tomorrow, guaranteed.

Andy gave up 9 runs today, does that mean he sucks too? what are u expecting outta a #5 type starter signed to a minor league contract anyway? he's a stopgap fillin guy, that's it... Moose was pitching worse than he was last year & there were Yankee fans all over defending the guy as he was collecting his $11 million dollar paycheck.

as for Nady, to be honest i haven't been able to catch the past 2 games... what he have today, 2 singles? he had 2 doubles in BAL... hopefully that's a good sign of things to come... i don't expect him to be no .330 type hitter the rest of the way for this franchise however... i hope he proves me wrong.

Yeah dude, Pettite sucks. Cmon man. I'm not expecting anythign from Ponson. I think he blows, always have thought he blows and would rather give his start to someone else. If a guy as old as Ponson is going to suck, I'd rather have someone like Kennedy come up suck and take his bumps so we can see if the guy is worth something. Rolling out Ponson start after start is doing nothing for anyone.

Nady was 2-3 with a HR today. Yesterday he hit two doubles. What else does he have to do?

2 day sample of good hitting vs. the other days of futility... i'm gonna wait & see what i get outta this cat before i go lilly gaga over acquiring him... i've never thought he was ever anything special... just a 4th OFer type role player who was having a great season this year on a small market losing team... let's see him match what he was doing in PIT while he's in NY & i'll jump on the bandwagon, fair?

btw, Yanks made another minor trade this afternoon:

Alberto Gonzalez to the Nats for minor league pitcher, Jhonny Nunez

Nats acquire shortstop Gonzalez
Washington sends Minor League pitcher Nunez to New York
By Bill Ladson / MLB.com

WASHINGTON -- The Nationals acquired shortstop Alberto Gonzalez from the Yankees in exchange for Minor League pitcher Jhonny Nunez on Thursday afternoon.

Gonzalez is expected to report to Washington on Friday and be in uniform for the series opener against the Reds. He most likely will get some starts at shortstop, because Cristian Guzman is out with a thumb injury. Guzman is expected to be back in the lineup within three to five days.

Gonzalez, 25, played in 28 games during a pair of stints with the Yankees this season, going 9-for-52 with four runs scored.

"He's a Major League shortstop -- .250, .260 hitter. He can really play shortstop with a gun," general manager Jim Bowden said. "It's hard to get middle infielders who can do that. We now feel with Emilio Bonifacio, Cristian Guzman, who is signed for two years, Ian Desmond and Esmailyn Gonzalez, we have really stabilized our middle infield for the short term as well as the long term."

Nunez, who was acquired from the Dodgers in the Marlon Anderson trade, was a combined 2-8 with a 4.45 ERA for Class A Potomac and Double-A Harrisburg this season.

Gonzalez was acquired by the Yankees as part of the January 2007 five-player trade that sent Randy Johnson to Arizona.

last night was very dissapointing. the angels look like the 98 yankees right now.
MaTT4281 @ 8/1/2008 9:42 PM
Unbelievable...Ponson pitches a shut out and Mariano blows it in the 9th.
Finestrg @ 8/1/2008 11:56 PM
Messed up. Terrible loss. No words to describe it. I'm so sick of the Angels beating us the past few years. SO SICK OF IT!!!!! I like the Angels in general, always have, but from now on, there's no greater pleasure for me than beating these guys. Even more than beating up on the Mets.... You heard it here - I want them in the playoffs and I hope to God we get them. I know we can beat these guys!!!!!

Second, I know it's the right move and I know Girardi's gonna do it 10 out of ever 10 times it comes up, but Mariano in a tie game at home never works. Never!!!! I knew the game was over when they said he was coming in. I know it's the right move but sometimes you feel stuff in your gut and my gut told me the game was about to be lost. Crazy, but it's how I felt. There's something to it I tell ya - Mo just doesn't get as amped up as usual in those situations or something.... Neither does the crowd, and a closer feeds off the crowd. The energy in the building is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT Mo up 1-0, top 9 than in a tie game, top 9. I really think it's in his head a little now. I've seen Mo fail in so many of those situations (and the poor guy doesn't fail too often), this year and in the past, to know it doesn't work. Marte, Veras, and eventually Mark Melancon will be enough for 7th/8th innings and in tie games. If it were up to me, baseball logic aside, I never bring him in in a tie game again. And I love Mariano. Go ahead, let me here it......

there is no way any Yankee fan can expect better results than what Ponson has given us up to this point out of the bottom of the rotation... at least until Wang gets back, he's not our big problem right now... the bats not hitting w/any consistency is much more of a concern.

Mo's human bro... he won't shut down teams in every game... he was put into a tie game during the AS game against the best hitters in the NL & did fine... sure it's not a playoff game but u can't tell me those hitters aren't trying to get a hit just as much as any Angels players were last night... he also did a tremendous job in game 7 of the '03 ALCS against the Red Sox in probably the biggest game he's ever pitched in his entire career, & that was a tie game situation too.

i do think there's something to that point about focus tho when he's put into a game where it's not a save or hold situation tho... the great ones always seem to have another gear they can reach whenever they need a big out, & Mo has always shown he has that gear... just didn't come through for him last night, it's gonna happen from time to time unfortunately... it's unfortunate the hitters couldn't pick him up tonight like they've sometimes been able to do in the past.

Yankees trade Hawkins to Astros for minor leaguer
By CHRIS DUNCAN AP Sports Writer
Article Launched: 07/30/2008 05:34:32 PM PDT

HOUSTON—The busy New York Yankees traded reliever LaTroy Hawkins to the Houston Astros on Wednesday for minor league infielder Matt Cusick.

Hawkins was 1-1 with a 5.71 ERA in 33 appearances this season for the Yankees, who designated him for assignment Saturday after acquiring outfielder Xavier Nady and reliever Damaso Marte in a trade with Pittsburgh.

"I was sitting at home doing nothing and all of a sudden, a team wants me," Hawkins said on a conference call. "I'm pretty excited about that."

New York also sent cash to the Astros as part of the deal, completed one day before baseball's non-waiver trade deadline. Hawkins signed a $3.75 million, one-year contract with the Yankees last December.

"LaTroy gives us another experienced, quality arm for our bullpen," Houston general manager Ed Wade said. "We tried to sign him during the offseason and lost out to the Yankees, but we are happy to have him here for the remainder of the season. He gives (manager) Cecil Cooper one more weapon to call upon late in the game."

It was the second trade of the day for the Yankees, who also acquired star catcher Ivan Rodriguez from Detroit for reliever Kyle Farnsworth.

The 22-year-old Cusick was hitting .285 with nine home runs and 38 RBIs in 94 games for Class-A Lexington. The Astros selected him in the 10th round of the 2007 draft.

Wade said Hawkins will report to the team Friday, when the Astros open a three-game series against the New

York Mets. Houston will be his sixth team in 14 major league seasons.

Hawkins turned down the Astros in the offseason because he wanted to fulfill a lifelong dream.

"It was one of those things where, if I ever got the chance to play for the Yankees, I certainly didn't want to pass up on that opportunity," he said. "No disrespect to the Astros or anything like that, but it was one of those things that I wanted to do at one point in my career and the opportunity presented itself."

Wade said he's been looking for a reliever to ease the workload on pitchers such as Doug Brocail and Chris Sampson in the bullpen. The 41-year-old Brocail leads the team with 51 appearances. Sampson has made 21 relief appearances and 11 starts.

"We ended up getting a deal done for an experienced relief pitcher who we think can go back on the back end and help Brocail and Sampson and the other guys who we've been using late and help us get the job done," Wade said.

The Astros were 9 1/2 games behind Milwaukee in the NL wild-card race entering Wednesday night's game against Cincinnati.

Wade said his discussions with the Yankees about Hawkins occurred within the last 24 hours. The right-hander lives near Dallas but has been working out at Taylor University in Indiana since the Yankees cut him.

"I told myself that I was going to stay in shape," Hawkins said. "If I got traded, I got traded—or if I had to wait the full 10 days and get released and then sign with another team, that was the way I was going to go. I just wanted the chance to pitch again this year."

Hawkins said he would fly to Dallas on Thursday morning and drive to Houston later in the day.

"He seemed very pleased with the opportunity he's going to get here," Wade said.

Hawkins is 57-77 with 75 saves and a 4.72 ERA in his big league career. He also pitched for Minnesota (1995-2003), the Chicago Cubs (2004-05), Baltimore (2006) and Colorado (2007).

Wade said he wanted to bolster his rotation and bullpen before the trade deadline. The Astros acquired starting pitcher Randy Wolf from San Diego last week and, after landing Hawkins, Wade said he's probably done dealing before the deadline.

"There is always the possibility that something else will happen," he said. "But realistically, this was the thing that's been teed up for a while here. We'll see what happens in the next couple of hours, but there is really nothing hot or active at this point."

this homestand has been dissapointing...batting with RISP is the yankee downfall...
MaTT4281 @ 8/2/2008 6:42 PM
Yanks stop the bleeding and get a much needed win.
Mussina gives up 1 earned run and gets his 14th win.

We get Pudge for an offensive upgrade at C and Molina goes 3 for 3, 3 runs, and gets his first home run of the year. Ada boy Jose!
Finestrg @ 8/2/2008 10:52 PM
Nice! What I want to see. I actually missed the game today. How did Bruney look? How was his control and velocity???
MaTT4281 @ 8/3/2008 4:26 PM
Farnsworth screws the Yanks over one last time. Gave up a 2 run homer in the 8th to Tampa, who take a 4-3 lead.
