Just saw it on the bottomline of ESPN. Buster Olney reporting it.
I'm not a big Tex fan at all... the guy was more interested in playing with the Nationals or the Orioles until the Yankees probably blew him away with money.
he always wanted to play for ny (he idolized mattingly). that's why he came back to us.
haha sure. or the angels pulled out, red sox wouldn't up their offer, and all that was left with the nationals...cue the yanks are the place i always wanted to be talk.money

Tex is good but 170 mil? not sure about that...
I heard the nationals offer was close if not as high, I wonder why he didn't go there?
yanks $180mil/8yrs...nationals $180mil/9yrs

LOL, The Yankmes still think they can buy a title, LOL They couldn't buy one the last few years, now they spend even more and they still won't win one, what a joke!. LOL
The Mets thought they could buy Johan Santana and just make the playoffs. What a joke! lol.
The mets bought santana or traded for him? right.

Or like I said, no team will outbid the Yankees if they want him.

sorta like how the Muts got Johan last year, eh? cuz the Twins had no choice but to settle for the garbage prospects the Muts had to offer cuz they were the only team willing to pay the fare... at least in Teixeira's case he refused a comparable offer from his hometown team to come play for the Yankees... y'all got Johan last year by default... if either Boston or the Yankees had really wanted him he'd be w/either of those teams right now... same goes for your boy Beltran.

Well seeing how Santana agreed to the trade on the condition that the Mets give him a new contract, it wouldn't be wrong to say they bought him. And they had to give up several prospects for him which means they paid twice.

Both, they out-bid everyone in terms of dollars as part of the trade. There's nothing wrong with that. That's just how baseball works. The Mets and Red Sox try to buy the best product they can; they just have less money than the Yankees do.

First of all Santana was TRADED, and second the RedSox had an official offer on the table(involving Lester and others) but the Twins CHOSE the Mets offer. I know thats diffcult for you to understand.

Boston had the 2nd highest payroll in 2007.
For all the complaining that they could do, they were able to afford Tex but as always, they didn't go the extra mile to sign a star player. They are in no position to complain about the Yankees' payroll. If they had shelled out the extra $10 million to land Tex, they would be as solid of a contender as any other team.
Henry is just trying to cover his ass right now for being cheap.
The extra $10 mil? Do you mean that they offered him $170 mil and we offered $180 mil? Like TMS said, I think the offer was $160 mil and who knows if they could afford the extra $20 mil?
[Edited by - bonn1997 on 12-23-2008 10:09 PM]
Yeah, from what I've read, they were willing to go up to $170 million.
http://
http://www.bostonherald.com...
Some are saying that it was only $160 million, but I think that was when Boston left the table. My impression is that they went up to 170 in recent days.
[Edited by - s3231 on 12-23-2008 10:11 PM]
Fair enough; I suppose it's possible they could afford $170 mil but not $180 mil and made a rational calculated decision but that seems unlikely.
The Red Sux have nobody to blame but themselves. They got played and outdone by the Yankees on this one. To listen to John Henry cry about the Yankees when they offered just over $1 million more per year for Texeira is disingenous to say the least. $1 million a year is nothing to the 2nd biggest cash cow in the sport but they want everybody to believe that they're in the same boat as most mid market teams.

The Red Sox pulled that offer before the Twins made the deal with the Mets. Just like the Yankees pulled theirs. That's why the Twins desperately went back to both teams but was rebuffed.
Carlos Gomez, Phil Humber, Kevin Mulvey and Deolis Guerra = GARBAGE!

Sure, but I'll believe Theo over you when he said the twins preferred the mets offer over his. Btw, Yanks never had an offer on the table for Santana, NEVER an official offer, just one floating around the media.

Signing a free agent costs you a single draft pick. The Mets gave up 5 prospects and still had to sign Santana to what amounts to a free agent deal.
I'm glad to see that you're not going to argue that Santana only agreed to the trade on the condition that he get a fat new contract.

Considering the way the yanks draft overslot and what the mets gave up(according to TMS) that draft pick is probably worth more.

Sure, because these baseball officials don't have anything to gain from lying to the media.
No, the Yankees had an offer early on and took it off the table soon after when it became obvious that the incompetent Twins GM was going to play the Yankees, Boston and the Mets off each other as hard as he could.

whatever helps you sleep
This arguing is foolish IMO. It's really very simple. The Yankees, Mets, and Red Sox all try to buy championships but the Yankees have the most money to buy them with. That's the way the sport is structured and they're smart to take advantage of it with intelligent spending.

Sorry but the Mets are stupid to not pay over the arbitrary slot system put out by the commissioners office. The Yankees are hardly the only ones. But not every GM has a debt to pay to the commissioner for making him a GM in the first place.
