Fair deal. Only complaint is i wish he was only on a 3-year deal. But he should hold his value at that contract price anyways. Now just gotta bring JR Smith back.
ChuckBuck @ 7/9/2012 3:10 PM
I'll feel much better once Lin is resigned first.
Bonn1997 @ 7/9/2012 3:12 PM
Good deal!

There goes our chance of getting the 5m MLE, even though it was unlikely.
4m is a pretty good deal for Novak, with his skill set, defensive liability, and as a tweener.
I would have preferred a deal 2-2.5m, would rather him walk, if anything more, and have the 5m MLE instead.
I think JR Smith, believes he is worth more than Novak, with his age, ability to create his own shot, defend, and good athleticism.

I think we over payed but hey, its not my $.
I am glad we get Novak back but would have preferred a veteran minimum 3point specialist, using the 5m MLE with 2 contracts or one try to get a steal player that can be used as an asset.
Like Felton or Beasley *I know its less 1m less than what the Sun's offered but to give Beasley to sell the opportunity to get his revenge on The Heat to intensify the rivalry.
Even a player like JJ Hickson or Carl Laundry, deserve more than him.

It's not that bad of a contract, its just because we have Amare/Melo making so much $ and not being able to penetrate, facilitate, and handle the ball as a G to create really hurts.
Tax Apron, here we come, to join BKLYN.

For that $, I think a combination of

Anthony Tolliver/Boris Diaw

and

Danny Green/Courtney Lee/Terrence Williams would be better...

Markji @ 7/9/2012 3:23 PM
Glad we re-signed Novak. He is a valuable part of our team. He lead the league in 3 pt% (47.2% last year. He spreads the floor and punishes a team that double teams Melo.

Agreed 2.5MM is his market. Overpaying for a guy that does one thing exceptionally well. You would think that a guy that could barely get open in the playoffs would have not commanded almost 4MM per, but whatever.
CrushAlot @ 7/9/2012 3:25 PM
Great. Glad Knicks won the bird's rights case.

Just imagine if Lin was healthy for the playoffs. Novak would have been open all night.

Yeah man, as good as a shooter he is, we need multiple options with penetration, post presence, and then spacing, movement off the ball, and moving the ball to the open man.
We don't have enough of these quality players to create open looks for Novak vs top tier defensive teams.

IF Novak, gets 3.5m, with the market I see for other SGs, JR Smith is worth 4-6m starting salary.

gunsnewing @ 7/9/2012 3:30 PM
Next: Trade Amare

Nah, Heat defense is too good, they are very quick and rotate very well.
We need 2 quality ball handlers, with the ability to penetrate and finish, with at least 1 post presence, and ball movement after that.
Shumpert could be this person in the future with a improved handle and remaining aggressive but he got hurt.....
Wish him a speedy recover, cause we will need him, and hope Kidd will take him under his wing.

Hopefully, sometime in the near future, that'll be a REAL championship belt.

I completely agree.
I hope he has added at least ONE thing new to his game during this off season.

VDesai @ 7/9/2012 3:42 PM
Works out to 3.75mm per year- very moveable contract. Novak is an asset- pure shooters have gotten paid a lot more than that on the open market. Fine with the deal and happy to have him back
yellowboy90 @ 7/9/2012 3:44 PM
Novak goal this off season should be to change his style into a Ray Allen, Rip, Korver, and Dunlevy type shooter.

With a legit back up pg in Kidd it means JR can go back to that style too. If he sgns

VDesai @ 7/9/2012 3:47 PM
Keep in mind the Knicks may not have an MLE- the only option to keep a shooter on the roster is by paying Novak- not really concerned about the whole opportunity cost issue here- I think this was closer to zero sum- it was him or finding someone for the minimum or no one at all.
RonRon @ 7/9/2012 3:48 PM
Nothing against Novak, but we have enough 1 dimensional players.
There are so many more combinations I can think of that would be much more cost efficient.

With our lack of SGs, signing JR Smith at 2.8m is more important than signing Novak to 3.5m.
And if JR does walk, and we manage to trade for Kidd, we could be just a little short of the full 5mill MLE.

MSG3 @ 7/9/2012 3:49 PM
That's a lot of money. Glad he's back but he got a bit overpaid. If he can learn to get around screens and move like Korver and Ray Allen a bit it'll be worth it.
HARDCOREKNICKSFAN @ 7/9/2012 3:51 PM
Novak is a good pickup at a good price.

Here's to him continuing to knock down threes at a fever pitch, and hopefully expanding his game on both ends of the floor.
