Knicks · Knicks and Steve Novak Agree on 4 year Deal (page 2)

Novak is a good pickup at a good price.

Here's to him continuing to knock down threes at a fever pitch, and hopefully expanding his game on both ends of the floor.

Jmpasq @ 7/9/2012 3:55 PM
Wow way to much money. Was a Reason he was on the scrap heap.Completly unmovable contract.Who were we even bidding against.

MSG3 wrote:That's a lot of money. Glad he's back but he got a bit overpaid. If he can learn to get around screens and move like Korver and Ray Allen a bit it'll be worth it.

Yep. I praying we see an improvement in his game next season.

Jmpasq @ 7/9/2012 3:58 PM
I thought Novak was worth max 2.5 a year. I was thinking 3 years 7 million, 2 years 5 million something like that.

it's $3.5M per year for a guy who led the NBA in 3pt% and knows and fits the team. not a bad deal.

MS @ 7/9/2012 4:05 PM
Knicks need to go hard after Courtney Lee would be nice to sign and trade JR to Houston we need smart players on the floor.

its really not and I can't blame Knicks financial problems on him.
I am unsure of this move because if JR doesn't resign, we could be just a little short of having the full 5m MLE to use, if we can trade for Kidd.

But players Danny Green, Gary Neal, Randy Foye will cost probably the same or less.
While they are much more complete players.

Exactly; we're talking about a salary far below what the average NBA player makes.
Nalod @ 7/9/2012 4:11 PM
Glad he is signed so now we can bash him.

Lets hope he can work in the off season on his handle and his tan.

Is more complete the same thing as better? Are you sure it's better to be mediocre in many areas (Neal, Foye) than the best in the nation in one and below average in the rest (Novak)?

agreed. sometimes building a team is better.

and i love how people are conveniently ignoring the fact that we can't pay players from other teams $3.5M right now because we're over the cap.

and we're LUCKY we were able to win bird rights for novak and re-sign him.

We were very lucky. It means getting Kidd and Novak already, and who knows what other affects it could have.

Amnesty clause, Lin landing in our laps, birds rights case. We have had more gifts in the past year than most teams get in a decade. Without those gifts, we basically have Amare, Melo, and no one.

well, smaller gifts. some teams get lebron james or kevin durant...

crzymdups @ 7/9/2012 4:36 PM
also, it's easier to build a team once the core is in place. the amnesty was available to any team to use. lin was a total gift though.
misterearl @ 7/9/2012 4:47 PM
Exactly

There goes our chance of getting the 5m MLE, even though it was unlikely.
4m is a pretty good deal for Novak, with his skill set, defensive liability, and as a tweener.
I would have preferred a deal 2-2.5m, would rather him walk, if anything more, and have the 5m MLE instead.
I think JR Smith, believes he is worth more than Novak, with his age, ability to create his own shot, defend, and good athleticism.

I think we over payed but hey, its not my $.
I am glad we get Novak back but would have preferred a veteran minimum 3point specialist, using the 5m MLE with 2 contracts or one try to get a steal player that can be used as an asset.
Like Felton or Beasley *I know its less 1m less than what the Sun's offered but to give Beasley to sell the opportunity to get his revenge on The Heat to intensify the rivalry.
Even a player like JJ Hickson or Carl Laundry, deserve more than him.

It's not that bad of a contract, its just because we have Amare/Melo making so much $ and not being able to penetrate, facilitate, and handle the ball as a G to create really hurts.
Tax Apron, here we come, to join BKLYN.

For that $, I think a combination of

Anthony Tolliver/Boris Diaw

and

Danny Green/Courtney Lee/Terrence Williams would be better...

Knicks couldnt sign the guys you mentioned. They were only able to sign Novak because they won the bird's rights case. Knicks could not have resigned Novak, would not have Kidd and would have used the mle on Lin.

Missed this sorry for the repost.

Novak is worth it! We had almost no spacing, penetration or ball movement and that means that the Heat could just play their zone, which allows them to be within 2 steps of the paint and the 3 point line. The main reason is that Lebron and Wade are so fast that they can close off the paint and still get back to the 3pt line. However, we didn't even have any penetration to draw them away from Novak. They could just have someone stay right near him cuz our offense was too simple and predictable and it didn't force the D to adjust and cover the entire court. This year we'll have more penetration and spacing so Novak should be able to get open looks. Also we didn't set enough picks for Novak to get open or use him coming off curls. This is partly Woody's fault for going away from those plays that worked.

Agreed, and I'm glad to see him back. I think he earned his check. Adding Kidd and having Lin back will only mean more opportunities for Novak.

Even though JR can handle the ball and create his own shot I can't think of a singe game I didn't want to scream at him for making a stupid play. He's very streaky and often makes poor decisions and stupid fouls when it matters...gives me Nate Rob flashbacks. Again having Kidd and Lin to make those decisions will help JR too... but out of the two, Novak is the safer option. Novak can shoot the lights out on any given day and now we have the PGs to get him open shots so with his skill it's pretty safe to say he'll remain a valuable asset. And another thing about Novak was that he said all along that he wanted to be in NY and play here whatever it takes...he could have gotten paid anywhere despite his playoff performance but he chose to be here. Does JR want to play here? He seems ambivalent despite being a Jersey guy. We don't know how committed he is...and while ultimately I do think it would be good to have him back, I don't think the money we can offer is exactly convincing. I still can't believe the Raptors are going to pay Fields 20mil...
