Knicks · Its absolute insanity to NOT match Lin and here is why (page 3)

earthmansurfer wrote:I think the Lin not being matched thing is CLEARLY personal. What Briggs said I have said here and there. I mean it's pretty clear Lin would at the very least be an asset to trade later if need be (before the tax implications kick in). We could trade Stat the last year of the contract more than likely as well. This just has written "personal" all over it. Omar Asik has the same deal for 3pts and 5rpg and he is 26. No big deal there. Seems like the media and half the fans are buying into Dolans story here.

I won't be getting league pass without Lin and will go back to being the occasional fan without Lin around. He was the reason I really go into things. I think a lot of people will really be fed up with this decision and start watching games elsewhere. Being a fan means expressing your opinion and not blindly following a team just like being a citizen means asking questions and not just taking answers from the man.

I emailed MSG and recommend others to do the same. If the effort on the forums went into contacting MSG and such, resigning Lin would be a done deal.

good post man agree with everything!

Knicks must match Lin and work around the luxury tax by trading Amare by year 3

Easier said than done.

BRIGGS wrote:His first two years are CAP friendly--affordable and he could easily play his way into a higher yielding contract than 5mm. While year 3 is high for production today---will it be high in 3 years? And can you use that 15mm $ contract when we have NO cap room in a S+T if needed. Could we simply sign Lin and then trade him during the year for assets--a team was willing to give him 8mm. There is obvious bad blood between Carmelo and quite possibly Dolan against Lin---remember Dolan has more money than God--Lin isnt going to change his life---Dolan is all about control. Its a rising star that had taken attention away from Melo and maybe even Dolan himself. But its not good business--no team can say with a certainty that year 3 our contract structure will look like this. Even Amare can be traded 3 years from now--you do base a signing on year 3 lets let cool hands prevail and bring Lin back--if Houston really wants him---two first round picks when they are able to do a deal.

We will be.so over the cap we wont be able to get back a player in a sign and trade, per the new CBA. At least that is one of the results of being so over the tax limitations, as pregiously stated.

I believe the Knicks should match, so this isn't me arguing against that, but consodering the new CBA, we will be more limited in year 3 than people think.

Anji @ 7/16/2012 7:01 AM
Respect ya Briggs, think you are a guy that enjoys young talent, but I think you are way off.

The knicks were telling the world they would match the 28 million dollar 4year deal. The one with the year 3 option.

That means that in three years, if the for what ever reason, Lin looks more like Jose Calderon than Steve Nash........ you cut him, do a new deal, trade his 9million deal, ect.

15 million dollars year three, nobody is taking that. Nobody body is approaching their salary cap or the Luxury tax to take on a Kirk Hirinch like deal if Lin flops.

Im guessing we all can make up conspiracy theories when the facts are when the first offersheet came out, the World knew the knicks would match. So this ego garbage really doesn't hold weight.

The question is you are the GM and with the new CBA baring down on your team, this is your job on the line....... you think Lin is worth a max deal year three. Because if you don't, if there is a part of you that thinks injury, 7 great games, the nba was in a down lock out year, Lin snuck up on the league..........You ain't going all LIN.

Not for the max. Not when every team holds you hostage when you make trade, but some how they are going to do us a favor to take Jeremy Flop off our hands at 15million dollars...........because we only look to trade him if he flops. Not when Felton can give you an average 14/7 at the point guard position for 3.5-4 million, better defense and a contract you know you can trade.

When you consider that Nash’s top salary was $13.1 million and he was a two-time MVP, you can understand why the Rockets are on the verge of taking on a terrible deal of their own making.

For once, the Knicks should let someone else overpay.

Actually, it would be the second time this offseason, since they wisely let Landry Fields go to Toronto. His three-year deal is around $20 million. From the looks of it, the Raptors were not paying attention to the New York-Miami playoff series, when someone asked Dwyane Wade what Fields did well.

Wade had to pause for several seconds before he came up with this doozy: “He’s a very good cutter.”

Fields gets to make his next cut up to Toronto. By Tuesday at midnight, Lin should be cutting down to Houston, to play for the Rockets.

dude, every report is saying the knicks won't match. and they signed kidd, traded for felton and signed prigioni. they have 3 PGs. they aren't matching. it's over.

stupidity, egos and insecurity rule again. and make a mockery of the fact that we bothered to care.

39, 35 and FAT. This is why they SHOULD ABSOLUTELY keep Lin! Kidd is old and cannot play more than 20 a night. Prigioni is also old and very NBA inexperienced. Talk about not knowing what Lin will be, what the hell is Prigioni? He is cheap so, Ok.
As for Felton, he will get his 13 and 5 a night but there is no magic with him. He does not have the vision.

As for Lin, NY is making another huge mistake. Countless numbers of people were following the Knicks simply because of Lin. They will lose all of them. That is a huge loss in $$ from ratings, merchandising and tickets too!

On the court, I believe that Lin only scratched the surface of what he can do. He is 23! He is a smart guy. He will learn the game even more and continue to work hard. I will bet that he averages 18/9 in Houston, if he goes there.

The thing is, they stumbled on this guy and got him for nothing! And even if he is just decent, he already is the 4th piece of a solid team! Just like Boston drafted Rondo and were thrilled to learn what he could do for them, the Knicks should be loving this. They finally found a real PG and they are going to just let him go???!!!! This is dumber than not drafting a Lawson a few years ago!
What STUPIDITY!

IMO, The problem with this whole thing is #7 again. He cannot play with anyone who might dominate the ball more than he.

All because of Melo, NY has given up 2 of my favorite Knicks over the last 10 years. Starphucking! Gallo and Lin and countless other good players.

A few weeks ago, one of the local radio stations had it Nets or Knicks, make your stand. At the time, it was easy. Knicks forever. The more I see them operate, it gets harder. 38 years of being a Knicks fan!

Dolan, you suck!

ha I said the same thing in another thread. Without Lin we lose our 3rd option on offense assuming Amare can even get back to being a 2nd option

+1 Great point!

Trade both. Keep Lin. We'd still be a .500 team and we'd clear 40 to 50 mil/year in cap space.

With the cap space we may be able to sign a TRUE super star, but let’s hope the Knicks don’t make the same mistake again and pay premium for a marginal super star

this is a three year deal which lines up Melo, Stat and Chandler. One year of being in a bad way financially. I can't believe Dolan, who blew so much money on bad deals that had longer term implications, is going to let Lin walk for nothing.

True - with hindsight we'll be able to judge this better- but when has a team given up such a potential talent for nothing? I don't think its there - but this is up there with the Red Sox giving up Babe Ruth.

What is really crazy is that everyone blames the tax implications all on Lin for year 3. What about the 3.5 they just added from Felton? That will cost the team an extra $ 9m too! What a joke this all is. The contracts of Camby and Kidd are 3 year deals too! Not to mention the outrageous money that Stat and Melo will be making.

IT's so dumb. Empty your pockets Dolan! Keep the better player!

Felton will not cost the Knicks $43 million dollars in year 3 alone.

Also, Felton will not turn the ball over 8 times a game against the Heat, and will actually stay in front of Jose Calderon.

So paying a 42 yr old and a 41 yr old, 7 million dollars is ok?

It will be oK, to pay because of a broken down STAT and a ball stopping Melo, $50M?

They will be able to make deals to come under the cap if they need to.
