Last year Knicks were all in on championship talk and then Woody let everyone off the hook by talking about division title lowering expectations. This year's expectations are even lower. I Don't understand Woody's need to say what he does, sometimes it's best to let the team play it out. When your coach doesn't believe in the team as a Championship contender what kind of precedence does that set for the team.

What facts do you have? What News report? Where did you get this information from?
Didn't he say his goal was to make the conference finals and then from there the Knicks had a chance at going all the way? Seems a little disingenuous to call a guy out for setting a realistic goal when you spend most of your time posting that the Knicks can't win the championship and that the coach is all about the regular season and gimmicks.

Maybe it is realistic of him to say that. But it's not what you expect from your Coach there are fans on this board that are exuding more confidence in the team. Looks like Woody has gone from Championship talk to step pyramid approach. He is talking ECF and possibly finals.

I think you are a bit down on Woodson. Gimmicky, regular season coach etc. I think you are trying too hard to find fault. If the Knicks can get by either the Bulls or the Heat they will have made it past the best or second best team in the league. Most likely they have to get by one of those teams to get to the conference finals.
i'm not big on forecasting from coaches, period.
he's trimming the bushes so that, in his mind, he will find some security for his job.
to me this betrays a lack of confidence in his ability to coach a team.
let's hope for the best but be ready for a bumpy ride this year.

knicks should shoot for 3rd seed this season. the top 5 teams are going to be tough outs regardless so facing a 6th seed is the best chance of getting to the 2nd round. knicks are a playoff team but they are not better than 6 other teams.

I would guess that the Knicks will try to get as high a seed as they can. The Heat and Bulls will no doubt be very tough. I think this year the top 8 teams in the East are going to be strong competition. Woody and the Knicks need only be concerned with themselves tho. This team has just as much talent as every other team in the East. IMO the other teams are coming up to where the Knicks were in the regular season last year. Not only did the Knicks start this season as a top team in the East but they too have improved as a team. Woody has the right to be conservative in his statements. It doesn't mean a thing about the reality of how good the team actually will be this year.

heat and bulls
pacers and nets
all tough no matter how you slice it.
after them i really don't know... atlanta?
anyway, trying for the highest seed possible may be counterproductive if what it does is wear the team out. conditioning is always a question for me with some knicks, and although younger than last year the team still has martin and pablo in their mid-30s. chandler has mileage too.
Woody's a good regular season coach but I feel his statements let the air out of the team. Last year all we heard was championship talk and the Knicks were displaying championship aspiration in their play. Knicks lose two games and Woody goes on record that were just trying to win our division. What happened to Championship and getting the best record. The team has the pedal to the metal and Woody pulls the emergency brakes with his statements. If you give the players a chance to be let off the hook they will take it every time. The scariest part of last year was once the Knicks met their coaches goal of division title after that what were you going to get from the team. Poor player performance poor coaching. That is exactly what we saw in the playoffs.
It's like a sales meeting. The boss never puts up numbers that are attainable. I don't understand Woody logic in this instance.
You realize that him saying we're going to win a championship or not saying it, doesn't actually alter reality.
What a odd thing to despair over- couldn't you have at least waited for preseason to begin before you started to over react to everything?

you don't see how it 'alters reality'?

it's not about that,
it's what you put in the air, everything you say has an effect on those around you,
and if you are head coach of nyk, your words carry a lot of juice, and this juice spills all over the players

Look no one knows whos gonna win the east. I think Woody said the smart thing. No need to say something so that the Nets and Bulls can hang on their locker door. Just let the Knicks show what they can do on the floor. Look what happened last season when they came wearing black. An injured dog is most viscous and the Celtics came out fighting. I think Woody was smart just being low key. Be smart play the game , win the game , shake hands with your opponents , smile and go home.
Don't whack Woody. Stroke Woody.
Interesting thread....
Woody tempers expectations....no problen, its the right thing to do.
Fans do it....its a problem.
I love it.

Very few coaches would say "nothing". I think he handled it right. What could be gained from saying to the MEDIA that they expect to win a title? I'm pretty sure in private that the team does feel it can win a title and has that as the goal. It really doesn't matter much.
