I forgot they still have their amnesty. If they use it on Boozer that'd put them in good position if Melo takes less then a max deal. Maybe somewhere in the 12-14M range not knowing how their current roster salaries escalate??

After thinking on this a few minutes, they wouldn't be dumb enough to use their amnesty on Boozer when Rose hasn't been able to stay healthy. Rose has 3 years left at Max.
Chicago would just sign him. A sign and trade doesn't benefit Melo or the Bulls at all.

Max players signing for the MLE would be something that has never happened before. They would need to move, at the very least, Boozer to a team under the cap. and likely Gibson as well. Like you said before, they can just amnesty Boozer, Rose signed his contract after the lockout and only contracts signed before the lockout can be amnestied.

so basically, baring any other moves and the use of the amnesty on Boozer, Bulls would have approx 12.6M to sign Melo outright. Do they also have cap holds for their 2014 draft picks?

A deal with Chicago is the most likely scenario, tho it's also possible that other teams will jump in if the Knicks make it clear that they would do a Sign n Trade. This would bring in teams like the Clippers too. This thing could get very complicated as it moves along.

When you do the trade checker are you doing with Melo's new salary involved. I know you can't really do that but keep that in mind when you do the trade checker because Melo's salary will likely be less.

If you take Gibson, it negates some of the value of getting Melo. More importantly, what are we going to do with him as a rebuilding team? Remember, he's 28 years old.
And for the record, Jimmy Butler isn't anything special. He's basically a bigger Iman Shumpert that is a worse and more inconsistent shooter. And Tony Snell isn't far behind in terms of being an expendable asset. I'd prefer Mirotic and both of their picks, who they won't be able to afford if they sign Melo anyway.
