A trade would have to be built around Boozer and Taj Gibson to make the numbers work. I would need Butler included to even start the conversation. They would need to take Felton if his contract isn't voided by the league by then (it likely won't be). I want Charlotte's pick which the Bulls own (approx 14). Also, Snell if I can get him
or, Chicago can just sign him as a free agent?

I forgot they still have their amnesty. If they use it on Boozer that'd put them in good position if Melo takes less then a max deal. Maybe somewhere in the 12-14M range not knowing how their current roster salaries escalate??
Nalod wrote:or, Chicago can just sign him as a free agent?
Maybe he'll try to "force" his way to Chicago

After thinking on this a few minutes, they wouldn't be dumb enough to use their amnesty on Boozer when Rose hasn't been able to stay healthy. Rose has 3 years left at Max.
Chicago would just sign him. A sign and trade doesn't benefit Melo or the Bulls at all.

Max players signing for the MLE would be something that has never happened before. They would need to move, at the very least, Boozer to a team under the cap. and likely Gibson as well. Bulls have 63M commited next year. That likely 4M and change over the cap. http://www.sheridanhoops.com/2013/08/08/...

Like you said before, they can just amnesty Boozer, Rose signed his contract after the lockout and only contracts signed before the lockout can be amnestied.

Can't a sign and trade net him more money then just signing with them outright?
so basically, baring any other moves and the use of the amnesty on Boozer, Bulls would have approx 12.6M to sign Melo outright. Do they also have cap holds for their 2014 draft picks?
Bump since i might have finally gotten one right :)
A deal with Chicago is the most likely scenario, tho it's also possible that other teams will jump in if the Knicks make it clear that they would do a Sign n Trade. This would bring in teams like the Clippers too. This thing could get very complicated as it moves along.
Boozer and picks you can start Melo anywhere from 19-22mm per--we dont need/want Taj Gibson although I think hes a nice player. What we want is to get rid of
JR Smith
Ray Felton
See if we can trade Tyson Chandler for assets if not absolutely keep him for next year
If Melo really wants out to Chi--get picks 16+19
Resign Cole A to a reasonable deal 3 years 6.3mm--something like that 2.1mm per
Resign Toure Murry to a three year 3.6mm $ contract
And then we'll go from there--we need a pro PG and would love to see Mils take the 3 years 10mm but I dont think he will. but we'll see.
Were going to need to fill out up to 9 spots so maybe we get 2-3 drafted or undrafted rooks 1-2 signs of our own and 3-4 free agents 3 of which will be min
That would keep nice flexibility at back end of roster
2 picks--salaries 1.8 1.6 or as low as 500k
Cole A 2mm Toure 1.3 Patty M???3.1 rest 1.4
everything that can be moved if need be.
We need assets we need to get picks either drafted or undrafted and hit on 2 of them.
Just saw Afflalo mentioned in a trade rumor with Chicago. Numbers work in a three way trade. Knicks get Afflalo and Boozer. Orlando gets Gibson and Melo goes to Chicago.
From there it's anyone's guess what complimentary players and picks exchanged, but the core of a deal is there and works in trade checker

I saw that earlier. Afflalo and Boozer for Melo isn't terrible.

When you do the trade checker are you doing with Melo's new salary involved. I know you can't really do that but keep that in mind when you do the trade checker because Melo's salary will likely be less.

Even less terrible if we wind up getting our pick back from Orlando in the deal.....ironic even and good karma.

If you take Gibson, it negates some of the value of getting Melo. More importantly, what are we going to do with him as a rebuilding team? Remember, he's 28 years old.
And for the record, Jimmy Butler isn't anything special. He's basically a bigger Iman Shumpert that is a worse and more inconsistent shooter. And Tony Snell isn't far behind in terms of being an expendable asset. I'd prefer Mirotic and both of their picks, who they won't be able to afford if they sign Melo anyway.

No doubt a deal would be more complicated then i outlined, but the big pieces are there.

Unless Melo is signing a contract starting at $11 million per year, that ain't happening.

Yeah, it can. So you know he'll want to do it.
