Hahahahaha yeah cuz who wants to be handcuffed by a bratty superstar? Melo isn't bratty, I'm just adding for sake of argument. If Melo was acting up to that level though, I think playing hardball and then explainin to the fans what's going on would be fine with me. No one player should be above the team. That's why we are in this mess trying to rebuild. If a player sees that as a reason not to sign here then we don't want them. On the flipside a player could see that as a sign the organization is standing for something and is committed to winning. Flip it how you like, but you need to stand for something in life.

You forget this is an organization. Business decisions have to be made from time to time, but you are dealing with people first and want people to want to work for you. You don't want to develop a reputation as being difficult to work with. If it comes to the point where things do not work out with Melo, agents are going to look at Knicks one of 2 ways: Either they want to work with players to find a common solution, or they don't care about people at all. There is always common ground for a resolution. Being a likeable organization goes a long way. If you deal with a bratty player, you work with him and his people to find a solution, that's it.

You know another thing Phil might wanna tell him--if opportunities open up where winning teams are interested in acquiring him and Phil's ready to deal only to have Melo reject them, he could be vilified here. If we have an opportunity to restock the shelves with a few assets and send Melo to a winner to play with one of his friends etc. and then it comes out that he nixed it, you better believe a lot of people will be pissed. Tell him that too. If he's so concerned about image, let him chew on that for awhile.

For certain players who become problems, absolutely. If they do something illegal or against team policy, yes, then you need to conduct business accordingly. But i don't think that's what we are talking about here.
