Knicks · DSJr is quietly emerging (page 1)

ESOMKnicks @ 3/6/2021 1:03 PM
Since the trade averaging 8.3 points and 3.8 assists for Detroit. Had a triple double the other day, scored 12 against us, scored 17 against Sancto. Finding his 3 point range. The Knicks let a really good one get away.

How come no one is saying we got owned by Detroit in this trade? How come no one is sore about it like over KP?

Cuz Knicks have DRose and are over .500. Smith is starting for a bad team and should have some numbers.
Reason nobod is harping on it is because we are happy.

Cause we didn't and DSJr still sucks

Panos @ 3/6/2021 1:12 PM
He did less than nothing while here.
Cut bait.
TheGame @ 3/6/2021 1:17 PM
The Knicks were not going to resign DSJr, so getting Rose for him was a good move. Even at this stage of his career, Rose is a much better player. Yeah we had to add a second round pick, but it was our worst pick and the team didn’t really want to bring in 4 rookies next year. It was a solid trade for both teams, as Detroit needed a pg and DSJr is probably better than what they had left after Rose (and Hayes is hurt).
BigDaddyG @ 3/6/2021 1:33 PM
Even Pistons fans are saying this deal is win-win. I'm glad DSJ is able to pull it together some, but it's telling that he's only able to produce in low stakes games with high usage.

Is this thread about DSJ or Mudiay?

You mean this whole time, they were two different people?

Because he’s only averaging 8.3pts and 3.8 assists and no one liked him

ramtour420 @ 3/6/2021 3:51 PM
If anything we got owned by DSJ. He played starter minutes for us in the beginning of the season. Playing like hot garbage, if anyone forgot. Now he is getting it together. Too bad he decided to turn it on after getting traded.
nykshaknbake @ 3/6/2021 7:21 PM
Sometimes people just need a change of venue after a long string of failure. The coaching, other players may have been perfect but it just wasn't goining to happen here. We gave him every opporotunity to thrive. If he gets it together more power to him, but he needed to go for himself and us.
GustavBahler @ 3/6/2021 11:33 PM
Glad DSjr found a place where he fits in. Have to admit I was a bit surprised he turned the corner so fast. Maybe a little pissed lol. nykshaknbake is right, a change of scenery can do wonders.

We've seen a lot of good PGs get allergic to the rim when they wind up on the Knicks. Takes a special PG to embrace the challenge, the pressure, and deliver. Believe RJ has that attitude, regardless of where he's slotted.

Id rather try to draft that kind of PG this year, than pay through the nose for one.
Maxing out a PG has very rarely resulted in a title over the last 25 years or so.

I mean, I could ask Detroit’s record since the DSJ trade, but I am not sure anyone cares. I like that DSJ was ready to play G league ball to get his reps in. He was stuck behind a lot of players on this roster for PT. Thing is, I could have seen him coming into the year and winning the starting position out right. He didn’t. And in the games that followed, he played himself out of the rotation.

Now, I really hope for the best for him. Hope he learned how to work hard on both sides of the ball. Maybe he finds a good groove up there. But Rose was the better player for this team hands down. It really lacked veteran leadership.

To be clear, Rose didn’t take DSJ’s job. He took Austin Rivers. They just used Smith to clear a roster spot.

NY is not for everybody. Some thrive and some fold. Good and bad players

Knixkik @ 3/7/2021 7:56 AM
Saying he’s emerging isn’t really accurate. He was unplayable in NY and maybe has improved to slightly less unplayable at best? He’s putting up mediocre numbers on a bad team where he’s the only PG option. He may have difficulty finding an nba spot next year if he doesn’t have a big second half of the year. When you think about someone like Mudiay already being out of the league, I don’t see where Smith will remain in the league unless he really improves.

Yep, I totally agree. With him it was so many variables. But one thing for sure, after that time the Garden booed him he was a broken man, never really played a good game since then for us.

He played well for us at first too. He is clearly limited. His ceiling is a bench guard

Those “fans” who booed him were probably the same ones who screamed we should have taken him over Frank.

8 points and 4 assists is "emerging"?
Nalod @ 3/7/2021 11:24 AM
He might be emerging into Mudiay. “Manny” had a good season last year off the bench in Utah and was getting good reviews. Can’t find a thing on him for this season here or abroad. Kid is only 23-24.
He acted 14pts a game here and Fiz did “fix” him up a bit. That he is out of the league or priced himself out of the league I don’t know.
Dennis seems to be in better shape and Thibs had him playing better defense. Knicks at the very least put him n a situation to get minutes and an opportunity to showcase starting for an NBA team. Those opportunities are few and far between.
Where does Dennis go from here? Might want to ask Detroits coach and GM if they are happy with him. For all we know he got a certain window to “Audition” and parameters/goals to reach. Could be some stats, non stat measurement we can see, attitude, etc. “Do these 5 things to this XX degree and we’ll give you a two year 5mm per contract”.
Mudiay did well here stat wise but we all saw it did not win games. He also got a nice gig under Synder in UT but why did he not stay? Might have been money they went in another direction. Its a tough business.
Frank in our minds was projecting in this sphere but somewhere between love and hate of fans lies the reality he plays really good near elite defense and an offense that is evolving. At 22 he will likely get a contract with a team committed to developing him. How much? IDK. Im not a “Told yah” type of fan that cares about being prophetic about a players future.

Lol! The premise behind this thread is hilarious. It is exactly how people got duped by DSJ in the first place, looking at box scores and making determinations based on that. DSJ had 12 inconsquenial points against us and that was impressive? A triple double in a blowout win with massive garbage time?

Do people forget DSJ had some good stat games when he first arrived here? Watch the games not the box scores. I'm happy he's in a position with no pressure playing meaningless games allowing him piling up stats.
