Knicks · Bullish on Deuce (page 10)

Deuce doesn’t have any value yet, since he hasn’t played. Rokas maybe and definitely Grimes who everybody loves. But it doesn’t look that serious unless they was moving Randle for an all star player. Sounds like they just trying to make room for cam and the young guys which gives thibs the green light to play them major mins that cam Obi and IQ are ready for. We couldn’t move Noah but they found a way to remove him from the roster. They will find a way to make room for the youths if a trade doesn’t happen, while keeping part of the core from last year. Plus our picks have enough value…to sweeten any deal.
Burks Kemba and EF can help teams win now if placed in the right rotation. And I agree with EF when he said we / thibs needs to adjust when teams take away the things we trying to do. We have too much offense to not be able to score. That slight dig at thibs and sticking up for Kemba plus the losing was his ticket out. Even though he’s absolutely correct. EF needs a system to be impactful. Some players like cat on the wolves don’t. He can get his own bucket. Thibs needs players who don’t need much offensive creativity to score. As long as they play D. More on ball defensive 2 way players is what we need and why we drafted grimes and deuce.

Absolutely my take as well. Mitch would be a force to reckon with if he had someone t to get him the ball. As we saw once this year, forgot which game it was, he can actually put it on the floor a bit. Playing in a PnR scheme would turn him into an all-star, I think. He would just need to work on his free throws. But under Thibs is all ISO win or lose
EF either sucks by our fans accord or is not shooting well due to chemistry issues and be seen as a complimentary piece by another team.
These “reports” are likely just logical observations. Fans see randle as the architect of some evil and want him gone thinking his extraction will do the trick. Im not convinced this is at all. Im HOPING its a chemistry thing and if true moving EF and Kemba allow for more time on the floor with comlimentary pieces to each other. A younger JJ Reddick in place of EF could have worked.
The knicks offense ball movement as even JVG said at times was very good even with the starters. Its the lack of urgency, defense, and fundamentals that looks bad. Randle is not up to par but EF is guilty of it as is Kemba if he is not breaking down the defense. If not he is taking up space. Im not blamiing one over another but what I perceive is the cause of play. I am not sold that Randle had his one season and took the money an ran. We no doubt miss Drose and his closing at games end. He provided offensive punch and playmaking. Rj is there now but lets be real, as great as this is he is still 21 and not yet the elite weapon that Drose is when healthy. We shoulld not take for granted he can stat at that level again.
The Duece to Sims Pick and roll in Miami garbage time is not a validation of being ready for prime time.
I have to admit Simm’s looked like he jumped from a trampoline! I am not anti Obi either. Im just not sure he is ready for 30 min of play. I can move on from Randle if need be, but I have more questions then anwers.
Nalod wrote:Kemba could be a buy out candidate so he can move to a team of his choice. Burks is easier to move. Its possible he is ok with sitting out the rotation the rest of this season and get moved over the summer.

That would be AWESOME. Has any player signed after being bought out and then was bought out again? My head is exploding

Jim……I personally saw Mitch work on dribble moves and step back 3pters. It was just dumb luck that Mitch workouts was at lifetime fitness in texas where I lived for a few years b4 he was as drafted. But this reminds me of Ben simons how he makes 3s in the off season but doesn’t shoot in the game. And to Mitch point those move was against nobody. When he played pickup with a special select group, he looked how we see him now. So he has it in him, just need the confidence to bring it out during the games.
McBride plays D. Even if he is not shooting well the energy and defense are there and Burks and IQ will themselves shoot better because they get to play their natural position shooting guard

With Deuce and Rokas showing their talents in Europe and the GLeague a part of me just wants the FO to get a stopgap upgrade at the point by the trade deadline i think one of these 2 players can be the starting point of the future. Or just make a big move by the deadline for a longterm starting point, i wont be disappointed packaging 1 of these two players for Murray, Shai Alexander or Fox. At this point i will pass on Brunson because of the price tag. If the FO are confident with the strong ties they have with Bronson then just go after him as a free agent.
So I have no idea where u stand on this topic. Sounds like u agree with everybody.
Well this is my stance on deuce. My only reason for playing deuce meaningful nba mins now is to see or get a glimpse into his future before rose comes back. Gleague can be misleading vs going against nba talent. But I’m sure thibs must be analyzing his play in practice because he’s willing to play grimes. Or maybe he was forced to play grimes due to injuries and now he has no choice. I believe is deuce was in the position where thibs had to give him mins, his production or impact on wins would force thibs to play him more. I just have a gut feeeling that deuce will help us produce more wins. I’m not looking or caring about his individual stats where most like to highlight. I believe he’s a winner and gives the starting unit what they need to win period.
On top of that the starting lineup needs two things that deuce provides. A defensive PG and some energy injected into that unit. Since thibs doesn’t want to mess with the chemistry in the second unit, I thought thibs had plenty of time to put deuce in the rotation and see if he’s worth waiting on for next year vs giving Brunson 20 mil. I have a feeling both deuce and Brunson would impact the win column the same. If that’s the cast why pay Brunson 20 mil?
Every starting position doesn’t need to make 20 plus mil. Sometimes a rookie on a rookie salary can fit with the vets, if all they need from him is defense, energy and a willing passer who can also hit open shots. And his pace is high since he’s always looking up in transition for those quick buckets which is what we need. And that’s how we won vs the queens.
I don’t believe in this starting rookies too early which is why knox is who he is. If you have the confidence to play then you play and learn on the job. But regardless, grimes has adjusted well. I believe duece will adjust well. And he doesn’t have to start right now. I like how thibs worked in grimes at a slow pace by slowly increasing his mins. I’m hoping a trade will happen so they can do the same with deuce and cam. The team needs these guys to get mins. Both are 2 way guards / wings along with grimes.

I can see 2 reasons why he’s not.
Either they are trying to increase the value of the vets prior to the trade deadline or they want to showcase deuce in the gleague to see if there’s a larger trade brewing where deuce will be included, in order to save grimes and IQ who the FO says is untouchable.

Or there is gap between the leagues?
When he is ready, he’ll get a chance. Might not be this season. ITs a good thing what he doing in westchester. Shows promise.

Facts….the only thing we may disagree with is what’s the best development approach? Gleague against non nba players. Or my approach is let him play against nba players as a rotational backup PG to IQ or Drose. Because the gap is so large, as you pointed out. Deuce will need time to adjust. I rather we use this time for him to adjust, since we are not in a position to make any noise in the playoffs, if we even make the playoffs. So come next year he will hit the ground running.

Saw the last few games. I may be coming on board the Deuce train. Also hoping to see Luka play some as well. Just do not think Thibs will change his MO and let these kids in. Not even if we are out of it and playing the last few games of the year.

I don't really understand what Thibs standards are for rotation time. From the outside looking in, it seems like Vets start higher in the rotation pecking order and only lose their role based on practice and not their actual performance? So if you show up and give it at practice, you can be -20 plus minus and keep your starting role? I'm guessing here.
In game, you can lose minutes (not your role) based on performance (e.g. Payton starts for 8 minutes and then pulled for the rest of the game behind Rose??).
It speaks of a profound loyalty to vets and belief that vet players will work their way out of slumps. Perhaps there is a protectionism there that rooks may need more practice to become NBA worthy.
My best guess is that the FO and Thibs give promises to Vets when they sign contracts that they will get specific roles and Thibs honors those promises - for better or worse.
In this theory, Kemba and Fournier have starting role promises that they are holding onto despite the fact that the team doesn't work.
