So who is that #1 option we could target for 2024/25?

Trade or FA S/T
I think there is a possibility Embiib comes up if Harden goes back to Houston. He would have to force issue but NY is a good fit. No idea what that exchange would look like.
After that: OG, his style and fit are just too good of a match and it's a position of need, he can be fluid from PF/SF and guard everywhere. Very interchangeable wing defender with Grimes/Hart.

Some Knicks fans want to sprint before they can crawl and think timelines for potential years-long dynasties, but I'm only thinking the length of Randle-Brunson-Mitch's contracts and THIS current cap era (which is going to change in '25-26.
I'm looking at Kawhi OR PG-13.
Either would be PERFECT for the Knicks at the three. And as opposed to having an issue with them being vets on the wrong side of 30, I think for a couple of years it would be ideal.
And they're western conference (one less barrier to a trade) and neither have long contracts, and there's issues in Clipper-world right now. And given their age, contract status and health issues, they (theoretically) wouldn't have a KD-level price tag.
If Barrett, Fournier, and some (relatively) significant draft capital could get either one, I pull that trigger in a second.
I know both are west coast guys and NY might not be their first choice, and Ballmer might be the type just to run it back anyway (like Cuban he seems to get attached to his stars), but I take a 2 year run of Brunson-Grimes-George/Kawhi-Randle-Robinson in a heartbeat, albeit with some regular season PT issues.

Trade or FA S/T
Some notable 2024 UFAs (at this point- of course always subject to extending/re-signings)......Klay, Middleton, Harden, Siakam, KP, Jaylen Brown, Daymond Green, Sabonis, Trent Jr, Kuzma
https://www.spotrac.com/nba/free-agents/...
For 2023 - if we can clear cap-space, I like both Jerami Grant (UFA) and Cam Johnson (RFA) to play either both starting SF & backup PF (when Randle is taking a breather).
Wonder if we can entice the Pelicans to move Ingram. Something like RJ, Fournier, Obi and Picks for Ingram and Nance Jr. would work from a Salary perspective
JB / IQ / Rokas
Grimes / IQ
Ingram / J Hart (re-signed)
Randle / Nance Jr.
Mitch / I-Hart
Deeper Bench - Deuce, Sims & Draft Pix
Bring back Taj at minimum as a player/coach
Let Rose fly unless he wants to return for the Minimum.

Now we are talking at least IMO.

I think the Hart trade closed the door very firmly on the cap space prospect. I'd guess until the 2025 TV deal explosion

Se above. almost certainly the Knicks are out of the significant FA business for a while.

I get the logic (somewhat) with the RJ-Zion connection, but that would likely require the Pels blowing it up entirely. Hard to see McCollum not being the guy first in line to go before Ingram. And they already have significant (and likely quality) draft capital.

Likely right. Thinking J Hart will take Rose money slot and the only flex will be on the Trade Market using EF salary as cap filler.

Yeah, Ingram seems to have very positive Two man lineups. Not sure why they move him. He and Zion appear to have one of their best net ratings on the floor. They need help at Center, their centers are in all of their worst Net Rating lineups, between Hayes and Valancius. They can probably get their guy with the Laker's pick this year 7(?).
As Martin pointed out, there might not be the cap space available to bring in a star. Would have to be a trade. Which would probably affect our depth.
I still believe a less expensive option would be to promote IQ to the starting lineup. Better chance of keeping him in NY. Pretty sure he wants to start somewhere.
The advantage of IQ starting at SG, is getting a player who has shown he can drop 20pts off the ball, while being a distributor as well. We have 3 ball dominant players in RJ,Randle, Brunson. IQ compliments their style of play. Because his ability as a tweener allows him to alternate between being a scoring threat, and a distributor with ease.
IQ in time could be the other star we need in the starting lineup, who can add more scoring, while bringing out the best of his teammates game as well.
That would leave the FO to add more depth to the bench, more good role players, instead of one very expensive star. Giving up 1st round picks to boot.
Do we know that Zion and RJ actually like each other? Sure they were teammates for 7 or so months but that was 4 years ago. They have history together. Don't mean they like each other and the basis of a trade.
We also assuming RJ has hit his ceiling at age 22.
Are we worried we mess up IQ deal like Mavs messed up on Brunson?
If we think that much of IQ, (hypothetical) we could trade brunson.
I like IQ, but I like Grimes upside and movement withoutt he ball better as a starter and hope that translates long term that he can finish games.
Same with RJ.
I like Jhart off the bench.
I like this win streak and ride this line up as long as it produces.
Next season will be here soon enough.
I don't know how we make the next jump.
since we love essentially everyone in the rotation at least some of the itme, it will be a difficult off season
i have a tough time identifying the superstar to come here at this point that i'd actually like -- Embiid but no idea how that would look
smaller bore move would be shooting like cam johnson

Embiid at 29 (this month) is no doubt a top 5 player at the top of his game.
His extension does not have the protections against back or knee issues his earlier contract has.
There is always a worry with some players that in trade for at the very top of prime years on a super max that can really destroy a team.
Westbrook play was one thing, his contract was another. John Wall. These are big numbers for players that talk more than perform.
Have not heard boo from John wall who earlier this season talking like he was done wrong. He broke down again.
Out of my hands and I lack a better idea so who am I to shit on it.
I doubt we trade For embiid and hold both brunson and Randle...........
He would come at a big price. one has to figure trade for big star needs time to rebuild around. Its why the whole DM to cavs thing is far from being able to grade.

I don't know the Knicks are going to find a new level by rearranging the deck chairs.
Get more out of what they have, maybe?
But I don't know that takes them to Bucks-level (for example).

Not the basis of a trade, the makings of a premise his value to the Pels might be a little higher.
That said they seemed pretty chummy on good terms after the game the other night.
Does that mean they'd both sleep with John Stamos and build bunk beds for the best night ever?
Who knows?
I think we have our stars.

Embiid's game will age better than Westbrook and Wall etc.
And though it would suck to lose someone like Mitchell (home grown plus seems like a great teammate) if there were a way to squeeze Embiid in, jebus we would be tough. Plus he can handle NYC
that said, odds have to be miniscule but with Harden potentially leaving who knows

Call it Barrett, Robinson 4 picks and 3 swaps for Embiid? You do that?
Mikal vs OG? Who do you pick?
