gradyandrew wrote:We should trade RJ immediately after him breaking out in the playoffs? Despite his 1-10 shooting in Game 6, he still averaged 20 per in the series on 38% 3 point shooting.
RJ showing promise to be a efficient 20 pg scorer and a good defender is too much to give up if true. So RJ earned another year unless we can trade him for a haul. He is a player who can play 2-4 who just got some valuable playoff experience. The type of player we would be offering multiple picks and players for if he was on another team. Have RJ go on a 3 week vacation and return to the practice facility and work on his shooting and handling to be improved for training camp. Have him and Hart work together all off season
Also if we can just get him for a second rounder or as low cost FA add Danilo Gallanari to the bench to replace Simms in case of injury to Mitch or Heart. Plus he can add shooting when needed. If he can be obtained cheaply
Don’t like the Gallo, idea - was moving like a tank 2 years ago - now 34 and missing entire year he will look like Mitch dragging himself up the floor

Plus I doubt the refs look the other way on his moving screens if he’s playing for us
Seems like Knicks biggest concern is to add an extra shot creator who can also shoot threes and isn’t getting run off the floor defensively. That player would ideally replace Toppin (with Barrett and hart playing backup 4 minutes) and provide extra shot creation when Brunson is off the floor. A quick look at guys who fill this void that aren’t superstars, I see a couple of names. Alec Burks is old reliable. He probably won’t be a free agent (team option) but we own 2 Detroit picks and can offer one or the other. Burks is a proven fit who shoots 40% from 3, can play multiple positions, and is ok defensively. When you think about non-Brunson minutes, he can provide value. Another option is free agent (and CAA client) shake Milton. He’s a decent shooter and scorer. Isn’t bad defensively. Got crunched minutes wise in Philly and I doubt would be resigned. He’s a MLE option. Either of these players helps in non-Brunson minutes and can play alongside him too as spot up shooters and a relief valve with shot creation.

Is Giannis coming with Lopez? That move won’t put the Knicks over the top. The Knicks have to improve substantially and look for a player that can make them better. A player who is young athletic and can shoot. Against the heat the Knicks got man handled in the rebounding department. Last I checked Lopez is a rebounding liability.
Knicks out rebounded the Heat by 30 in the series.....just saying. If you take a deeper dive into the series, the Knicks shot less than .300 from 3 and had 30+ more turnovers than the Heat. This resulted in ~40 less shots than the Heat. There's your series differential root cause.
A guy like Lopez may not win you a championship - but he would be a less expensive complimentary piece that improves the team.
I agree with the turnovers. And the shooting was poor from three. So how do you fix the turnover problem. Lopez can shoot threes. Last I looked Lopez also lost to the Heat. What I’m trying to say is Giannis is a great talent and we don’t have that type of player that can carry a sidekick like Lopez. Lopez was like the fourth option on the Bucks. The Knicks have three decent players, is that enough to get the Knicks over the top. If you aren’t playing for the championship or building for it. It won’t get you there. Because Randle hasn’t proven to be a big game player, RJ is still streaky and his shot from three isn’t good. Brunson is the only true bright spot on the Knicks. The Knicks have to make major moves to improve or they could stay the same and just make the playoffs. Keep the fan base happy with extra games in the season. I think the Knicks fan base is content with just playoffs.
The FO needs to think hard and figure out the future of Randle with the team. At this point his trade value is at an all time high, his 25/10 production will be hard to fill, ideally getting another all start type player in return is the way to go if they want to trade him.
I read a proposed trade swap between RJ and Poole. What are your thoughts on that?

Poole is fine, but then are we trading IQ for a wing ?

RJ for Poole is a downgrade to me. And he plays no defense. Also, I don’t see a point of trading Randle. I know people are low on him because of his playoffs, but he still keeps some pressure off of Brunson and the other players with the attention he brings from defenses. When it comes to taking the next step in the playoffs, replacing him doesn’t seem like a high priority. We need to add, not subtract. I guess Randle for KAT does make sense in many ways, but that’s really the only concept that makes sense, if you can replace his production like for like.
Not really sure what to think of poole, he essentially duplicated what Randle did for the knicks in the playoffs, they disappeared. I just think the knicks should change it abit, i still want the young knicks to grow together. I think the best thing the fO can to is to just add a boarderline all star keep the major parts together and if the knicks make the playoffs again and Randle starts to fade maybe the "new boarderline all star can make the next jump to all stardom and save the day! What can a package of Evan, DRose and 3 1st round picks can net the knicks?
Can that package, Evan, Drose, 3 1st round picks plus IQ and Obi get the knicks Mikal bridges? The knicks can sign Rokas to fill the role of IQ and Roby can play the 7-12 mins that obi usually gets.
RJ shot 40% from three his sophmore year here.
If we all about what a player has done before, its not out of the realm of possibilities.
This FO with Perry has succeeded because it did things like get randle and Brunson who proved to be better than expected and we have a formula of not paying stupid money to players. We have no one over 30mil a year!
Move to success fans raise expectations.
Lose 4 of 6 left a bad feeling. Fact is there is no RX bcause we are not broken.

When you watch him shoot, do you see fluid motion? Maybe its because he is lefty, but I never liked how he looks shooting the ball. I don't think he will ever be consistent. When I watch Grimes shoot, I am confident he will become a 40% 3 point shooter. He has a gorgeous release.

that is one part of things. RJ has become quite good at going to the rim from his season he shot 40% from 3pt.
Very different players. Grimes quick release is a thing of beauty. RJ’s is not unless its going in!
Both are super young.
Listening to an Athletic podcast this AM with a Piston reporter who was proposing trades centered around the Piston’s #5 pick.
One trade he proposed was built around RJ + future pick for #5 + Bogey + a shooter.
Looking at trade machine looks like RJ/Fournier/future #1 for Bogey/Burkes/#5 would work…..thoughts?
Knicks could potentially then move that #5 pick for RJ type replacement.

If Cam Whitmore is there, I would do it.

Agree - this is who I really would have targeted had we somehow obtained a top 8 pick! Might take a year or two - but his ceiling and potential are pretty high and other teammates would at least benefit from his stroke as he develops.
I would think Knicks would try to re-route the #5 for another playoff ready player - OG, LaVine, etc.

Yup. You better hope that your patience is contagious. He better perform well enough to be worth it in those 1 -2 years.

We are now trading first round picks to salary dump RJ for the 5th pick overall.
