Ugh and wow. Thanks for this Clean.

When first hearing about this I did not grasp how big this was. After reading this guy breakdown the full lawsuit files this is potentially a lot bigger than people think. This twitter thread is long but a good read to understand exactly wha happened. It was also so detailed tha I have no doubt they have proof. Dolan and Rose are so tight liped about everything they should be the last people you steal from.

Not for nothing but the Raptors should just trade us OG for Fournier straight up right now and end this suit. Holy Moly. They seem fucked

Unless Evan becomes the situational back up 4 this season. At 6'7" with a chunky frame he might be able to body up opposing big forwards just enough while being a huge mismatch for them on offense. Just saying if he is going to be here find a use for him. Heart, Evan, Hart, DDV, and IQ could be lethal for some stretches. Just saying... Thinking outside the box....

OKC just waived Usman Garuba. I’d be making that waiver claim into the Toppin traded player exception, no? Little known exception that they can do that. They end up with his 3.3mm salary, his 2024 option at 4.4mm and his RFA thereafter. Seems like a no brainer, no?

Not sure if they could use the Bi Annual to make that claim, also.

I don't think so. He is a 6'8 and center is probably his best position. I don't think he plays center with this coach. He also can't shoot which would make it very hard for him to play 4 with our nonshooting 5s. His biggest strength is being a switchable big and we don't run a switch-heavy scheme for bigs. If we wanted to develop a switchable 5 we should have started playing Sims regularly last year. I wouldn't be mad b/c it cost nothing and maybe he can turn into a player but I also think it would be pointless.

I remember Usman being hyped up a ton before that '21 draft.

Garuba has a small sample set, but he played short minutes in 75 games. 13 minutes a game or so. He took 42% of his shots from 0-3 feet (62% good). 20% from 3 to 10 feet (32% bad) and 33% of his shots from 3 (40% good). His per 36 translates to 8pts 11 rebs, 1.6 steals and 1.1 blocks.

He is 6'8 with a whopping 7'2 wingspan. That's a biometrician's dream at +6. 20 years old. Meaning, its possible he is still growing.

He's rough, uncut player that could use 12 minutes a game. And he is essentially free. You can say "no", but can you tell me our other options on the bench are better than this?

We all love Jericho Sims, but can you tell me Jericho has more upside than Usman Garuba?

Garuba being cut is a function of OKC's depth and not Garuba's roster-worthiness. I think the Knicks should use a waiver claim here.

BigDaddyG @ 8/22/2023 2:42 PM
Man... Hate to write him off, but it's hard to envision him coming back at even 75%.

I think the Knicks really need a big man who can hit shots from beyond 6 feet, preferably with a bit of three-ball ability too. We can ill afford to use a roster/rotation spot on yet another strictly at-the-basket specialist like Mitch, IHart or Jericho.

Both Garuba and TyTy Washington were released and both would be great pickups here to infuse some young talent to the end of the roster. Garuba is repped by Sam Rose.

For me, you pick up a prospect for what he can be down the line, not for how he could hypothetically contribute this next season. We are talking about the 14-15th guy on bench.

Garuba shoots some threes and makes them too.

I think who the player is right now has to matter too. Usman has tools. Does he have any game? Is he all sizzle and no steak? He also only scored about 3 points a game in Spain. He's never been a contributing rotation player on a high-level basketball team. I just feel like at some point projection crosses the line into fantasy. Occasionally a long-range project will turn into Giannis but more often than not they turn into Frank N. They have tools they just aren't close enough to being an NBA player on the offensive end and you are asking them to learn too much while traveling the country on a pro team. Tyty hasn't done anything on the NBA level either and theoretically might have a lower ceiling than Usman but when I watch that kid play I see a guy that has some immediately translatable skills. That said I am painting with very broad strokes. I haven't seen a lot of either and I've seen very little of Usman.

The fact that he's shot the ball a little and made some of them is definitely the most encouraging thing about him potentially growing into the player being projected. I wonder if he has any feel on offense
