If you think about it outside of maybe size/shot-blocking most any guy we could grab at this point Hart would be better all around fit and team fit —- might even have career year getting those extra mins at the 4.

Knicks doing small ball but at the 4 instead of 5 spot for bench rotation.

Barrett is more of a 4 than Hart.

RJ did look strong in those FIBA highlights. But, I'm more worried about the lack of height across the roster. Most teams that operate that kind of rotation have strong shooting across their roster.

Why you gotta hate on RJ so directly?

I mean if the shoe fits...

Agreed, but we really didn't have a choice.

His depth is critical here as I believe Knicks will eventually pull off a major trade and they will need him coming off the bench when guys like IQ and Grimes get dealt.

Odd way to say that the Knicks and Josh Hart got exactly what they wanted.

Knicks couldn't let him walk. Good player and they gave up a first to acquire him.

Knicks could use another lefty

Feel like Ian doesn't go out of bounds on making predictions that aren't very solid. Looks like IQ is on his way to an extension too, which is awesome.

YES... this notion that we somehow cant resign IQ is nuts. You HAVE to see how IQ's arc plays out. He put up 22/5/5 as a starter in 21 games (winning record). Look at Brunson's progression and IQ's. What if IQ is better than Brunson? Both are crazy hard workers with high BB IQ. For the record Brunson also had a TERRIBLE playoffs vs. the Clippers before lighting up Spida 2x

When they are all all-stars we can worry about max players and cap issues.

Alpha1971 @ 8/10/2023 9:43 AM
Yeah why can't we keep our guards and draft our own OG.

Because we need to punt and trade our pick for future protected firsts and second rounders that might convey 3-7 years down the line.

Feel like guys like IQ and Grimes are easy to see filling out at a high level soon. How far? Who knows.

As a fan, I'd be incredible happy to just ride with the guys that are on the roster with internal growth as a key focus.

Brunson has been a bigger revelation than I had expected and his role on the USA team hints towards something even better than we saw during the last playoffs.

Yeah I'm good with just rolling with this crew for another year but that's just me.

I agree, we have 3 or 4 guys in FIBA (if you count EF). But I can see a lot of guys on the current roster take a step forward, and if that happens, thats better than adding new players and hoping they fit in. The following guys I think will take a step forward.

Grimes
Brunson
Hart
RJ

Due to the knowledge and experience they will gain from FIBA. Plus you pickup another level of confidence, just to be around the top players and especially the coaches. I'm also expecting these players to step up.

Randle (with his low playoff performance)
Mitch (I'm sure he's feeling the pressure from iHart)
iHart (He's ready to show why he should be the starter)
IQ (Looking to show his value)
DDV (Similar to when Hart came over, DDV is looking to show out)

So yes, I believe this entire group (including Thibs) will step up a notch in general, which is great news for the team and fans.

I could not be happier for both Hart and the Knicks. I think we will be competitive and keep building. Great signing.

Brock and Leon with another banger!

nice so basically a 4/71m deal. that's a steal for Hart.

that 5th year at $22m for his age 32/33 season could have been a bit rough.

Thats great news if true. I dont see both Grimes and IQ staying beyond this season. Just a hunch with the glut at guard. I dont believe IQ wants to spend the next few years coming off the bench. Might end up being a sign and trade.

That’s a steal for the Knicks. Brunson and Hart are probably the likely longest tenured Knicks from this group when it’s all said and done. Brunson changed the culture and Hart took it a step further.

EwingPSD @ 8/11/2023 9:19 AM

I wouldn't call Hart a steal. I think it is closer to a strategic overpay. He's our guy. The FO identified him as a guy that fits better with us than other teams and whom we want to invest in. That's fine. The Pacers overpaid Brown and I think it is fine. The Rockets overpaid FVV and I think it's kind of stupid. In both cases, I think the FOs knew they were going high. I think we did too.

If I had Hart at 4 years 65mm in my estimates, he signed 4 years 68.5 and did it in a manner that allowed us to sign DDV. The last 22.5 is a team option and as such doesn’t really count. It’s a free option.

That’s not a strategic overpay by any means, they signed him at pretty much exact value in a manner that benefited the team.

Awesome signing.

why would IQ or Grimes go? Those guys will get resigned and the guy who goes will be RJ.

Short answer is $$ and role. Are you good with IQ holding out for 30-33M per? How would that affect future cap flexibility? Is IQ good in the 6th man role next season and maybe beyond? If he doesn't extend in the off season you have your answer.

We are deep at guard thanks to Brunson and now DDV. Right now we a bit thin at the 3.
Im on the fence with IQ. This is kind of fair. Not conclusive, its asks questions: http://www.ultimateknicks.com/outerlink....
