Knicks · M Bridges vs Q Grimes (page 1)

Alpha1971 @ 8/18/2023 10:45 PM
Yes, M Bridges from the Ners is a player we all dream of having. Talented and young and versatile who likely is out of our price range. Yet we have Q Grimes a young two way swingman. Can Grimes in the process of his development provide for us a approximation of what Bridges does for us while being the 4 or 5th option behind, JB, JR, RJ, IQ on offense

Last time I tried one of these threads, it didn't go over well.

We talking death match? That’s hardcore.

Your past one was ok and there is still time for us in the season to revisit. Your premise may have been revolutionary amd ahead of its time. Yet, Grimes is still a NBA starter and a established two way player with potential. Both of them are wings. If I recall you compared DDV with Jason Tatum or J Brown ? For me that was a leap my lower primate brain could not imagine what you an enlightened alien astronaut was getting at.

Grimes really needs to develop confidence and a mid-range game —- until those come he’s going to continue being who we’ve seen past few years which is a solid / inconsistent role player.

Mikal came in a year older but if you look at their first two seasons it's not a crazy comp. I think Grimes has potential to average 16-20ppg in this league. He's averaged 9.2ppg in 24.8mpg so far, Mikal first two seasons was at 8.7 in 28.8mpg despite being older and more seasoned.

Thats what I'm talking about, my friend.

Grimes has also been much higher volume from 3 and better % first two seasons. if you extrapolate over 36mpg Grimes at 13.3ppg vs Mikal 10.9ppg
technomaster @ 8/19/2023 9:20 PM
Maybe.

Grimes had a phenomenal shooting season last year, esp from 2pt% range: .641. With that said, he only took 2.7 2pt shots per game compared to 5.7 3pt shots. AND when he shot inside the arc, it was usually for a high percentage attempt. Kind of like Mitchell Robinson-type of shot chart.

Bridges surprised a lot of people after the trade to the Nets. I don't think anyone imagined him going off for 26.1ppg over his 27 regular season games + 23.5ppg in 4 playoff games as a Net. He looked like a legit 1st option. It's still a pretty small sample size.

Doing amazing things for a small sample size isn't uncommon. In a slightly smaller sample size, Quickley averaged 21.6ppg in his last 19 games of the season. Does that mean he's ready to be a 20ppg+ scorer in the league and be a top-2 option on a good team? Not sure. Unlike Bridges, though, Quickley did not perform nearly to that hot finish standard once the playoffs rolled around. Obi Toppin has put up numbers when Randle's been out. And of course there was Linsanity.

The hard thing to predict is whether players can product big numbers in the 1st half of the season when they're a top scoring option... and whether that translates to opportunities for teammates, and, more importantly, winning basketball. Forgetting about winning for a moment, a luxury Grimes has is that his workload and responsibility has grown gradually over time, much like Bridges. On the other hand, come contract time his value will be hard to read.

I’ll bite on this one. I know I hit Grady for his Giannis comparison, but Bridges to Grimes is more in line. I see Grimes as an undersized SG at the NBA that plays with tenacity, has a great first step and shoots well, although his career 3 point numbers haven’t really differentiated him yet.

Mikal Bridges has good size at SG at 6’6 with a 7 foot wingspan and plays elite perimeter defense. Given a chance to be the focus of the Nets offense, he grabbed the ball and ran with it to the tune of 26 points a game.

So, while it looks like Grimes gives up an inch of height, has a better 3 point percentage, Mikal has 5 inches more of wingspan, has been able to keep those numbers up when the focal point of the offense and was able to average 26 points a game for 27 games.

I have no intention of knocking Grimes in this comparison, I just think that bridges can guard 1-4 with his wingspan and Grimes is 1-3 if the 3 is a small 3.

Woah! I compared DDC to Brown, not Giannis. My comp was more bang for the buck, but poorly written and argued.

I think best thing we can do as an organization is be patient.

Play small ball and allow our guys to improve.

IQ, Grimes, RJ all have another ceiling to hit. Especially Grimes if Thibs can push the pace and get more transition threes it’s going to open up the court for him. He seems to be working and putting his head down. DD and IQ should also help open up things. If Thibs runs the right lineups we should be an elite 3 point shooting team.

Mikal is almost 4 years older with 400 NBA games under his belt, there's no question he's much better NOW. He's established, experienced and in his prime now.

Just saying Grimes' career trajectory right now is right there with Mikal if not better.

We'll see how Mikal does over a full season as the #1 also.

and all that being said if Grimes reaches even 75% of what Mikal has become we can possibly be a legit contender with this roster already.

Remember that time Grady compare Obi Toppin to Amare Stoudemire. Oh wait. That was me.

People have compared Grimes to Allen Houston. So if we have Allen Houston is that worse then not having Bridges ?
Alpha1971 @ 8/20/2023 5:46 PM
Those folks who want to trade Grimes or IQ. If Grimes is the next H2O, IQ the next Lou Williams why trade them when we can pair them with Brunson who is an all star pg. Sure if we can trade one for a all star wing but if not with this 3 guys and Randall we can use our picks to draft or trade for a wing, if RJ doesn't finally become more consistent. Front office is taking it patiently correctly

Grimes was sooo bad against Miami (most of the team was) aside from one lucky hustle play. I worry he is another one of those guys we overrated. He's a decent player but might not be a starter on a contender.

Small sample size under the bright lights and your counting him out ?

We did with Randle after his series vs. ATL. Flat out indictment of him and his son! Just kidding on the boy.
Randle in my book gets a pass because of his ankle.
Fans over exuberant? Bing Bong..........
