Knicks · Tweaking the SL (page 1)

I liked the lineup featuring

Brunson
DiVincenzo
Fournier
Randle
Mitch Rob

While small in the back court, this group had a nice balance. Divincenzo brings that same defensive grit as Grimes and will shoot and put the ball on the floor where as Grimes is mostly invisible. Fournier's shooting a high percentage from 3 would be a nice addition to the SL if he can keep up his aggressive and efficient play that we have seen in the preseason

I think Grimes could thrive and grow in the second unit. I liked the rotation of

IQ
Grimes
Barrett
Hart
iHart

While Barrett's ego would be bruised, I liked this rotation in the 2nd preseason game. Thibs is experimenting a little in the preseason and I liked the results

No to Fournier replacing RJ for me but with the thought of opening up Grimes a bit I wouldn't mind him playing more minutes with the bench unit and ball in his hands - that said the bench unit usually has IQ/RJ getting minutes and the ball in their hands.

I do think Donte might be a more reliable open shot shooter vs Grimes in starting unit and he may have some unrealized chemistry with Brunson as well.

Hard to take Grimes out of their though - Donte no slouch defensively but Grimes is physically imposing at the 2 defensively.

It's just preseason but Fournier deserves a little love for his stand out play. Averaging %50 from the field and %46 from 3pt and 3.5 rebounds.

Compared to RJ who is averaging %33 from the field and %23 from 3pt with 2 rebounds.

Fournier is averaging 13 ppg and RJ 17 ppg

If the season started today, I would have to give Evan the edge over RJ. Evan can spread the floor, has been more efficient with his shot selection and is rebounding like someone who is giving effort. Neither is a good defender but both are trying on defense

Nice pipe dream for fans, but Thibs not changing. EF is putting up great stats because he's angry, wants to be traded and Thibs wants him traded. So Thibs is giving EF minutes and the green light.

If everybody is healthy, EF will barely play, if he plays at all.
Grimes has earned the starting spot and he's familiar with Thibs system and the starting 5.

But later in the season, I can see DDV getting more PT and eventually closing out games.
Thibs likes consistency in his starting 5 and rotations. But during the game especially in the 4th, (outside of JB and Jules), Thibs will ride the hot hand.

Quentin Grimes averaging 20 min, 5 pts at %36 from the field and %25 from 3pt. I thought Grimes would be a better shooter. His form is pure. I also thought he would start to be more assertive about getting his shots. I also thought the same about Frank.

Of the 3 players, Evan is playing the best. Thibs is all about winning every game plain and simple. Evan is doing what he needs to do to earn a spot in a rotation. The numbers don't lie

We talking about preseason stats like they mean something?

Or are we talking about 2 games like they mean something?

2 games with a rotation of 15 guys?

The Knicks need shooting. Let me say it again for the back row. The Knicks need shooting. I don't mean shot takers, I mean shot makers. 50% from the field - 46% from 3pt. These facts are indisputable. 46% is 46%. Are you going to make an argument that 46% is not 46%?

In the last preseason game Thibs tried a rotation of Brunson, DiVincenzo, Fournier, Randle and Mitch. With our current team I thought this was a very balanced and efficient line up. I would like to see if Thibs goes back to it in one of the two remaining preseason games. That unit had a nice combination of ball movement, floor spacing, 3 point shooting, attacking the rim and defense, rebounding and hustle play. Divincenzo and Fournier might be a better fit in the SL than Barrett and Grimes.

The season would have to start very poorly for like the first 15-20 games forcing Thibs to feel to make this type of change. Basically like last season where Evan was the casualty. And if that was the case then a trade would also most likely need to also be made.

Well lets hope Barrett doesn't start the season shooting 23% from 3 and 33% from the field on volume shooting like has has the preseason.

Thibs needs to go old school and not play the yutes? I am skeptical this will happen.

It’s only preseason, but Fournier’s +/- is absurdly bad. Like worst on team bad. Just saying but he is in the NBA and had another player comfortable dribbling the ball between his legs. Pencils down.

If you really look, they are all pretty bad. He can’t get back with his man on defense. It doesn’t look like it’s him, but the defense is broken on pretty much any possession change that occurs without a play stoppage. It’s not his shooting, it’s his plus minus. Other teams outscore him when he is on the floor. Unfortunately, that’s his most defining stat and not his eFG, his 3pts Made it 3pt %. The team with him on the floor does not win. Makes him perfect for the Wizards and terrible for us.

As voiced in the offseason. The spacing limitations of the frontcourt with Mitch, Randle & RJ will always cap our ceiling. We are lucky Brunson is as good as he is. To be able to operate at the level he does, with the lack of outside shooting around him from his frontcourt teammates.

Luckily Embiid is on his way next offseason :)

I thought I saw signs of hope in the Minny game.

I was hopeful he could be effective in the second unit at SF. I just don't think he has the defensive chops to break even on a competitive team. His shooting skills are just overshadowed by his defensive liabilities. Its weird because he has the footwork at the 3 point line to create space, but doesn't have the footwork on defense to keep a ballhandler in front of him. He plays angles, but often gives up too much space on the break and gives away fast break points when he can keep up. He overreaches on steal attempts, so he generally has above average steals, but when he misses, the entire defense is collapsed because he ends up out of position on the steal attempt. Its all stuff that could be fixed with a return to fundamentals, but he is so caught up in thinking his treatment is unfair that he isn't seeing his shortcomings. Compare him to quickley and grimes who are doing the little things correctly (but aren't as good on offense - I said it) - but their overall value is tremendously higher, as shown by Quickley's Plus Minus versus Fournier. EF has to ask himself what IQ is doing that he isn't and the answer is pretty simple, he is staying in front of his man. Everything else stems from that.

On the subject of preseason stats don't matter.....Roby says hold my beer. His stats are obscene. New Obi is rolling

54.5% from the field 50% from 3pt. His rebounding is a little anemic at 2.5

The kid started his preseason for us in April. Just another good flying under the radar move by the FO. They got him the system early giving him a better opportunity to succeed.
