Shamet can do a little bit of what DVo does but who knows if he makes the team.

The more I analyze this trade the more I dislike it.

DVO was barely getting 20 mins off the bench this year. We have a bunch of guards who can fill that role and we get elite volume 3 point shooting from the C spot now. It’s not about replacing a role, this team is drastically different now ala Boston after Porzingis trade.

"He was coming off of a career year and helped the team win a ton of games when it was shorthanded. I don’t think any competitor would be thrilled with the idea of taking a reduced role in this situation.

This is just a guess, but I don’t think the issue described above played a significant role – if any at all - in the
Knicks’ decision to move DiVincenzo. They were against moving him for much of the offseason.

Maybe the deadline of training camp combined with Julius Randle’s looming contract situation and the length of Mitchell Robinson’s absence made the Knicks more motivated to complete the trade."

People forget it's a job. Players care about their professional career. He did a great job and was getting a demotion, that was going to hurt his future earnings. Not a great situation for him or his employer.

Knicks Current Roster:

GUARANTEED CONTRACTS:
1. Jalen Brunson
2. Karl-Anthony Towns
3. Mikal Bridges
4. OG Anunoby
5. Josh Hart
6. Mitchell Robinson
7. Deuce McBride
8. Precious Achiuwa
9. Jericho Sims
10. Cam Payne
11. Pacome Dadiet
12. Tyler Kolek
(3 open roster spots)

NON-GUARANTEED CONTRACTS:
Landry Shamet
Marcus Morris
Chuma Okeke

The Bobby Marks video breaks down the numbers. Because we are hard capped from the Bridges trade we can only sign one vet minimum contract. So that’s one of Morris or Shamet. The other spot will be filled by converting one of the 2 way contracts.

Between Shamet and Morris, you have to keep Shamet. Love Morris but he’s probably washed. This could be McCullar’s chance if he is healthy. Toppin maybe? Haven’t heard anything about any of Toppin’s progress. Hukporti? He has pro experience.

We cant add vet mins and stay under the apron correct?

DVD was excellent in the playoffs as was Hart. We got Mikal now, Deuce will play a lot of 2 guard this year and Kolek will be the backup pg

I want to say vet mins do not count against cap but not 100%

Deuce and Mikal.

It’s a vast upgrade cause of the defense.

Everyone likes to crap on OG cause of games played but DDV has averaged just about the same in his career. His last 2 years on GSW Knicks were stellar.

Knicks absolutely traded him at peak value.

Marks in the video above said hard capped. After the ‘likely’ trade is completed, we have enough room to sign one vet min and convert one 2 way and stay under the hard cap

As far as I know, we still have a 5M MLE don’t we? I forgot about that one

We need Bobby Marks on speed dial

I hate this.

But I was against the OG for RJ/IQ trade too so what the fuck do I know?

Today's a drinking day. Going to miss Randle and Donte...we JUST completed the gauntlet!!!

Hart shot 40% in the playoffs. Just saying.

Randle could wind up as a 1yr rental for them. It’s a good gamble since no playoff caliber team will have cap space. If Randle opts out, where does he go? He is extension eligible with Minny in March. Minny as a 2nd apron team can’t sign and trade Randle either. Minny can max him for his age 30-34 seasons.

Oddly Minny is the first time I’ve heard of that was willing to trade for Randle. So, his trade ability is negotiable.

Bro is so young he hasn’t gotten to the rhetorical Today level yet.

It is amazing how people are talking about KAT defensively like he’s Eddy Curry.

I know. It's silly. Towns has peaked out at 1.7bpg (15-16), 12.4rpg (18-19), 1.0spg (21-22). He's averaged 34mpg for his career. He's not a complete matador, and he's not making so many silly fouls that he takes himself out of the game.

He'll fail if you compare him apples to apples with Mitch on the defensive end. Mitch is the top 1% of defensive centers when he's healthy - and maybe we're spoiled because of that. Hartenstein was among the better ones too. But neither has had to carry the offensive load that KAT has.

I've been thinking through this - and the main downside for Towns is the size of his contract. To be fair, it feels like the Knicks management historically WON by getting their top players to take less than what they could potentially get on the open market. Happened with RJ, Randle, Brunson, and Hart.

RJ and Randle are no longer on the team - and probably screwed themselves a little bit financially in the name of the team.

EwingsGlass @ 9/28/2024 12:57 PM
Pretty sure there has to be another trade coming. Only have 12 rostered and only 900k of cap room.

Predictions on where Mitch ends up? NOP is the most obvious.

technomaster wrote:I like this trade. Sure, it hurts to lose Randle and DiVincenzo, but I think it reshapes our roster in mostly positive ways.

Towns: On offense, he does everything Hartenstein did - and better almost across the board. He does a great job as a high post distributor and allows us to continue that fluid style of play. He's also a legit 3pt shooter (39.8% for his career!) and give us a 3pt shooting center for the first time in Knicks history.

On defense, while he's not an elite shot blocking threat, he's a 7 footer and gives us a LOT more length than Randle would as a fill-in center. And his team tends to play better with him on the floor. His +/- was a whopping +321 last season, with a PER of 23.8. Wow.

So now some rationalizations:
* We badly needed a proven starting center. Mitch won't be in true game shape until after the all star break, and recent whispers said that Randle wasn't going to be ready for the start of the season, so we were getting into risky territory. Coupled with the fact that both of those players were unavailable for much of the 2nd of the season and playoffs with their annual late season injuries, it's quite frankly good business to plug in this hole on an otherwise championship-quality roster
* We needed to balance the logjam at swingman. The Bridges trade, while quite excellent, set us up with a messy log jam of swingman-sized talent, with Hart and DiVincenzo likely playing reserve minutes in spite of their starter-quality talent. They certain proved their capabilities during the playoffs, showing off what they could do when given 40mpg! Then there's the emerging McBride and highly touted rookie Kolek, both of whom looked slated for borderline garbage time/change of pace roles. DiVincenzo opens up 20-25 mins of playing time. Let's just say that we had too much of a luxury of talent off the bench, and we've traded that for a starter.
* When healthy, we'll be a match up nightmare - With KAT as our starter, I anticipate a healthy starting lineup including KAT/Hart/OG/Bridges/Brunson, and Mitch moving to the bench. This gives us a mix of shooters, defenders, fundamental ball movers, cutters, and passers in our best lineup. We also have the option to play 2 7 footers at the same time.

+100 good stuff and this reminds me I need to get on that And-1 thingy

The thing I’m missing is: we have three open spots now. If we can only sign one vet min and convert one 2-way, then the only way to fill the other spot is by trade or do we have some other exception to use?

We can call that lineup the Krispey Kreme. Sweet and enjoyable on the outside with nothing in the middle.
