Knicks · Knicks traded for Towns (finally official 10/1) (page 20)
VDesai@ 9/29/2024 12:21 PM
KAT was 12 rpg and 1.5 bpg in the first few years of his career playing more at center. Lets see if he can recapture that. His shot blocking role was limited playing next to Rudy

Shamet is about the same age, also a bit of a journey man, 9ppg 38% from 3 on the same type of volume as DDV.
This FO has done a great job finding great value, maybe Shamet is that next guy.
Because if you take DDV out of this, KAT is just flat out better at everything than Randle. Better scorer, better shooter, better passer, better shotblocker, much better playoff performer. And more importantly, a much better FIT with his spacing and ability to play the C position as well.
+1000
Yeah shamet fits perfect. Even though DEUCE will get DDV mins. Shamet is added shooting insurance and we can never have enough floor spacers. Very underrated pickup by Leon. I like his length as well. Love DDV but him and DEUCE are similar in size. Shamet looks like a taller catch and shoot player who Thibs can sit for 3 games, then play 15-20 mins the next 3 games. And he’s not going to complain yet give you similar floor spacing ability. Upset in losing DDV but happy to give DEUCE those mins with shamet waiting for DEUCE to have a bad shooting week and a Josh hart injury / bad play. I worry about Josh not shooting well in that starting lineup sometimes, but surrounded by 4 capable shooters nullifies that worry. JB, Mikal, OG, KAT
The more I think about this trade the more I’m liking it.

TWolves waived Randle. Chasson Randle. There can only be 1.

Hold on, yes, I loved Randle and Donte. That three against the Sixers runs rent-free in my mind. I wish them luck in their new situation.
But man! MAN! Remember many seasons ago when we were hoping for a star Point Guard and we finally got our star in Brunson? And his connection to the Knicks was clear since the beginning as a young NY fan?
What about a stretch 5 to truly compete in this era, a very talented and legit 7-footer who has played at his best as a Center and has the shot to rival guards! And the guy was a Knicks fan as a kid as well?! And his reasons to appreciate the franchise even beyond his fan hood are solid. He must be conflicted because he really seems to love Min and who wouldn’t after 9 years, but he is indeed coming home. He now has a chance to get his game to a new level while playing for his childhood team?
I’m very excited about this! Yes, people have questions and I’m glad there are because that means there is potential for better days from him. Just like it was with Brunson, so many doubting him and calling him a bench player and nothing more.
This is such a cool team to represent New York! I’m very excited about what this all could lead to!

Remember when FA’s wouldn’t sign here….they only used us to drive up their asking price with other teams?
Remember when other teams wouldn’t trade with us unless they were fleecing us in trades for past their prime stars on the decline?
Remember when our FO was a laughing stock….our team a punch line?
Me either. We’re back bitches!!! 3rd best odds to win the chip. Sandwiched between our two all stars are very talented high IQ role players. And this in a new CBA designed to make sure teams operating over the tax have flawed rosters. We need to erect a statue of Bock Aller in the lobby of MSG.

They said the same thing about iHart before he came here. And Thibs turned him into a run protector. I’m not worried about Kats defense. But other team will have nightmares guarding JB now. The RIM lanes will be WIDE OPEN. JB is cooking this year.
Thibs already had 2.5 years to work with KAT. Result lead to one of the worse defensive teams in the league.

VDesai wrote:I think the emotional gut punch of this is the toughest. Donte stepped up in a way no one thought he could, and he hit one of the biggest shots in my Knicks fan lifetime. He was fearless and the type of player NY loves.
Randle straight up saved the franchise. The guy came here and exceeded expectations and made us a credible teams. Lot of emotional ups and downs from him and for the the fans, but without him we are not here.
From an intellectual standpoint it all makes sense. Its better spacing. Its better size. Randle extension was gonna be tough. It does right by DDV and gives him a better opportunity on his next contract.
Is KAT ready for NYC? Will he play defense? Only one way to find out. When we added Bridges, I thought we would keep Hartenstein and might trade Randle and Mitch for OG, but OKC gave him ridiculous money. Now Mitch stays and its a still a crucial role for him to play, but perhaps more well equipped.
Deuce slots in for DDV bench shooting. Rugged on defense.
We never will realize the dream of the January Knicks or the Nova Knicks and thats sad.
But these are the Jalen Knicks. 3 strong wings, a stretch 5 with unlimited offensive talent and maybe the one guy in the world with mental fortitude and mentality to bring a title to this City.
this is a great take. I do think KAT will be in a great position to succeed here.
Knicks are a legit contender. Really the only problem is w/ OG and Towns we have $100mm in our cap tied to guys who miss a ton of games.
I really trust our ability to find guys. Big year for McBride getting 30 minutes off the bench for example.
Jules/Donte is a gut punch. Really hurts... it's the what could have been. I already had DD plugged in as the spot starter when OG misses 30 games
We have really high ceiling talent and THE finisher. I think Thibs. I think rather than change KAT we see him taking 7-8 threes a game and doing KAT things at full KAT speed. IF that means OG is constantly cleaning this guy's mess up oh well you got the bag.
I think Randle did NOT want to take a pay cut and with 3/4 all stars wanted his last contract to be a max deal. I suspect much of this was roster construction and absence of stretch 5s

I think people overstate his “bad” on defense. I love this guy’s takes on tape. I don’t expect him to be Tyson Chandler good at defense. But he can hold his own.
I absolutely love this video take, including the human sound affects (boosh…boosh). I forgot how agile Kat is on his feet guarding pick and rolls. Looks like we have him at the perfect time in his career at 28 yrs old. Seems like his defensive issues was not ability but effort. And in this series under the bright lights of the playoffs against the champs while guarding an MVP caliber player, (on an island) Kat stepped up. Now image what he looks like under a defensive genius name Thibs. I’m not worried. Health is my ONLY concern at this point.
this is what has Minn fans so upset. KAT WAS a terrible defender for a very long time. Thoughts were he was getting better finally and gets traded

This guy is schizophrenic. Showers people with praise and the treats them like the anti-christ later. That said, these clips only confirm what I've stated. KAT is probably better defensively at the 4. He doesn't do drop coverage well and he doesn't really protect the rim well anymore. The Gobert thing doesn't really pass the smell test. In theory, Gobert would have allowed KAT more weak side block opportunities. He couldn't even get a block per game.

The issue I have with the trade is that KAT isn't a center, IMHO. If the trade is Randle/Divo for a legit stretch "5", I can get behind the vision. Randle/Divo for another 4 who isnt substantially better seems like a lateral move, at best.

Yeah, wonder why the Wolves mortgaged their future for Rudy Gobert since they already had their "center" on the roster.

Maybe it was easier for them to find a center than a PF. Who was the PF the year before Gobert came?

Historical data suggests that KAT couldn't handle his defensive responsibilities at the center position. They had Naz Reid and Jaden McDaniels, who they decided to keep, on the roster prior to Gobert.

If cost wasn't an issue, Minny doesn't make this trade.

Would you consider Jokic a good defender? If not, then I guess it would be impossible for Denver to win a chip with him playing center or to make deep playoff runs. I really don’t get the argument. Towns does a lot of things at an elite level but that’s not good enough for you. Maybe you just really wanted to keep the status quo with Randle and Divo. Towns is a VERY good basketball player. Hating on him because maybe he’s not a plus defender is illogical. There’s a video on this thread of Towns bombing 3’s, then further in it details how he gets to the basket. There is so much to like there. It’s such a major improvement over putting your head down and dribbling into 3 guys guarding the basket (bully ball). Our floor spacing is going to give teams nightmares. No more 5-10 minute stretches where we can’t score or beat a zone. Our team got better. We upgraded talent. It’s all good. DDV can be replaced. His replacement might even already be on the team. What we really need is a healthy Mitch which isn’t Towns’s fault
GustavBahler@ 9/29/2024 3:20 PM
I would be satisfied if KAT plays consistent, respectable D. Instead of going from both extremes, I think we’ll be in good shape.
