Just dropping a thought in at this moment. I was absolutely a fan of Barrett and Quickly, but that trade for OG may go down as one of the greatest trades in Knick's history. Brunson's ascension (and his and Hart's incredible press conference performances) has drawn most of the media attention (deservedly) but OG is more quietly just as important to this team in so many ways. It's amazing that he almost impossibly can get overlooked. Well, not so much during that mother-of-all-dunks in OT last night.
I see you, OG.
I just cannot overstate how big winning game 1 in Boston is from a mental standpoint. Constant talk, from everywhere, on Knicks record vs. top teams. Even that final regular season game where it looked like the Knicks would finally talk, had that slip away. Definitely felt like we were heading into a match in the wrong weight class.
C's still have to be favorites here, but getting that monkey off our backs this early in the series is huge.

In an alternate universe, our baby Knicks are making a push for that first round upset.

Yes I agree, he's a special player. Tips the scales to contention. When he's healthy and right his impact is tremendous. Just as Brunson can take over and score on 4-5 possessions, we have seen OG lock in and take over and come up with defensive stops/stls on 4-5 possessions in a row.
I am very happy that he's not afraid to let it fly from 3. He has been putting it up confidently and that makes a huge difference in our ability to compete.
I'll say this again, I'm so happy for those younger fans who are now experiencing these type of moments for the first time! We all forget at times just how bad we were for the better part of two decades! And it's these type of games and moments that you will always remember as a fan!
I am so proud of these guys! Nobody has given us a chance in this series and I get it. And I think most fans thought this game was over when we got down 20. Celtics were 58-0 in games when they led by 16 or more and we only had like a 2.5% chance of winning this game at that point. But these guys battled and pulled off one of the biggest comeback wins in NYK history! Not even sure who get's the game ball cause there were so many guys who stepped up!
But I'm going to give it to Mikal! Didn't shoot it well all game but made one of the biggest shots of the game with that corner 3 in OT and had two insane clutch steals including Zioning Brown and not even allowing him to get a shot off! Say what you want about his style of play and how many picks we gave up for him but Mikal has really stepped up the last two games! We don't beat the Pistons in game six without him and don't win last night either. So happy for him and proud for stepping up!!
I couldn't believe JB missed that bunny in regulation! Great play designed by Thibs! Captain Clutch was wide open and he makes that 99/100 times!! But he was still Captain Clutch and those three threes he made in a row were huge! Loved Kevin Harlan calling him a machine! OG was huge all game too! Monster dunk in OT off that Mikal steal! And Hart was a warrior as always! That sequence where he got those 2 offensive rebounds that ended up with a Brunson three summarized what Hart is all about. So proud of Deuce! Bounced back and gave us exactly what we needed off the bench after his horrendous series against Detroit!
Hate to pick on a guy after that huge win but KAT needs to do better. That 3rd quarter was embarrassing. I get the zebras show him no respect or love (that 3rd he got was BS! Tatum jumped into him!) but the great ones figure it out despite that and KAT needs to do that. But he did have that huge putback in OT. And his one on one defense on Tatum and Brown was good. And not sure what we can do about Mitch. We need his defensive presence and help on the glass but he's becoming almost unplayable if he cannot hit at least 50-60% from the line. 3/10 is just not good enough. Precious is not that much better either so we might just need to live with it and hope KAT stays out of foul trouble.
Got to give Thibs his props too! A win is a win! Celtics shot poorly and a lot of those were good looks they normally knock down but at the same time I thought we were good defending some of those threes! We definitely need to fix the rebounding cause 19 offensive is way too much. And cannot leave 14 points on the board by missing them at the line. Can't even blame it all on Mitch cause the rest of the team was 14/21.
It's one win and it's going to be a long series if we have anything to say about it but it was an epic win! We did what we had to do! Steal one of the first two on the road! So proud of this team!!!

The answer is both. Achiuwa isn’t helpful and Mitch is unplayable in the playoffs with the fouling. Knicks need to address the backup big this summer. We just need a Paul Reed type.
We made that big comeback with Mitch at center. Mitch pressured Tatum on that missed 3 late in the game. And defended the inbound pass in crunch time. F the missed free throws, Mitch played a role in this win with defense and rebounding. We dont play him we lose.
3-10 free throws but +13 for the game. Maybe start Robinson and bring Hart off the bench? If he starts quarters, Celtics have to foul 5 times before he goes to the line.
Mitch needs to play. In addition to his rebounding, shot blocking and rebounding he as a perimeter defender gets in passing lanes and changes shots. Celts had a lot of trouble in-bounding at the end of regulation and OT because of Mitch.
Just make 50% of your FTs
Just like Thibs said postgame there is a reason they are fouling him to try and make him unplayable. They don’t want him on the court. If they did they wouldn’t foul him like that.
Not sure if I’ve ever thought of it that way
This is exactly what I was thinking. Mitch just stopped them from getting to the paint. Thibs needs to coach around this. They will not foul him if they are not on the penalty. Once Celtics are on penalty and they start hack-a-shaq then take him out. Bring him back on the 2 min mark. I think Precious is a bad matchup vs the Celts. He plays better against young, long, athletic players like the Cavs, Indy and Detroit. Maybe cross your fingers and give Huktuah some burn. Can't play any worse than Precious.
Precious literally jumped out of the way of a defender on one play
That Sid, I do think he can contribute. He needs to bp out of it
VDesai wrote:Precious is probably unplayable right now. He has lost whatever discipline he had and is just a disaster any time he gets near the ball. The Celtics destroyed him during the regular season and will make sure the ball gets in hands on offense - its almost the equivalent of Hack a Mitch as a strategy.
I still believe precious can contribute. He needs to lock in on D and rebounding.
Anyone else hates the way the Celtics play chucking so many threes? THAT IS NOT BASKETBALL!

Ironic since you can sort of blame Rick Pitino for starting all that.

I think it goes back earlier to Westphal (sp?) as coach in Denver
edit: not remembering coaches correctly. Clearly wasn't Westphal I'm trying to recall. but there was a Denver coach waaaay back who was pure run and gun ahead of their time (but they stunk)
edit again: Paul Westhead

I think D'Antoni started it with the Suns.

The 3's are ugly, but ultimately its good math...
For all the talk about "Unethical" basketball, the Pistons and the Celtics are exploiting the "Hack a Mitch," which is not against the rules, but I think the definition of not following "ethics." To me the league can just address this by stating that a true intentional, off ball foul should result in the team that gets fouled being able to choose its shooter. You can be more punitive like award back possession, but its rather than create unintentional consequences of something like that being in effecc, the team being able to choose its shooter would prevent it.

or a flagrant? not a basketball play
Mitch hits 50+% issue becomes moot

I like that better than the 1 shot + ball idea. First thought immediately went to injured players, foul to get them off the court.
Thibs deserves credit for his switch strategy and even more credit for sticking with it when it seemed like it clearly backfired putting everyone in foul trouble and falling behind 20. It honestly seems like Thibs just plays drop coverage all year and saves his strategic defenses for the playoffs.

Exactly a flagrant or something that also awards possession is too punitive for situations where a team may need to deploy something like this.
This is the definition of a great player, when a foul call is named after you. Big ups to Shaq.
Hart needs to run the offense or be a major player in the offense. Like setting picks for JB was huge and will continue. This is what happens when you put a center on Hart.
This team is coming together right before our eyes, and Mikal / OG is leading the way.
Deuce found his shot, so I love that and knicks need him.

Nope...and not D'Antoni either. Pitino was 1988-89 which was before both those guys. I paid very close attention to what he had Trent Tucker and Johnny Newman doing. It really was the start of the shift to more three-point shots.
Here are some numbers:
85/86 season - DAL led the league with 1.7 made on 5.4 attempts per game.
86/87 season - DAL again with 2.8 on 8.0.
87/88 season - BOS led the league with 3.3 on 8.6 attempts per game. I think that was the most to that point.
88/89 season - NYK led the league with 4.7 on 14.0 attempts. Next closest was SAC with 3.7 on 10.0. The league noticed.
89/90 season - CLE and LAL both with over 10 attempts per game. The following year, four teams had over 10 attempts (ironically, the Knicks fell back to the middle)
It only went up from there. Pitino was really the first coach who claimed that he felt that good shooters would score more points at 1.5x their 3P% than 1.0x their 2P%. Turned out to not be true for the Knicks at that time (again, Newman and Tucker) but it was a tipping point in the number of shots teams took. Last season, no team took less than 30 3PA per game.
Also, worth noting, that SO FAR this year, Thibs heavy minutes approach is actually bearing some fruit. Knicks were one of the healthiest teams all year and have been dynamite deep in 4th quarters in the playoffs. I thought Celtics looked gassed last night in OT and Knicks had the fresh legs.

Here's the thing.. OG outplayed Tatum. Like that's it. Thibs rode Bridges all game and showed us all why. I thought a big xfactor for us was seeing how Bridges and KAT both seemed to have another gear and they showed that again tonight. Just making physical plays and impacting the game.Just a great team win. Thought we were jinxed when Brunson's would be game winner rolled out. Nope. The Celtics did miss a lot of shots but they are also shit. Long contested jumpers and our guys were all cheating out. We had great scrambles and even when they moved it for some layups it was only after they had to work.
