Management must have convinced him since the padres have expressed interest in some of the yanks prospects. No Cano in this deal though.

good luck to them.
Bonn1997 @ 11/4/2008 5:59 PM
The Yankees better not screw up on chances to get Johan, CC, and Peavy all within a 12 month period. Sorry but if that happens they deserve the third or fourth place finish they'd be likely to get again next year.

Just came on here to post the same thing, but you beat me to it bro. LOL!
That's good news for us - I'd say there's a legit chance of us doing something with the Padres now. Wish I knew exactly what prospects Towers is interested in. Guess we'll find out soon enough (be prepared to start hearing A-Jax, Betances and Montero, I can tell you that right now - and that's gonna make it tough). Going out on a limb right now and saying with this news of Peavy adding the Yanks to the list today, I'd say it's probably better than 50/50 that we wind up landing this guy - gut feeling.
IMO, I think we absolutely need FAs Tex, and CC or Burnett AND a trade to go down for Peavy. Also, I still don't see the obvious upgrade in RF if they let Bobby Abreu walk, so I'd bring him back too.
1) Sign Tex. He then either hits 3rd or 5th behind A-Rod.
2) Sign Sabathia or if he's not available, grab Burnett.
3) Trade for Peavy w/o giving up A-Jax, Betances or Jesus Montero.
4) Re-sign Abreu, even if it's for a one year deal.
5) Retain both lefty relievers Coke and Marte. I want both back. Maybe even add this righty flamethrower Juan Cruz if the money makes sense.
6) Look to trade Johnny Damon for the best value possible - an up and coming power bat at the A or AA level or a minor league position player or 2 with some promise would be fine with me.
7) Get enough offense in place where we can live with giving Gardner the job in CF. Bat him 9th, with the option of leading him off eventually if he shows enough improvement.

Giambi and Pavano are off to free agency. FINALLY!!!
Looks like A-Rod stays and Manny is on the way. Okay, now we need to very good starting pitchers on this team.

Finest.. man I gotta disagree with you on a couple points.
I know I'm in the minority on this one but I want nothing to do with Mark T. I know you can throw all kinds of stats at me with T, but I just get a feeling that there's something missing with him... always have. I don't know what it is, but I just get that feeling. I know we have a hole at 1st but I really don't think he's the way to go.
I'm not that in love with Burnett, he's an injury waiting to happen and I don't want to give him the money he wants.
CC is a great regular season pitcher, but so far in his career has been bombed in the playoffs. Between that, his weight and the wear on his arm this year, I'm a bit worried about the 180mill the Yankees will throw at him.
******************************************************************
I have heard that the Yankees are targeting Orlando Hudson, which I think is a terrific move, he's a a professional hitter and he's a fantastic fielder. I've heard the Yankees plan on playing him at second (if they deal Cano) or CF (if they cant), the mere fact that the Yankees are looking at him makes you think they are serious about dealing Cano.
I'm all aboard with acquiring Peavy, I know he has a bad postseason history, but I think his stuff is so nasty that he'll come around with that, especially with the run support he'll get from the Yanks. I'll give up whatever it takes to get him.
4949 @ 11/4/2008 10:40 PM
Peavy and Manny. Those should be out target.
And '180 million'??? FORGET IT!

You scared the hell out of me there for a second.

4) Re-sign Abreu, even if it's for a one year deal.
Bobby's not gonna sign on for a 1 year deal... he knows this is his final shot at a decent payday, he'll want at least a 3-4 year contract minimum if u ask me.
as for Tex, i would love to sign him but for $28 mil per over 10 he's just not worth it IMO... i'd rather go w/a stopgap solution at 1B & use that money to upgrade the pitching then invest that type of coin into a 1B, as great a player as Tex is.
i would also look to trade Damon if i can but not sure how much u could get for him at this stage in his career... he still has a good bat but his range in the OF has gone down noticeably & we all know he's got a noodle arm & is no longer a viable option for CF.
as for Peavy, i think it's fair to assume that at the very least, Hughes, Jackson & another top prospect of ours will be involved in any deals w/the Pads.
Finestrg @ 11/5/2008 12:39 AM
Well, you're probably right about Abreu taking a one year deal - when the window starts to close, most guys do decide to go for the best deal they can get their hands on. I mean look what Manny just said: "Gas isn't cheap and neither I'm I," or something like that. However, if the Yankees make the commitment and add some big-time pitching and really improve the team, along with the excitement of playing in a brand new stadium - maybe Abreu decides to come back for a team-friendly deal - maybe he decides to come back and piece it together year-to-year like Pettitte's been doing. Plus, and correct me if I'm wrong here, if both sides agree to take it to arbitration, which is still a possibility from what I understand, we still could wind up bringing him back for 1 year around $16 million no? He's not getting any younger so a shot to win it all with a talented club he's been comfortable with a few years in a row now might go a long way with him (Philly won it all and that's gotta be going through his mind having played there for years). Just giving the flip side of the coin here. Not sure where Bobby's mindset is on this right now, although I remember him saying he'd like to be back. I think it's the Yankees that wind up passing and I gotta tell ya, that's a mistake IMHO. The obvious upgrade just isn't there. Remember you're trying to replace a .290-.300 hitter who's patient and takes a fair share of walks, scores 100, drives in 100, steals 20+ bases is a decent fielder (the wall, I know) and has a legit RF's arm. How do you do that? Move Nady to RF opening up LF for Matsui? Perhaps, only thing is I'm just not convinced Matsui's a regular 600+ AB player anymore. Plus, what if Nady regresses some and only winds up giving you .280, 15 HRs, 75 RBI. Nice numbers for a LFer but for my RFer, I'd want a little more. Damon, like Matsui, is another guy who may not be a regular full-time anymore (I'd love to just deal Damon coming off the good year offensively and just turn the page on him already - if he could net us a position prospect or two with some power potential, something we really don't have on the farm right now save for Montero, that'd be great). Who else? Definitely can't replace him with Melky. Tabata's gone, A-Jax isn't ready. Safe to say the upgrade's not there right now from within.... You obviously replace the production and then some with Manny but ask youself, do you really want this friggin' yo-yo? The guy's a tremendous hitter but come on he's a complete sideshow, a real clubhouse cancer. I mean the guy's in a great situation in Boston, the team's winning, he's getting payed well, he's got a majority of Red Sox Nation behind him....and he goes and ruins it. I mean who wrecks a great situation like that??? Guy's just a douchebag. I've built up such a hatred for the guy that in my mind he's still a Red Sox and I want nothing to do with the Red Sox and their castoffs (for the record I was against both Clemens and Damon). Just have to see what goes on with Bobby, but if the situation's right, I'd bring him back. He could still help the cause here...
I can see some of your points fellas but keep in mind we need both pitching and offense. Regarding pitching upgrades, I think you gotta deal with what's in front of you out on the table. Sure there's risks with CC and Burnett but right now that's what's available to us. That and a possible trade for Peavy, a guy that's forcing his way outta San Diego. If there were other options as good you consider them, only thing is, there's no pitching option nearly as good as CC, Burnett and Peavy out there. I think we need two of these guys. Speaking of Peavy, NYK mentioned he should be alright here because our offense should score him some runs. That's only the case if we beef it up considerably. Our offense as currently constructed isn't all that impressive. Just curious how we hold up offensively when nobody wants Mark Tex., nobody wants Abreu back, Giambi's gone, and it might take Cano as part of the deal to get Peavy here... See where I'm going, where's the offense coming from? Orlando Hudson? Nice little player but hardly an offensive dynamo. I agree with Cash - pitching's the top priority but make no mistake, this offense needs work also. Mark Tex. is the best option. It starts with him IMO. $28 mil a year over 10 years is rediculous but if that's what it takes... If that's what Anaheim's prepared to pay or close to it, then so should we... I say we go after him aggressively by coming close with a good offer right away - don't even give LAA a chance to react here. Come quick, hard and strong. Maybe $20-25 mil. a year for 8 years with the opportunity to come to the Yanks and the new ballpark and be back on the east coast where both he and his wife are from. Maybe that'll get it done. Bottom line, yeah that type of money's rediculous, but the Yanks have let the fans know that they're prepared to spend money to make the situation better. As a fan I've got no problem with that. The Yanks always have been willing to pump money back into their product and as a longtime fan I've come to appreciate that. Mark Tex. is the perfect upgrade for our offense. We wouldn't have to worry about 1B for a long, long time. This guy's arguably the best first baseman in the sport. If we had better options I can see going in a different direction but we don't - Posada & Matsui serve the team better in there natural positions and neither are the offensive players Mark Tex. is at this point. Tex. would be the perfect 3 hitter or serve as excellent protection for A-Rod in the lineup hitting behind him. A-Rod doesn't have the type of protection he really needs right now. This kid Miranda's got a little pop but he doesn't appear to be the full-time answer. Can't neglect upgrading the offense also, all I'm saying.

i have my doubts to whether the Yanks will be willing to pay the fare to bring Mark T to the Bronx... 10 years at over $250 mil is a helluva investment for anyone... i highly doubt Boras will accept anything less than $22-25 mil per over 8, & after what they went through w/Giambi's monster contract & w/Arod already on the hook for a ton of cash w/guys like Jeter & Wang coming due for big time extensions of their own, i dunno if they wanna tie up that type of cash on any 1 player right now unless we're talking about a premier pitcher.

These asking prices are completely rediculous. It's not like they'er A-Rod, but even A-Rod isn't worth what he's getting right now. I say simply match anyone's offer, unless it's in that astronomical range. Forget it, forget it.
TMS @ 11/5/2008 2:51 AM
personally i'm getting the feeling we're coming out of this offseason w/CC & Derek Lowe, & likely a trade, hopefully for someone like Zack Greinke... & if they can't get that trade done, they're gonna offer Mussina a 3 year deal to return, an offer he likely won't be able to refuse at this stage in his career... just how i see things playing out, not necessarily how i'd like them to play out.
i dunno how realistic the Peavy talks are at this point, the stories say he's leaning much more towards staying in the NL & going to a team like ATL or STL.
i don't see Bobby Abreu coming back, & i don't think the Yanks will play Boras' game to sign Mark T to those ridiculous dollars, especially after that fiasco that went down last year w/ARod's contract situation... just the feeling i get... i think we're gonna sign up a stopgap 1B solution & Damon will likely be starting at CF again next year unfortunately... there just aren't that many trade options out there for him at this point... maybe they take a flyer on Rocco Baldelli but i honestly don't think that's very likely.
the 1 wildcard in this whole offseason is what they plan to do w/Cano... if they're truly shopping him then things can change dramatically.

I have no problem standing pat this year, even it means another year without the playoffs next year. I just don't really like many of the options out there for us, they all have some serious question marks about them, which for me is enough to stay away. Let's make some smart trades this offseason and see where it takes us for next year. If we don't make the playoffs, then we don't, but I honestly think that's better than signing half the league and hoping they come together.
mattshaw78 @ 11/5/2008 12:36 PM
I agree with that. We did this massive signing of free agents in the past. Giambi, Mussina, etc. Most of them with no rings to show in their career. We got away from the 1996 Yankees where small ball wins games. And after the year 2000 you see teams following the same blue print as the 1996 yankees like the Diamondbacks and the Angels. We falling too in love with the long ball instead of the OBP.
Finestrg @ 11/5/2008 3:54 PM
I see where you guys are coming from here - most of you are saying basically just throwing money at FAs isn't necessarily the answer - and I agree to a certain extent. Listen, we've gotten burned here before so that argument's definitely a valid one. But to me if we had the options in house or on the farm to fix some of these problems I'd feel more comfortable passing on some of the talent-for-hire out there. Problem is we don't have that. Where's our replacement for Bobby Abreu on the farm? Where's our next first baseman? Our next second baseman if we deal Cano? And a little further down the road, where's our replacement for Jeter in a few seasons? Even our pitching - Joba's obviously the real deal regardless of how we eventually wind up using him but where's our replacements for Mussina and Pettitte - Hughes and Kennedy aren't ready for that, not yet anyway. See what I'm saying - where's our Kevin Youkilis, Dustin Pedroia and Jon Lester??
Hey to our credit, I understand that we've developed plenty of talent up to this point that's still here and still serving us well - Jeter, Posada, Mariano, Cano, Wang, Chamberlain - and sometimes both the Yankee hater and Yankee fan forgets that. It's just that the next wave of young impact players, especially everyday position players, from within the organization just isn't there right now. Lately we've focused so much on collecting young arms in the minors (which isn't a bad idea btw - you can never stockpile enough pitching - it would just be nice to start seeing a little return on some of these young pitchers beside Joba already) but I think it's come at the expense of drafting offensive position players/guys with power. We might have one legit power guy in Jesus Montero but we're at least 2 or 3 years away from finding out. Our top minor league teams are basically devoid of legit major league positon talent and that concerns me. My point is this: if we went out and got the pitching we need but neglect to improve the offense, we're no better as a team than we are right now at this moment. I mean what would the point be of going out and throwing millions at a CC Sabathia, AJ Burnett and/or making a blockbuster trade for a Jake Peavy if we're not also prepared to improve the offense at the same time? Quite a few teams out there with very good pitching for a few season now (Toronto comes to mind) but not the type of offense they need to really compete with the top clubs and they've suffered. A team like Toronto has stayed in the middle of the pack in our division for a while now and it's not because of their pitching. It's got to be an even balance - pitching, offense and defense - and when you don't have the options coming from within, sometimes you gotta look elsewhere if you're an organization that serious about winning...
The only FA bat I really want is Mark Teixeria anyway. He's the real difference maker for us. The rest I'm willing to re-adjust from within. We add at least 2 very good starting pitchers and Mark Teixeria and I think we have enough left over from within to make this work. And that's provided we make the right choice and bring back Abreu - here's a guy that has really lengthened the lineup & put up very good numbers for us since we traded for him. If they let him walk they'll be scrambling trying to fill his shoes and that'll wind up being a problem IMHO. Even with Nady having a year close to last season, w/o Abreu or someone else that can give you Abreu's numbers and presence, they'll suffer. Mark my words. They've gotta ask themselves, are we going all in here or not? Because if you only go 75 or even 90% in it may not be enough. Bring back Abreu...
