It's ironic that based on state taxes and the cost of living, CC will actually end up with much more money for himself each year if he takes Mil's $100 mil offer than if he takes NY's $140 mil offer.

Why the fuck' are the Yankees opening against the scrubs???!!!!

chicago is going to do whatever they can to ruin opening day! Fuck!!!
GKFv2 @ 11/17/2008 9:50 PM
It's an exhibition game, not opening day.

Everything counts. I don't want the 101 year jinx rubbing off on us.

would u take a risk on Brad Penny? he had an injury riddled season last year & it was all in his throwing shoulder, but the guy has shown that he can be a horse & give u tons of innings when he remains healthy, & just a year ago he was among the elite in the game pitching wise.

if u could sign him to a 1 year deal, would u take a shot?

CC should then be positive about Lebron to the Knicks! Guess we'll have to wait 2 years for that

Only at the right price, and that is the number of years. If its only a 1 year deal, Im all for it. But only if we strike out on the other two pitchers.
TMS @ 11/18/2008 12:13 AM
i think the most i would risk on him would be something like a 1 year $7.5 mil offer... he was making $9.25 mil last season so he can't expect to get near that after the season he had.

One year deal? Let's see. He's put more games on his resume in the last three seasons, is about 94-75 overall. Doesn't strike out a lot of batters, but doesn't walk a lot of them either. And he doesn't give too many home runs up either. I suspect he's a low ball, breaking ball kind of pitcher.

The shoulder injury is what worry's me, but the fact that he did' start about 30-33 games in the last couple years, before last year shows me that if he can stay somewhat healthy, then I'd say he'd be worth giving a one year deal to. But I also want to drain all options for someone much better before I do something like that.

But if we had to, then I'd be okay with it. He's only 30 years old, and that makes it even better.

What do you think about picking up someone like Kerry Wood and making him into a one inning (or two out) set up man for Mo?
TMS @ 11/18/2008 3:29 AM
Penny's got a dominant 97-98 mph fastball when healthy... he was 1 of the starting pitchers that helped to beat us in the '03 WS, remember? he's got real nasty stuff when he's on & i remember watching him in the '07 Allstar game he struck out the side of Allstar hitters on something like 9 pitches, it was pretty sick... but consistent right shoulder problems that derailed his season last year are a cause for huge concern.

i think a guy like AJ Burnett also carries big health concerns w/him as well, & he'd likely command a huge longterm contract... i think Penny is a guy we should at least look at & see if we could get him on the cheap.

San Diego Union-Tribune - The Jake Peavy trade derby is now down to one viable team, according to GM Kevin Towers.

“It's really come down to one club now – the Cubs. It's going to take awhile. They have a couple of players to pick from that we are interested in but anything with them is going to potentially involve a third team or fourth team. We're focusing only on them.”

Towers said his conversations with the Yankees “were not substantial” and that he told Yankees GM Brian Cashman “until I get the go-ahead from Jake, I'm not going to” explore trade options with Cashman.

AJ Burnett for that kind of length and money would be a terrible signing and a total Hank move. If Cashman wastes money on Burnett after the whole Pavano fiasco, he should fire himself.

" Who says George Steinbrenner has stepped away from the table?

The Yankees New York Yankees , for the second time inside a week, are on the verge of making an eye-popping offer to a free-agent pitcher and behaving like the days when The Boss threw money at free agents with both hands.

STADIUM OPENS APRIL 3

The Yankees, according to several industry insiders, spent yesterday preparing an offer - perhaps a five-year deal worth about $80 million - for Toronto righty A.J. Burnett. This would come after they offered Milwaukee lefty CC Sabathia a six-year contract worth between $140 million and $145 million.

And the word on the MLB street is the Yankees have the glue for both. Furthermore, baseball decision-makers believe the Yankees will eventually go after Dodger free-agent righty Derek Lowe.

GM Brian Cashman and Darek Brauneker, Burnett's agent, didn't return calls yesterday.

"It wouldn't surprise me if they went to five years with [Burnett]," a baseball executive said of the Yankees. "[Ryan] Dempster is going to sign back with the Cubs for four years and $13 million per, and Burnett is worth more than that."

Burnett, 32 in January, went 18-10 with a 4.07 ERA for the Blue Jays this past season before opting out of the final two seasons, leaving $24 million on the table. "

That's a lot of money but we're DESPERATE. I hope we get both AJ and CC

FoxSports - The Yankees' farm system is strong and deep enough to match up with the Padres if the teams revive their discussions on right-hander Jake Peavy.

The Padres, according to one major-league source, told the Yankees that a deal would be possible even if the Yankees declined to offer right-hander Phil Hughes.

San Diego scouted Hughes in a recent Arizona Fall League game, but the Yankees have zero intention of trading him.

Haven't they learned anything from passing up on Santana? Burnett move is a mistake as well, Carl Pavano part 2.

Damn. I was hoping he'd reconsider but he's always been a funny old duck so it doesn't surprise me. Look for the Yankees to move quickly on Andy Pettitte now. Wouldn't be surprised if they sign up Andy by the end of the week.
