The only way I'll be semi-happy with signing Sabathia and another starter like Sheets or something is if it moves Joba back to the bullpen.

CC
Wang
Sheets
Pettite
Hughes

There is no need for Joba to be in the rotation to begin with, let alone as a 4th starter. Move him back to the pen.
djsunyc @ 12/10/2008 10:24 AM
joba's not needed in the pen. he has 4 pitches. let's see what he can do as a starter. we are stacked in the bullpen.

when mariano's time is up, we can entertain moving joba back there. we still have melancon on the way.

we're also close to bringing in lowe.

cc
wang
lowe
joba
????

and with our bullpen (and all the arms in the minors), i will say that cashman has assembled the best pitching in the majors...

I disagree DJ. Our 8th inning is very questionable - I'd put Joba in there right now and then with Marte in the 7th, you have made this a 6 inning game.

CC
Wang
Sheets
Pettite
Hughes

That's what I'd roll with.

with bruney, marte, melancon, coke...we have enough for the 8th inning.

I'd rather go with the lightsout situation. Using Joba as a 4th starter to me is pointless. If he's going to be your ace or 2nd SP then fine. That's not the case right now. I have a feeling he's going to get injured anyway and end up in the 8th inning at some point.
islesfan @ 12/10/2008 12:05 PM
Nice work by Cashman to get this done quickly, once he got CC talking to them. A little longer of a contract than I would have liked for a pitcher but he's young enough that they'll likely receive good value even on the back end. Now they can get the ball rolling on filling out the rest of their roster.

Joba belongs in the rotation. The fact that he can be successful in the bullpen as an 8th inning guy doesn't mean that he shouldn't be a starter, where he's shown that he can be very successful. Joba would be a 3rd or 4th starter in position only. At one point Maddux, Glavine or Smoltz was a "3rd starter". If Joba continues to improve, the Yankees will have 3 aces in their rotation with CC, Wang and Joba. Plus there's less pressure to rush Hughes, who I think will be a top of the rotation guy.

Now sign another pitcher and get to work on the offense.

Yeah, the bullpen is the one area I'm not that concerned about. They have the anchor and a lot of good arms with more coming up in the minors. Plus managing the bullpen was Girardi's brightest spot last year. I'd really like to see Melancon make the team out of spring training.

FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal reports that CC Sabathia is expected to receive an opt-out clause after three years as part of his deal with the Yankees.
Sabathia would have required it in a contract with any team. The clause will allow him to become a free agent again at the age of 31.

I know its highly unlikely but the Yanks should put full court press on Tex because we really need help in offense.

I would love to see the Yankees say F U to everybody and make a run at Texeira.

Yanks are still going hard after burnett and lowe. CC-wang-burnett-lowe-pettite; joba to pen.
djsunyc @ 12/10/2008 3:09 PM
yanks should offer manny 2 years $60 mil and make him the DH/LF and bat him 4th behind arod.

that would be the greatest 3/4 hitters since gehrig/ruth.

Anyone know if there's any video of Mark Melancon out there?

Nationals offered Mark Tex an 8 year $160 mil contract... i think he'll get more from either ANA or BOS, but i hope the Yanks make a run at him... 8 years $180 mil is reasonable for a guy w/his talent... get er DONE Cash!

Yankees offered AJB a 5 year deal according to ESPN.

Supposedly 5 yrs/80 mil, which if you ask me is nuts. I think CC's money is nuts too, but I guess I'm not the one opening the purse strings.

They are both insane.

i say just get the guys who u know will give u innings in the middle & back end of ur rotation... we got our big fish in CC... him, Wang & Joba are a tremendous 1-2-3 punch as it is... u sign Lowe & Andy P who u know will give u at least 190 or so innings & then shift ur attention to the offense.

BTW, if the Nationals get Mark Teixiera, the Yanks need to work on getting Nick the Stick back
