BTW, if the Nationals get Mark Teixiera, the Yanks need to work on getting Nick the Stick back
TMS @ 12/10/2008 11:37 PM
why? he's a mediocre player at best & he's always injured.

i say just get the guys who u know will give u innings in the middle & back end of ur rotation... we got our big fish in CC... him, Wang & Joba are a tremendous 1-2-3 punch as it is... u sign Lowe & Andy P who u know will give u at least 190 or so innings & then shift ur attention to the offense.

Since we landed CC this afternoon, the more I thought about a second FA pitcher, the more I think Ben Sheets should be the guy. If Sheets is right, he's a much better pitcher than Lowe. When healthy he has an ace's arsenal - 92-95 mph with the heat (guy was hitting 97 mph in the all-star game at the Stadium last summer), good changeup and one of the better curveballs in the game. Only 30 yrs. old. He's injury prone but indications are that it won't take 4 or 5 years like AJ Burnett to get him - might only take a two year deal. And stuff wise, when he's on he's right there with Burnett. Imagine Sheets as your #4 starter - how sick is that?? This guy's a #1 on about 90% of the teams out there...

Sabathia
Wang
Chamberlain
Sheets
Hughes
----------
Aceves/Ian Kennedy

SICK!!!!!!!!!!

Go get Sheets and possibly 1 more bat somehow and I'm ready to go to war!

i like Sheets' stuff but i'm not sure he's got the makeup to handle the pressure in NY to tell u the truth... last thing i wanna see is that guy get injured again & we have to rely on Hughes or Aceves to give us extended innings next season... i have no problems having Hughes play the season in AAA for a little more seasoning if need be... or u can move Joba back to the bullpen as our 8th inning guy & use Hughes or Aceves as your #5 man... the 1 thing i want & absolutely think we need is a horse who u can pencil in for at least 6-7 innings every night for 30 some-odd starts in the middle of the rotation... that not only saves wear & tear on your bullpen, but it also puts a lot less pressure on kids like Hughes & Joba... Wang is not the most durable pitchers of alltime obviously & Joba will be starting games for the first full season of his career at the ML level... u need to have some more stability in the rotation & i think Lowe & Andy P would be perfect to fill that role.

Nationals offered Mark Tex an 8 year $160 mil contract... i think he'll get more from either ANA or BOS, but i hope the Yanks make a run at him... 8 years $180 mil is reasonable for a guy w/his talent... get er DONE Cash!

Yankees offered AJB a 5 year deal according to ESPN.

[Edited by - TMS on 12-10-2008 7:05 PM]

The Nationals?? That came out of nowhere, at least for me.

Boy, wtf? Is he getting a 200 mill deal?

This is a crazy market considering the economy

He's not a mediocre player at best. When healthy last in '06 he put up .290/.428/.520. That's a .948 OPS and as good as Texiera's most recent production. His health is an issue, but you could get him for cheap and he can really hit- its a pretty good gamble, especially considering the Nats would basically have to move him without a spot for him. He can play a very good 1b too.

yeah, he's from Maryland & the Nats want someone to be the face of their franchise... i can't imagine he'd sign w/them tho... he strikes me as a guy who wants to go to a contender.

he's a .270 lifetime hitter, nothing to get excited about... & i've always felt his defense at 1B was highly overrated, at least when he was playing in NY... he often got entangled in his feet & he wasn't the smoothest fielding 1B i'd ever seen, regardless of the reputation he had coming up from the minors... he gets on base at a nice clip which is really the only part of his game that i like... if u could get him for a package of nothing prospects then i wouldn't mind it, but i wouldn't trade anything of worth for him.
TMS @ 12/11/2008 12:48 AM
at least now that we got CC in the fold, other FA's might be more encouraged to come here & compete for a championship next season... u land 1 big fish & the other fish start to come looking for their share... the same could happen w/Lebron in NY in 2010.
TMS @ 12/11/2008 3:44 AM
if Mark Tex ends up somehow signing w/the Nats, he's gonna be demanding a trade outta there by his 2nd season to go to a contender w/o a doubt in my mind.

OBP, OBP, OBP, OBP.....
VDesai @ 12/11/2008 10:09 AM
FYI- Johnson's .396 Career OBP would rank 12th among active players. That's no joke...
djsunyc @ 12/11/2008 12:13 PM
now they're saying aj's 5th year isn't guaranteed...

Our offer or Atlanta's or both?
TMS @ 12/11/2008 4:58 PM
Peavy trade w/the Cubs is off... Yanks should get back into this one.

& looks like Tex is about to sign w/BOS, unless ANA ramps up their pursuit.

Bingo!
CC, Wang, Peavy, Joba, and Pettitte. That would be fantastic.

TMS @ 12/11/2008 6:05 PM
i'd give up Cano & Hughes for him right now if i could... or Jackson & Hughes... it's all up to Peavy, SD is already interested in some of our prospects... maybe having CC in the fold now makes NY a little less pressure of a situation for Peavy? he likes to hit but SD is fast running out of NL options to trade him to.

that would be a sick rotation.

i'm sold on burnett. the guy has dominating stuff and he's pitched awesome vs. the al east. he's averaged 6 1/2 innings a game over the past 5 years and an average of 26 starts a year. we can survive any injury to these guys b/c we can always spot start hughes, kennedy or aceves if need be.

cc + wang + burnett + ???? + joba = fantastic staff

i wish wish wish we could get tex too. getting tex would make this the greatest offseason in yankee history.
jaydh @ 12/11/2008 6:58 PM

In terms of stuff, AJB has the best still available, probably by far. It's the injury history and the consistency that you worry about. My only concern is guaranteeing a 5th year. I'd be worrying if they signed him but I could understand it.

I'm surprised that the Yankees aren't showing more interest in Texeira. Granted it's a lot of money but they have a need for a 1st baseman and they have another $45 million coming off the books next year between Damon, Matsui, Nady and assuming Pettitte signs for 1 year. Maybe they think that Jesus Montero is a year or two away, like Austin Jackson, and want to keep a position open for him. Montero is a catcher now but I think he'll end up a first baseman.
TMS @ 12/11/2008 8:43 PM
the Yanks should match the Nationals' offer cuz right now it looks like that's the most he's getting from any team... BOS is banking on luring him to their team for less to play for a winning franchise... even if the Yankees have no intentions of signing Tex, they need to get involved here if for nothing else but to up the cost for BOS to sign him... if they get "stuck" w/a guy like Mark Tex it wouldn't be the end of the world, he's only the best positional player available in free agency this year & we do need an upgrade at 1B.
