ROBBIE CANO DON'TCHA KNOW coming through once again... 2nd HR of the day.
12-11 Red Sox in the 8th... this is one crazy azz game!
TMS@ 4/25/2009 7:54 PM
what a horrible blown call by the ump on that steal... Ellsbury was out by a good margin.
good to see we have such dependable late relief on this team... can someone get some outs on this damn team???
TMS@ 4/25/2009 8:10 PM
this game's over... AWFUL pitching today, just AWFUL! Johnny Damon, is there a worse defensive OFer in the game? i doubt it... this guy is a joke in the field... our pitching is a joke right now, we have no reliable setup men now that Bruney's gone... shades of last year w/o a doubt.

girardi's seat needs to get a little warm.
djsunyc@ 4/25/2009 8:32 PM
it's april. they are 9-8. we have a lot of young arms...sometimes it takes a little time to get aclimated and adjusted. today was on aj burnett for not holding a 6-0 lead. bullpen has been used alot lately so i am not going to get on them.
TMS@ 4/25/2009 8:41 PM
today was on the whole pitching staff, not just on AJ... how many times did the offense fight back to take the lead, only to have it given right back? face it, games like this & the one last night are gonna hurt i don't care if it's April or September... they all count in the W-L column, especially against a divisional rival like the Red Sux who we'll be chasing all year for a playoff spot.

what i tell u guys last year... we shoulda traded for Jason Bay, NOT Xavier Nady... the guy is hugely clutch for the Red Sux ever since he got there... i don't wanna hear anymore how he wouldn't be able to handle a high pressure situation, he's already proven he can.
I definitely agree with that.
Bonn1997@ 4/26/2009 7:12 AM
The offense has been very good overall, especially considering we don't have A-Rod. The starting pitching has been bad and the bullpen is just a disaster.
Bonn1997@ 4/26/2009 9:32 AM
If they don't make any major moves, then they really need two out of Wang, Hughes, and Kennedy to be able to pitch at the major league level (i.e., about a 4.50 or less ERA) and to move Joba into the bullpen. Then if the starters could get through six, I'd feel confident with Bruney, Joba, and Rivera being the 7th, 8th, and 9th inning men (as long as Joba can return to his pre-2009 form, which I believe he can).

I agree; I hate the "It's only April BS." If Hughes and Kennedy hadn't gone winless in 17 starts early last season, we would have had a pretty good shot at being a playoff team.

melancon better be the truth.
any word on nady getting back? i really wish we could have damon DH, his fielding is just atrocious.
should've traded matsui when his stock was higher before the 08 season. this team is just poorly put together right now.

Its kinda weak how the Yankees have become everything that their haters have accused them of. An unbalanced, overpaid group of mercenaries. The Yankees simply throw millions at every problem hoping for quick fixes.

the Yankees have always thrown big money at players to field the best teams... it's just been more pronounced since '01 after they went & signed Mussina... the media has stressed the fact that they've been trying to buy championships ever since then but anyone who knows this team will tell u that they've been going after the best & biggest players throughout their history... on paper this team looks to be very well constructed & very capable of winning a championship, but in the end it's up to the players to go out & execute... they're just not getting the job done as a unit... this needs to change or else we're gonna find ourselves out of the playoff picture for the 2nd straight year... i defy anyone who's watched this team this year to tell me they feel strongly confident that this team will win the AL East this year... putting together a great team is one thing, the rest is up to the players themselves to go out & do it.

A $206 million team with these kind of weaknesses is really sad. The bullpen is weak, the starting pitching is sketchy and the outfield is a question mark. And our bench - long our strong point with guys like Ruben Sierra, Luis Sojo, Glennalen Hill, etc. - is one of the worst in the majors. I don't understand why the Yankees think paying 3 or 4 superstars max money is going to help this team become a World Series champion. I'd rather spread out that money and make this a strong team from top to bottom.

I think the starting pitching is pretty strong and the struggles of Wang and CC couldn't have been foreseen. I do think the starting pitching will get better--closer to the players career averages--once we have larger samples of games pitched. (Having Johan would have been awfully nice, though.) However, there is absolutely no reason a $206 mil team should have this many question marks at best in its bullpen. We have not had a very good setup man since Gordon, and it's quite baffling. The mid relief is pretty shaky too. As far as the bench goes, I think the outfield is pretty strong unless there are multiple injuries. The infield is very weak, though. We don't have any respectable utility infielders, which is also hard to understand. It's not like it's remotely difficult to get a solid utility infielder.

posada, joba, cano, melky/gardner, jeter, pettitte, mariano, our entire bullpen is basically all homegrown. in fact, there are more homegrown players on this roster than any of the 96-00 yankee teams. what's happened is that we got lucky with the players in that era. winning a championship in baseball ain't easy dawg. the 96-00 yankees spoiled everybody but i remember the 82-94 yanks that didn't make the postseason. it ain't easy...people need to lower expectations b/c baseball is funny that way.

hmmmm. The only thing that's changed since the 96-00 era is that Cashman took over as the GM. No one here is complaining about not winning a championship. Please get that straight. We're complaining about having teams that either don't make or make but don't compete in the playoffs. Now the things this team is lacking are things that it shouldn't take a rocket scientist to acquire--adequate setup men and a utility infielder.

You're preaching to the choir about homegrown talent, but to be fair 50% of the names you just listed came up in the mid-90s. Out of the rest of them, Melky is barely an everyday player. So really there is only Cano and Joba to show for the Yankee farm system in the past 10 years.
And no matter how much we can rationalize it, when we are spending 100-80 million more than many of our closet competitors we should win. Bottom line. When the Yankees had their run we were spending competitively with teams like Baltimore and Boston. Now its just obscene. I bleed pinstripes, but damn if the Yanks dont need to reevaluate their model.

the Yankees won multiple championships using that model... '77 & '78 don't happen if they don't go out & sign the biggest FA names on the market, namely Reggie Jackson & Catfish Hunter... '99 & '00 may not have happened if they don't go out & trade for Roger Clemens... the Yankees are making money hand over foot w/their current business model & are the winningest team in the majors this decade... the only thing they've failed at is winning championships since '00, but they've managed to get to 2 more World Series since then & came within 2 outs of winning 1 of them & a single win from getting to another in '04... this offseason was universally hailed as a great one for the Yankees' franchise by fans & media alike... u can't start playing hindsight GM now & criticizing the Yankees' braintrust for making the moves they made... it's up to the players to go out & do it now, bottomline.
