Juan Miranda should replace Veras. We don't need 13 pitchers on the roster and we have no power off the bench. Historically we've always had a power guy off the bench.
VDesai @ 5/1/2009 11:31 PM
Shelley Duncan is absolutely mashing in AAA....he already has 9 homers and has like an 1.100 OPS

GREAT WIN tonight! Unbelievable comeback against a team that's really had our number the past few seasons.

Robbie's just an awesome hitter. Huge power numbers may or may not ever come, but he just hits line drives all over the yard and had soft hands and tremendous range at 2nd. Great player.

I'm really enjoying watching Ramiro Pena play. He had the mincue tonight at 3rd that cost Pettitte a little in the 6th (no way that was a hit, I'm sorry) but overall he plays very good defense (remember this kid never even played 3rd before -- you can just tell he has a great feel for playing defense), has a surprisingly quick bat and he's looks pretty fast on the bases - I betcha he's the 2nd fastest player on the team behind Gardner, slightly ahead of Jeter and Damon at this point in their careers. When A-Rod comes back, I want this kid to remain on the roster. You can tell he's becoming a Girardi favorite. You need guys like this. Can't have an all-star at every position. I'm happy for the kid man...

I'm not ready to give up on Jose Veras just yet. I love his stuff. Let's not forget, w/o Veras we don't win that extra inning game against the A's a few games back on the last homestand (what did he give us, 3+ innings of scoreless ball that afternoon?? And he dominated the As lineup in the process.). I think he might benefit from a little extra work myself. He might not be pitching enough and it's tough to stay sharp w/o enough work. Tonight wasn't pretty but I believe in this kid's ability. He's clearly got the stuff to get guys out. He might just need to be pitching more. If Sabathia gives us a decent start and we need to go to the bullpen in a tight game this afternoon, I'd send Veras right back out there today if I'm Girardi w/o hesitation. Then again, I'd love to see CC wake up and just dominate the Angels.

Yankees pen blows game and their bats save the game. I think this is something we'll be seeing a little too often. The pen has a lot of question marks in there or just plain duds.

Anyway, exciting comeback victory. I was really happy with that comeback. They toughed it out and cut down the lead going into the 9th. Thanks to Fuentes' amazing amount of suck and their spirit, they won the game.

BTW I heard that Swisher got injured but the X-rays were negative. Hopefully he comes back OK. Losing him would suck immensely.
Melancon and Veras f'd up but the bats were huge. I must have fallen asleep after 8 innings unfortunately because the last I remember, it was 9 to 8. Darn!

The team's ERA is 7.75 in the 122 innings that Posada has caught and 2.96 in the 75 innings Molina has caught. That difference is just unbelievable. (With larger samples last year, there was still about a 1 run ERA difference favoring Molina.)
TMS @ 5/2/2009 5:07 AM
Molina is just a much better caller of games than Jorge, but Jorge brings the offense... what'ya gonna do... it's a good balance tho... too bad we can't mash these fuggers together like transformers... btw. i'm pretty A-fan'd right now... watching the game now on DVR... GO YANKEES! fuggers.
TMS @ 5/2/2009 5:13 AM
Pena's fuggin money... love this kid... GO YANKEEEESSS!

I just realized that part of that huge discrepancy is from Wang's nightmare games and also going deep into the bullpen in those games. The 1 run ERA difference from last year is probably a more realistic estimate. But yeah Posada is a much better hitter and Matsui is a very good DH. Overall, I can't criticize Girardi for his use of those three players.

perfect!
TMS @ 5/2/2009 1:01 PM
now that's the Yankees team i know & love... they showed some guts last night for a change instead of folding after giving up a lead... that was great to see... the young kids Melky & Pena are coming up bigtime for us in clutch situations... that can't be understated.

Angels are missing K Rod bigtime, no doubt about it... w/o him they lose their fear factor... losing Tex & missing Lackey & Vlad also has really hurt their swagger... they're not the same team at all & it shows... i'm not complaining tho... would be nice to dominate them for a change... they usually own us every year.

i'm thinking CC has a great outing today... the last time out his fastball had some life to it & his slider was breaking nicely... even tho it wasn't a stellar start he still struck out a decent amount of guys... i think today he may come up w/a gem & keep this winning streak going... keeping my fingers crossed.
TMS @ 5/2/2009 1:26 PM
Matsui's locked in at the plate... Yanks 1-0
TMS @ 5/2/2009 3:27 PM
strong 6+ innings by CC but he ran outta gas at the end & gave up some big hits to the Angels... at least his velocity is getting up again in the 98 mph range late in the game, which is a good sign... the slider had some nasty break to it today too.

hopefully they have another comeback in them... 5-1 in the 7th, not insurmountable.
VDesai @ 5/2/2009 3:49 PM
Veras is awful!
VDesai @ 5/2/2009 3:49 PM
BTW, CC's been getting whacked in day games all year and I'm not sure why.
TMS @ 5/2/2009 3:59 PM
Joe G seriously needs to move Mark Tex down in the batting order... he's killing us right now w/men on base... Cano should be hitting 3rd w/Matsui batting cleanup (he's already got them hitting back to back anyway)... i'd move Tex to 5th or even 6th when Swisher gets back... he's scuffling & until he gets his stroke back there's no way we can afford to have a sub .200 hitter hitting 3rd in the lineup.

& we really need to figure out a way to keep Damon out of the OF but still put him in the lineup... he's a liability in the OF... cost us at least a couple runs today w/his complete misreads of flyballs & bad routes he takes to balls in the gaps.

Yeah I wouldn't be averse to moving Tex down, but I think what might get him going is hitting in front of ARod and getting to see some better pitches.
TMS @ 5/2/2009 4:06 PM
i have my own concerns about ARod once he gets back too... i don't think he's gonna come outta the gate mashing either... he still hasn't ran full speed or slid on the bases to test that hip yet so i think next weekend might be a little optimistic for his return like the Yankees were originally hoping for.

i know Tex's bat will come around but right now we got 3 guys that are really hot at the plate in Cano, Matsui & Swisher... those are the guys that should be the meat of our batting order for now.
VDesai @ 5/2/2009 4:08 PM
I think today is more or less an aberration. Its always tough in the day game after a night game after a big win like last night. Doesn't look like the comeback is in them today. They should've been able to hit that no name pitcher.

Dissapointing that Robertson is even struggling here. He has a great K rate since he's been up with the Yanks, but can't seem to bring the consistency from batter to batter.
djsunyc @ 5/2/2009 4:11 PM
swish out of the lineup hurts.

jeter's error changed the complexion of the game.

and that strike call on jeter making it 2-1 instead of 3-0 was terrible.

can't win them all...but cc has to get out of that inning. just like last night - 1 more out to get out of it unscathed and neither pettite or cc could do it.

hopefully hughes pitches a good game tomorrow.

wasn't thrilled with girardi pinch hitting posada for pena. veras looks like toast. robertson hasn't been used in like forever. tough to keep sharp like that.
