Mitre's hot & cold... i don't think u can rely on him in any postseason game & i doubt (or at least i hope) that Joe G feels the same way.

I don't remember Mitre ever being hot. He's definitely been more cold considering his near 8 ERA. This guy sucks. I don't understand why Joe has so much faith in him.

B/c he's a sinker ball pitcher. If he finds his niche, he'd be brutal to deal with. Don't worry though. He's not touching a playoff game. Nor should he.

i was at the game when he pitched to a 1 hitter into the 6th inning... he looked pretty damn good that day... just like Afan said, he needs to get his ball down... if he doesn't do that, he gets lit up... Chien Ming Wang has the same problem & he's got much better stuff than Mitre.

Hey quick question for you guys - can the 40-man roster be adjusted right now or is it set? There are 3 guys I'd like to get a look at now that SWB's season just came to a close and only 1 guy is on the 40-man - Ian Kennedy (on the 40-man), Romulo Sanchez & Humberto Sanchez. Kennedy and R. Sanchez pitched well starting games in the post-season for Scranton and Humberto Sanchez looked good out of the bullpen (nice little write-up in Newsday about him today and the progress he's made since re-signing with the organization May 1st after being released in April). Like I said I'm done with Mitre fellas and I wouldn't mind seeing either Kennedy or R. Sanchez get a few starts at the tail end of the rotation to wrap up the season. And I think H. Sanchez might be a decent option for the bullpen right now if possible - who knows how Robertson's arm is gonna bounce back here..

He doesn't belong on an MLB roster--let alone be a regular starter on the best team in baseball
Finestrg @ 9/19/2009 12:49 AM
Wow. I can't believe how bad that sucked. I wouldn't have even pitched to him. I know it's Mo, Ichiro was only 2-10 off him and you probably don't wanna put the winning run on like that, but I wouldn't have pitched to him there. Never would've dreamed that little bitch would've went yard like that either. Wow. Unbelieveable. Silver lining - Mo looked good. Very strong. When's the last time he hit 93 MPH? He was 92-93 consistent throughout the inning..

Agree bro. I think though sometimes you just get hit. I don't think you can second-guess the move - I'd have Mo pitch to any player in the game, including Pujols. Sometimes they just get the better of you.

Nice 10-1 win last night. Back on track. I conked out early after a big day out with the family & missed everything after the early Tex triple. Just saw the highlights. Man, SCARY situation with the line drive back at CC - got hit in the chest, first it looked like it hit him in the face or the throat. Glad he's OK. If he ever goes down, forget it. He's been awesome, a real horse. I like our chances today - Joba's been a little better lately and may be allowed to stretch it out a little bit now and the last time they faced Snell they hit him hard...

Looks like Kennedy is back with the big club. Good. I'm glad he's healthy. He needs to get a few starts down the stretch here so we can see what we have with him at this level - I'm done with Mitre. If Joe doesn't want to start this kid Kennedy and only give him a couple of innings in relief here & there then gimmie Gaudin in those starts...I wonder why we never called up Austin Jackson? Out of all the players we've called up, I just assumed he would've been one of them - I think he's our most important minor leaguer to evaluate right now. We should want to give him a look here in Sept. so we could see if he fits and if he's ready for the next step. Out of our big free agents - Damon, Matsui and Pettitte - I think Matsui and Pettitte may be more important to re-sign for next year. Damon has put up nice numbers in the 2 hole but I think he could be replaced. I really wanted to get a good look at A-Jax to see if he's ready for the majors and ready for a spot on the team next year. At AAA in over 500 ABs he hit .300 even with 23 2Bs and stole 24 bases in 28 attempts. Only 4 HRs though, just 40 walks and he did strike out 123 times. He may not be ready to hit 2nd for us but I think he might be ready for the majors (we have some flexibility - I'd like to leave Jete in the leadoff spot but if he had to hit 2nd next year it's not the end of the world [Jeter's whole approach is perfect for the 2 hole anyway as he's proved for years]. Gardy could leadoff some or Jeter could remain at the top and either Swisher or Robbie can hit 2 maybe..). I guess they don't want to rush this kid but I don't think getting him some ABs in Sept. could've hurt here. I think it would've been a good move.

RE: Damon and Matsui: They're both very good hitters. Replacing either would be doable but not easy. (I haven't looked at FA lists in a while though.) The issue is they're probably both going to want multi-year deals, but I have much more confidence in Damon's health over the long-term than in Matsui's.

I hear ya Bonn. I just don't know how you replace Matsui's production as an everyday DH. The guy just broke the record for most HRs as a Yankee DH. Says a lot no? I also think that making him the primary DH this year has really saved him and kept him fresh which is exactly what this guy needed. If he wanted a 2 or 3 year deal I'd have to consider it. I think he'll hold up physically for that amount of time and remain productive. Who replaces Matsui in that role from within if he walks? Juan Miranda? He's an everyday 1st baseman and too young for that role. Shelley Duncan? Maybe but that's asking a lot out of Duncan. We don't really have a replacement for him. And I like that he's lefty too - he balances the middle portion of the lineup nicely...If Pettitte wants to come back on a 1-yr. deal (at this juncture, I think Andy's comfortable with the 1-yr. deal) I'd give it to him - he's been good this year/way better than I ever expected, he's probably earned it with his body of work for us & I'm not sure about the back end of the rotation as of yet (which is why I want to see Kennedy make a couple of starts down the stretch here). Just a gut feeling but I think Damon is the guy they might let go to save some money - Damon's already prepared for it too if you've heard him talk about it. He likes it here but has no problems moving on which tells me he doesn't have any sense of allegience. First and formost, Damon's gonna want to get paid and after putting up really nice numbers, he's gonna want his. The asking price might just be too much. We might have a replacement here with A-Jax - this kid obviously has to develop further but he did hit .300 in over 500 ABs at minor league's highest level. And he supposedly plays a great outfield. I'm just really surprised they didn't care to call him up to get a closer look.
Bonn1997 @ 9/20/2009 1:51 PM
Well replacing Matsui as a DH is not a problem. It's replacing his replacement that is. Right now we've got a bunch of guys who should be DHing--Matsui, Damon, & Posada. Getting an outfielder to replace Damon if he became the DH probably wouldn't be too hard.
Allanfan20 @ 9/20/2009 1:53 PM
Maybe they feel they don't wanna push AJ too much after getting 500 ABs, to avoid him getting injured. I suppose that's understandable.

I've said it before though, and I see it again. If AJ is as good as people say, an outfield of Gardner, Cabrera and Jackson wouldn't be so bad. If Melky can be maybe a little more consistent at the plate and if Garnder picks off where he was before his injury, that's a pretty tough OF. Not to mention cheap.
TMS @ 9/20/2009 6:23 PM
don't get too hyped up on Austin Jackson so much... i mean the kid's got talent it's clear otherwise the Yankees' brass wouldn't be so high on him, but if u compare their minor league stats side by side, other than stolen bases they're no better than Melky Cabrera's... i wouldn't count on him being a part of the major league roster on a regular basis for at least another year... kid is still only 22 years old, about the same age Melky was when he was still playing in the minors.

Yeah what a stinker again today right? Something's wrong here. I know he's a starter for now and that's that, but I'm tellin' ya I'd really reconsider his role over the winter. And this is after I advocated him starting way back when they made the move - I just thought we might eventually have another Justin Verlander on our hands and that it was worth it to find out. Well that's not the case. I just don't feel the same about him in a starting role anymore - to me I've seen enough where I now feel it's a failed experiment. If it were up to me, I'd put him in the bullpen for the playoffs and see how he reacts (and he's definitely on the roster for the ALDS - I've heard some talk on the radio about leaving him off the roster for the 1st round - no way, that's insane & way too extreme). Hopefully by the end of next spring Kennedy and maybe 1 other starting pitcher emerge on the scene, plus I think Hughes will be given a chance to start next year. I'd love nothing better than to see Joba back in the bullpen dominating and pitching with his mojo again. 98-100, hammer slider and all the pumped up Jeff Nelson chainsaws he can give us out there! If we tried that for the playoffs and saw that again, he's my closer for the future after Mariano. Case closed.

Then again God willing we get to the ALCS, we'll need a 4th starter, so I guess he'll have to remain in the rotation for the time being. I just hope he's ready to throw at least 6 innings by then.
VDesai @ 9/21/2009 2:15 PM
I can't see Joba throwing a playoff game right now. We may have some issues there. Would probably be more comfortable with Gaudin at this pt.
VDesai @ 9/21/2009 2:16 PM
Still I would not give up on Joba as a starter. Young guys just have growing pains. We need to rebuild his confidence.
