And we had heart of the order coming up too...
GKFv2 @ 10/19/2009 9:18 PM
I hope this is only a small footnote in our championship run because if it isn't it will remembered as a huge blunder for a long time.

Right now we gave the Angels momentum and let them back in this series. If we don't win tomorrow, it's time to hit that panic button.
VDesai @ 10/19/2009 9:20 PM
Luckily there is nothing easier than watching CC go 8 and Mo pitch the 9th.

This is why we pay Sabathia the big bucks.

I sure do hope and pray that's what happens because if CC slumps, we're in trouble. Also, the offense needs to wake the F up a bit.

Joba, Gaudin, Coke, Marte & Aceves are all fresh so bullpen depth shouldn't be much of an issue tomorrow... i'm sure Mo can give us an inning tomorrow as well if need be & so can Robertson... i'd probably stay away from Hughes tomorrow, but everyone else should be good to go.
djsunyc @ 10/20/2009 1:17 AM
dang man...when i saw him come out to the mound to get robertson...i almost lost it. it made no sense whatsoever. what was his explanation? that was a total panic/rookie postseason move on his part and he got burned. hope that teaches him a valuable lesson.

again guys, joba has lost 3-4 mph on his fastball. that has changed everything. why or how is inconsequential but his bullpen stints have maxed out at 95 and i've still seen him around 92/93.

need to win 1 out of the next 2. winning tomorrow would be ideal to kind of put a damper on the angels buzz...but this series is still a pick'em...
TMS @ 10/20/2009 1:42 AM
definitely need to win game 4 cuz who knows if AJB will continue to pitch the way he's been pitching in game 5... if we lose this next game it's 2-2 & pressure is on AJ to win game 5... we don't wanna come back to the Bronx down 3-2 obviously.

Joba's arm is probably dead because he's thrown too many innings this year. He seems to throw hard on a lot of rest still (like after the all-star break and at the start of the post-season after time off). This year was good just for building up his inning count and arm strength and showing us at times what he can do.
djsunyc @ 10/20/2009 9:50 AM
at least there's a game today so that loss won't marinate...

Supposedly Joe saw that Kendrick was 1/2 against Robertson (Huge sample size!) and so he changed to Aceves who had never faced him.

lol...

it's possible that they knew a weakness in kendrick's approach (possibly some more offspeed stuff) that aceves throws better than robertson and that's why they made the switch and why he didn't reveal the real reason (as they don't want to give away anything since there's more games)...

just throwing darts blindfolded there...i personally would've kept robertson in the game, but this is how girardi has managed his bullpen this postseason. so far it's worked but it burned him yesterday. all the other moves i didn't mind too much...
Allanfan20 @ 10/20/2009 10:07 AM
I'm not going to go out and kill Joe like everyone else, but man, he has not been handling this bullpen the way he did in the regular season. It may work against regular season teams in the playoffs, or it may look like it works when your opponents make big errors, but the Angels will wake up and they did last night. Now it's time for Joe to wake up. Him throwing the entire bullpen out there isn't going to cut it.
djsunyc @ 10/20/2009 10:35 AM
oh...and i think mariano is the greatest pitcher i've ever seen in my lifetime.

he's probably the 2nd best yankee pitcher all time to whitey ford, but i never saw him pitch.

maddux, clemens, randy and pedro were the best during my time in terms of starters...but what mariano has done for the past 14 years is downright disgusting.

him getting out of that bases loaded jam was...wow...

we are spoiled as i look at every other closer in the league and laugh. but soon, he won't be doing this anymore and we will be like everybody else.
VDesai @ 10/20/2009 10:37 AM
Joe needs to trust Robertson..guys got great stuff. In fact I'd use Robertson in more high leverage situations than I'd use Joba right now.

All in all its the first time we lost. No reason to hit the panic button. But you hate losing in the manner we did...1 run game in extra innings with a lot of overmanaging.

We definitely need to do more on offense than piece together a bunch of solo HRs
Bonn1997 @ 10/20/2009 12:37 PM
Mariano's up there but I think it's just impossible to compare a closer to a starter. As much as I love Mariano, if someone told me Hughes could develop into your choice--a closer who saves 500 games or a starter who wins 350--I'd pick the starter who wins 350.

Olney seemed to agree with my reasoning at the time that the reason Aceves was brought in was because Kendrick was batting .341 against fastball pitchers this season... so again i think Aceves was brought in cuz he changes speeds more than Robertson & Joe thought he'd be the better matchup... it obviously didn't work out but that was probably his reasoning.
VDesai @ 10/20/2009 2:04 PM
Robertson puts away guys with his curveball though.

Either way its a case of overthinking it. Aceves really struggled in the 2nd half onwards and Robertson when he was healthy had moments of dominance. Aceves was also brutal away from Yankee stadium. 6.42 ERA vs. 1.61 at home. Just one of those situations for wherever there's a split in your favor there's a split out of your favor.

The right thing to do is trust the guy who's getting people out and not laboring to keep getting people out.
jimimou @ 10/20/2009 2:14 PM
its all good fellas - let's move forward and concentrate on tonight. joe made a blunder, the guy is just trying to win games and made a rookie mistake with the pitching moves. yanks gotta rally tonight and take this to 3-1.

LETS GO YANKESS!!!!!!!
VDesai @ 10/20/2009 2:16 PM
I'm confident in CC. Once Tex and a couple of bats wake up we'll roll to a title.
TMS @ 10/20/2009 2:21 PM
i agree jimi... i do think Joe overmanaged there but sometimes u go w/what ur gut tells u to do, it doesn't always work out... i've seen Joe Torre make similar moves also in past postseasons, sometimes they'd work out, sometimes they didn't... u can't tell what's gonna happen ahead of time, u just gotta trust ur instincts sometimes & the rest is up to the players to deliver & do their jobs... Aceves didn't do his job there, so he's equally to blame if u ask me... if he comes in & gets Kendrick out then Joe gets called a genius for making that move.

we really need to win tonight's game... gotta get the momentum back from the Halos, can't let it get to 2-2 w/game 5 in Anaheim.

i'm a girardi fan...but robertson has been on fire these playoffs and aceves has been shaky at best...that was a tough one, even for me to let go. all the other moves, i didn't have a problem with...
