i agree re: not going after sheets or zambrano. with CC and AJ at the top, plus the potential for either joba or hughes (or hopefully both working out), the yankees have the electric arms. we need reliable innings eaters, not a flier on a guy like sheets who could be great or could make 5 starts and miss the rest of the year. i'd rather have garland or lilly and know i'm gonna get 200 IP or near it and go to battle with CC, AJ, andy, and either joba or hughes in october.
djsunyc @ 12/22/2009 9:58 AM
did we just trade melky for javi vasquez?
djsunyc @ 12/22/2009 10:03 AM
Sherman tweets that the Braves are acquiring righty Arodys Vizcaino, Melky and Dunn for Boone Logan and Javier Vazquez.
jusnice @ 12/22/2009 10:12 AM
Melky gone to Atlanta for Vazquez - confirmed on SI and Yahoo. I need some time to digest this, but I like it. Maybe Cash thinks Austin Jackson is ready to play LF or we are going after another OF, b/c we do not have an everyday LF on the roster now.
VDesai @ 12/22/2009 10:13 AM
I dont understand going after Javy Vazquez. He's already proven himself to have a tough time pitching in NY and in the American League. Aroydis Vizcaino was a pretty big prospect. Dunn was gonna be Coke's replacement...

We don't have AUstin Jackson- we traded him for Granderson, who's our everyday LF.

We don't have an everyday CF- but it'll be either Brett Gardner or the guy we took in the rule 5 draft whom we traded Bruney for. He has to stay in the majors for us to keep him and he's got a chance to be as productive as Melky.

i though granderson was our everyday CF and we're looking for a LF.

the objective was to bring in an innings eater to take the 4 slot in the rotation...while putting hughes or chamberlain in the pen. and we got a high quality innings eater.

offseason isn't done so i'm thinking another OF is coming...so they viewed melky or gardner as a luxury at this point. and cash always liked vasquez.

i trust ca$h money...

Woops, you are correct. Jimi and I were discussing yesterday and forgot this point...need to stop smokin the reef

Although I'm pretty sure Granderson plays CF for us. Maybe we go get Bay or Holiday after all. Sweet, evil empire

This definitely frees things up to re-sign Damon

SupremeCommander @ 12/22/2009 10:41 AM
Buster Olney is reporting the deal is Cabrera and Dunn for Vazquez and Boone Logan--no mention of Vizcaino
VDesai @ 12/22/2009 10:44 AM
Granderson won't play center if Gardner is the starter in the OF. And the guy we got from the Dodgers, Jamie Hoffman, is probably a better CF than him too. So Granderson is probably more likely to be in left for now.

I just realized Boone Logan is a lefty reliever- so the Michael Dunn part is a wash. If it basically boils down to Melky and a 19 yr old pitching prospect in short season ball for Vazquez- well thats pretty much a steal, even if Vazquez is only average this year.

nyk4ever @ 12/22/2009 11:41 AM
Looks like the Yanks got Javier Vazquez back

Joel Sherman of the New York Post has confirmed that the Yankees have acquired Javier Vazquez and LHP Boone Logan from the Braves for outfielder Melky Cabrera, LHP Mike Dunn and RHP Arodys Vizcaino.

i hate Javy Vazquez & i don't like this trade at all... Melky was 1 of our most clutch hitters last year, how many walkoffs did he have? Javy chokes in big spots & he always throws up meatballs for hitters to crush... if we were gonna give up Melky i woulda been a lot more comfortable w/someone like Ted Lilly who proved himself to rise up to big moments in NY before... we shoulda never traded him for Jeff Weaver to begin with... if Javy was the best we could do i woulda been fine with giving up Brett Gardner, his bat's too weak to be a fulltime OFer anyways... sorry to see Melky go in this trade & the Yanks were supposedly very high on Dunn... we better sign that Cuban kid & Johnny Damon now to fill the holes left behind w/this trade... i'm not pinning my hopes on some rule 5 pickup as my starting OFer next season.

TMS, we usually agree on most stuff, but I have to admit that I've never liked Melky and always thought he would be traded eventually. I kind of like Javy for one year as an experienced innings eater with nasty stuff. We've already proved that we can go through the playoffs with 3 pitchers, but that was last year and I think they are going to fix the schedule to discourage that for this year. I like the deal, but I would have liked to see more of this Vizcaino kid. The best thing for me is that now we have a real possibility to sign Damon. If the rule 5 guy sticks (forgot his name) Gardner can still be sent to the minors (which is what I think will happen) and be brought back up when rosters expand before the playoffs. I think we've made some good moves to get us back to the playoffs and Girardi has some good flexibility to set the playoff roster. So far, I like what we've done.

I really hope we move Joba to the pen. He's painful to watch as a starter but electric coming in relief. Phil has the better mentality and skill set to take the 5th spot. I still think we'll pick up another bullpen arm but if we don't we should still be very solid. All in all, if we just add Damon we are looking very solid at the plate, defensively in the field, starting pitching, relief pitching and our back-ups. This is going to be a kick-ass team with depth.

My only complaint is I still wish we had an outfielder with a canon for an arm, but I guess you just cant have everything

javy vazquez pitched well in the first half the yr he was with the yanks and then apparently toughed out the 2nd half with a hurt shoulder -- and got lit up. ca$hman has always liked him. he's a solid #3/4 pitcher, (versus staff ace like he was when he was here the first time) he'll give us 200 IP and strike guys out. now either joba or hughes is the 5 starter and the other sets up mo. the other guy in the deal from ATL goes to the bullpen as well. i dug melky and his clutchness last yr, but those things vary from year to year and are so situational. matsui and melky are now both gone, somebody else will have to step up.

interesting stuff with the CF/LF situation. granderson, for all intents and purposes, is the next CF. from what cashman said at the press conference when he was introduced to what granderson himself said, i'm led to believe that he'll play CF. i think gardner will be a late inning defensive replacement and speed guy, basically the 4th of. swisher still in RF. who is playing left? will they bring damon back? still moves to be made.

BigSm00th @ 12/22/2009 1:28 PM
from no mas: Javy was 10-5, 3.56 in the first half of 2004 and made the All-Star team. He imploded during the second half (4-5, 6.92).

also, what happened to Xavier Nady? I thought he was a FA? Why not him as the LF?

TMS @ 12/22/2009 2:11 PM
Nady's a FA & was not offered arbitration... i doubt he's back w/us next year but who knows.

as for Javy, i don't care what he put up in the 1st half of the season as much as what he showed me down the stretch & in the postseason... he imploded in big spots... i hope that was all due to his injury but i've seen Javy implode in big spots while pitching w/the White Sox too... to me he just doesn't have the mentality to make it in a high pressure atmosphere like NY... put him in the NL & his weaknesses are hidden... he woulda been an better addition for the Muts than for us if u ask me.

Granderson should be starting in CF... i was not a huge fan of Melky but he did come up big in big moments... plus he was the only guy that kept runners honest w/his throwing arm... unless the Yankees just weren't happy w/his work ethic or his influence on Robbie, i don't really get this move to be honest... if we were looking for an innings eater we could easily have signed someone like Jon Garland to a 1 year deal & not have to give up anything like i said from the beginning.

right now what's done is done & i'll have to hope for the best, but i don't like this tradeoff at all... hopefully we can now re-sign Johnny Damon & bring in the Cuban lefty to shore up our bullpen... Joba will be starting this season cuz he's no longer on an innings limit & Phil Hughes didn't pitch enough innings last year (i'd rather the roles be reversed cuz i think Joba's got more of a reliever's mentality but can't change what happened last year so gotta roll w/it)

Yankees payroll for next season stands at $200.9 million

Yanks looking at Mark DeRosa & Marlon Byrd

i've liked Byrd for a while... called for us to trade for him for a couple years now... i think he'd make an excellent replacement for Melky... that is of course if Johnny Damon refuses to come down on his contract demands... Byrd can play all 3 OF positions so he gives us versatility & he's got a solid ML bat w/some pop... if u wanted u could even platoon him w/Brett Gardner in a lefty-righty switch.

Byrd or Jermaine Dye would be my guys if Damon doesn't chill the fuck out w/his contract demands
