I know his bad performance for us against Boston years ago still bothers a lot of us but for what we gave up to bring him back, I think it was another real solid move by Cash. He's a very solid #4. I think he'll rebound well his next start. I'm not really worried about this guy..

Javy will look excellent against the Royals, Orioles, A's, Indians, etc... in big games vs. AL rivals he's going to be exposed, i'm trying to warn you!!!

I'm trying not to overreact with him, because he's a talent and I do believe in his game; however, I really hope he's not one of those guys that winces under the glare of the NY spotlight. We know thats a very real syndrome in pro sports so we'll see, 'cause duke can really pitch. Just seems like its all between his ears.

CC loves the spotlight and is a big moment type of talent. His impact on Milwaukee taught me all I needed to know about duke's heart, because he literally put that WHOLE TEAM on his back. He was so brilliant in the second half of that season, he should have won the MVP.

He's just a winner. Plain and simple. Best free agent investment ever by the 'Stripes. He really changed the culture of the team as well as his on field production.

i would like for nothing more than for Javy to prove me wrong... i supported ARod through all of his struggles & all of his criticisms because i'd seen him come up big for us in other games... it was all a mental thing with him, he kept pressing harder & harder because he wanted so much to prove all the naysayers wrong... hopefully Javy V can overcome this the same way, but i just don't get the same sense of passion & competitive fire in Javy as i did with ARod... i see some bitchassness in Javy that will never be able to stand up to the pressure of playing in NY... i watched the guy closely when he was pitching for us the first time... seems like he'd be cruising along just fine the first time through the order & out of the blue the guy almost always throws up a meatball right down the middle of the plate with absolutely nothing on it that gets crushed for a monster HR... sheit was like clockwork.

TMS @ 4/11/2010 10:07 PM
AJ getting me nervous in the 1st but he settled down nicely... good to see ARod's bat starting to heat up so early in the season, & Jorge & Swish showing some power too... Granderson's been a great pickup so far... good job on that by Cash.

If he wins 14 games this year, that is 14 more games than we got from a consistent 4th starter last yer. Come playoffs, we'll see if he's stepped up enough to warrant a rotation spot, otherwise he goes to the pen. It is a a long season and everything could work out just fine with this guy...

Flash that hardware boys!

Welcome back Matsui... wouldn't be surprised if he hit a HR today... dude is always doing something dramatic in games like this.

Finestrg @ 4/13/2010 5:25 PM
Awesome opening day!

-- How the organization, the players and the crowd acknowledged & handled Gene Monahan & Matsui was so cool and so classy it gave me the shivers. The crowd's response to Monahan just shows you that NY fans are the most passionate & knowledgeable out there in any sport. Bar none...What a wonderful pregame man, truly...

-- The ring swapping with Matsui and Swisher was f'in hysterical!!! LOL!

-- Great game. Andy was terrific...I can't believe I ever said he may be coming to an end the beginning of last season..Man was I wrong. The man still has plenty left. Great performance. Great competitor.

-- Nick Johnson has a real pretty swing when he connects. He's gonna thrive in this ballpark..I can't say enough about Brian Cashman. Scott Boras should've never challenged this man to go out and find a more cost-efficient 2 hitter because that's exactly what he did -- AND HE FOUND A DAMN GOOD ONE! Every AB by this guy is professional & first rate. It's all about him staying healthy of course, but Nick Johnson is a tremendous hitter. Period.

-- Granderson was another great pickup. Again, way to go Cash. Yet another guy that's gonna excel in Yankee Stadium (and just tear up righthanded pitching). Very good player. I feel so good with him up there against a righthander, I don't care who the hell it is. And I think he's gonna fair much better against lefties this year as well. He's just too good a player to hit under .200 against lefthanders...

-- This lineup overall is incredible right down to Gardner hitting 9th..Great defensively too.

-- Speaking of defense, is it really necessary to remove Swisher for defensive purposes up 7-1? Just leave him in there Joe -- I don't consider Randy Winn that much of an upgrade in rightfield anyway and it's kinda embarrassing for Nick a little I think. Swish is such a great dude that I don't think it bothers him that much -- at least he'll never show it. For me, he's a regular for us now. I think he needs to be treated as such. Dude made some nice plays during the playoffs last year and again today. Just leave him alone, esp. up 7-1. Come on..

-- Middle relief was a little spotty today but I still have faith in Robertson and Park was a tremendous pickup. I wonder if Robertson will regain that extra few MPH he showed last year when he was at 95-96 before he had to shut it down. It's funny, I'm a big radar gun guy but for some guys it really doesn't matter -- Pettitte was great today throwing 88-90..Carl Pavano beat Boston last night with the same velocity on the heater..But with Robertson, very good hook but his fastball's kinda straight -- 95-96 is a big difference between 92 imho. Hughes I feel the same way. We'll see what happens but the hike in velocity definitely had a lot to do with how effective these two were last year...

-- And speaking of velocity, Mo was 88-90 today. Still has excellent movement and I know it's early but when's the last time you saw that in a regular game other than spring training?? He flat out beat Hunter (I love Torii man, always have, but he just trys to do too much up there at the dish sometimes -- A HR does you nothing there bro, you gotta get on there no matter what and bring Matsui up as the tying run) and then he threw a perfect cutter in on Matsui... Mo got two very good hitters back to back, but I wonder if 88-90 will be enough the whole year if that's what he is now... This is a guy that went from 97-96, to 93 consistently for quite a few years to 90-93, now 88-90 today...I still have great confidence in the man but you honestly gotta wonder how long he can keep going at top performance. Something worth keeping an eye on. I hope they're thinking in the back of their minds about what to do with the closer spot just in case Mo starts getting hit harder than usual (hey, hopefully that day never comes man, but I think that's wishful thinking). I mean these guys are still trying to tell us they picture Joba as a starter eventually so does that mean he'll never be truly considered??? We've been spoiled with Mo for years yet he's been so important to us. We needed ever saved game, every pitch, every cutter...I know, I know...What's this idiot talking about right?? Mo came in and got the save...I just hope they're at least thinking about the future of the closer role just in case the day finally comes where we might have to make change - all I'm sayin'...

Boy, Michael Kay and John Sterling both did a nice exxagerating job today. On my way home from class today, I was listening to them say how Matsui got MAULED! when he got his ring. I saw it on the Encore, and they just walked up to him slowly and kindly and each gave him a hug individually.

Sheesh. Maybe do a better job of being descriptive next time.

Mo hit 93 last game. This was just a warmup for him and he still did his job.

i have yet to watch one minute of the nba playoffs...thank goodness baseball is back.

it is a little scary seeing how good the yankees are right now. not everything is clicking 100% but this could be one of those steamroll seasons...like 110 win type seasons.

djsunyc @ 4/19/2010 9:06 AM
oh and team "run prevention" in boston is a joke. their pitching is good but their defense and lack of hitting threats are going to do them in. victor martinez at catcher is a huge detriment. teams will be running on them all day. tampa is dangerous if their young pitchers can rebound after all those innings from 2 years ago. and crawford + pena are in their last years as a devil ray so they could put up some big time #'s entering free agency.

I dont know if I can get this excited over the Saux stumbling out of the gate. Their starting rotation, front-to-back, is stronger than ours and if they recorrect, and get hot, they'll be a serious problem.

We have the better team, but I dont think its that dramatically better. Season is too long to kick dirt on them after two weeks. Still like 150 games left!

Martinez couldnt throw out Mo Vaughn trying to steal second, but I'm sure Theo is going to grab a defensive-minded catcher to counteract speedy teams.

jusnice @ 4/20/2010 10:46 AM
It is strange seeing the saux lineup these days. They haven't really replaced Bay, Manny, and Ortiz.

I think the blowsox will sit Ortiz, move Martinez to a full-time DH and start Tek or an acquired catcher behind the plate. They'll make a move to get better and still have some great pitching. They could still make the AL East a three team race. The season is young. Having said that, I love seeing them suck.

djsunyc @ 4/21/2010 11:20 AM
sox pitching is stacked but when you commit 2 years $15 mil to mike cameron of all people, you are making a statement about your offense. that offense has not been the same after manny and will continue to be very average w/o him. but with that said, they can win alot of games b/c of their pitching but they have to deal with us and tampa in the same division. and tampa is scary if their young arms recovered from all those innings 2 years ago.
jusnice @ 4/21/2010 12:29 PM
Javy represented a bit last night...he will round out.

Phil is DEALING

This is the future ace that we have pictured for the last several years. Wow.

VDesai @ 4/22/2010 12:06 AM
Phil goes 7 before giving up a hit (and it was a hard hit ball right back to the pitcher that he knocked down but couldnt handle).
