Shapiro scares me a bit out of someone who does not want the dems to win, he seems to have next president vibes, but being unapologetically Jewish in the Democrat party brings some challenges right now.

Thanks for sharing.

Could you or Nalod help me understand how Cooper as a Dem was able to convince voters initially? Was it a reach across isle? Full party ticket? Just opportunity? Right ideas. What did it take to get there and then sustain?

I legit don’t know how states like Minny and NC flip and then further march left.

What has been their path?

Wish I had more insight but I don't - I'm a relatively new transplant here. But Trump won NC in 2016 and 2020 and it's pretty reliably red now beyond the Governorship. Sorta like Manchin in WV all those years. I always find that interesting.

All my friends rave about the breweries down in the triangle area? IDK but I'd love to visit

The way I understand it is this - NC has two major cities, Raleigh and Charlotte, that have dense populations and vote democrat. Cooper ran as a centrist but has gone full democrat with his policy. I have a good friend who is a Senator at the State level. I will ask him his thoughts on Cooper the next time I see him.

Thanks so much, I appreciate it.

It is wild to me how many connections to Kelly, Cooper, etc. just sprouted out.

Thanks so much for the feedback.

I live in the triangle, it's awesome here tbh. Great place to raise a family. 2 hours from the coast and 2 hours from the mountains. I've rekindled the love I had for the Tar Heels as a kid when Vince Carter was my favorite player. The college hoops scene is awesome with Duke-UNC-NC State all within 30 mins of me. Going to be fun with Cooper Flagg playing for Duke next year. This area is almost all transplants, the vast majority of people I meet are from NY, many from upstate. Barely any born-and-raised locals in my area of the triangle.

Be careful Martin, once you visit you might become a damn yankee like me - a New Yorker who comes to visit and stays. NC is a really great state. It is very similar to NY State except it stretches East/West instead of North South. We have tons of transplants where I live from Upstate and L.I. My historic little micropolitan town has more bars than restaurants. We even have our own little triangle we jokingly call the beermuda triangle and one of the best local live music scenes around. And unlike NY, everyone is friendly!

I lived in Durham and traveled all about NC many years ago. In many ways the state was “Goldilocks zone” in terms of weather, climate, geographical variance - mountains, beaches, farmland, college towns, people, etc. Four timely not brutal seasons.

What seems to have changed is like everywhere extreme weather. And extreme politics. Always think about going back there though.

Moved from NY to NC in 1985. Love it here for all reasons mentioned.
cities as said are pretty diverse and liberal. Add Greensboro with a large Jewish Population and a history/culture of inclusion of many. Took in many Vietnamese years ago when they migrated. Add Asheville/Watauga county as well. Thus the cities run up the votes blue. business climate here is great.

State has along history of "Dixiecrats". Jesse Helms was a Dem and then changed to GOP in 1970. State has a long history of Democratic Gov's. The rural counties lack diversity and thus vote very red. Its why we have some crazy stuff going on.

Just three GOP governors the last 100 years. Pat McRory was our last. Hew as former Mayor of Charlotte. He was a moderate and did not buy into the insane bathroom law debacle that cost the state a lot of business. Recall the NBA allotter game was removed because of it. He was not backed by the party for not being "right enough". Funny though we vote for Republican senators. the Rural vote comes out for them.

Right now Josh Stein, or current AG is running vs. Rep. lieutenant gov. Mark Robinson who is a black American but part of that bat shit crazy old times red baptist keep women home, minorities down, etc thing. Stein is Jewish and very personable. Im hoping he gets in as he is a good man and Robinson is nuts. Hard line on the abortion issues with little compromise. Quite frankly he is scary. Dude like this will kill attracting new business. Old rural folk don't like change.

She has no chance against Trump. They will switch her out.

Nalod @ 7/26/2024 8:08 AM
6 democrats is not quite "bipartisan support".

Thats it? Thats all you got? Trumps rap sheet of indictments and now convictions on top of civil suits pales in comparison.

Friend of mine went off point on Facebook "Harris wants to raise taxes to 70%!!"
Thats not her. AOC proposed at one time that on income over 10mm.
Did not happen did it? And not everyone that votes for Harris is a fan of AOC. Just like I'd hope anyone that votes trump is not behind Taylor-Greene.
But post partial statements it on face book others start to believe it or not look at the full context of a proposal. Creating your own truths are not always facts. Most of us are smart enough to read up and make our own minds. Posting partial truths are for the lazy.

Trump? Thats your guy, thats your guy. Maybe GOP should ask him to back down and let others run. Not like his mind is clear.
At the end of the day Biden did the right thing.

Im voting for Harris because she is not Trump. Bring me a John McCain moderate or Mitt Romney and I'll consider it.

Went to the Duke diet and fitness center a few times in the early 2000s. So I got to spend a few months in Durham. Once in the summer, and once in the winter. Helped me get back into shape. Lots of people went there every year like a spa. Big Pun went there, I was told a few years prior..Lost a lot of weight, but sadly didnt want to stay longer.

They f'ed up when they decided to move the place crosstown. Wasnt as nearly as nice, away from the old part of Durham, the old Duke campus. They lost most of their regulars, including a few celebrities. It doesnt really exist anymore. Was considered world class, now its a shell of what it used to be.

I really liked Durham, mix of the old south and the new. Got to watch out for those icy hills in winter though! Had summer tires lol.

Nalod @ 7/26/2024 12:19 PM
Good music scene in Durham with some nice restaurants. Place was a shit hole for a long time when Tobacco money left.
Funny Duke and its medical hospital really kept it going and the investment converting the down town has done really well. High income residents from the reasearch triangle bought it up. Greensboro has always done well with Tobacco and textiles but has now tilted to aerospace and Distribution hubs. Winston has nice research bio tech also to replace RJR, Wachovia and BB&T/Truist that moved to Charlotte. Ashville and wilmington are a bit smaller but do well from tourist biz and attracting a lot of retiree's. Real eastate on both sides are no bargains anymore. Charlotte and Raleigh growth is well documented but traffic from hyper growth has gotten really bad.

Does the Triangle area have a fairly diverse population outside of the school areas?

I am curious about how the Vietnamese community settled in the area and if they brought all the Pho and Banh Mi recipes with them hopefully?

Triangle is Raleigh, Chapel Hill and Durham. "Triad" is High Point, Greensboro, Winston Salem.

the largest population of Montagnards outside of Vietnam, about 5,000, now live in North Carolina. Approximately half of them — and their descendants — call Greensboro home.

I'm also a NC transplant, live on the coast (roughly 2- 2.5 hrs away from the tri) but hoping to move somewhere close to RDU airport in the next couple of years. Nalod pretty much hit on the nose with everything. Really is a great state if you live near the cities. Still a lot of ignorance in random pockets around the state but getting more progressive, imo.

Can't speak regarding the Vietnamese pop but there are plenty of amazing Pho restaurants in the triangle.
